Great interview guys. So glad SOV is deep-diving only into rye & making it theirs. Which is pretty big considering they can't source rye from BC and have to import it from Alberta or wherever. But like Jenna said, something I've been hoping for a while, Canada needs to embrace rye and make it their own, like how Scotland has made barley their own & how America has made corn their own (at least until Mexico decides to get serious about corn).
So on that note, I'm wondering if SOV has considered using *malted rye?* I've heard it being done but it's not very widespread. That's a way to hint at single malt but without doing it via barley.
41:32: When James said that rye is the exact same all across Canada, it reminded me of a criticism I've heard about American corn, that it's all GMO and fairly flavorless across the country. Ralfy himself has stated that American bourbons are beginning to taste homogenous and that's likely why.
I think the fact that a distillery is founded & headed by a former bartender lends it immediate credibility. In this age when I read about so many distilleries being started by former bankers or others from the FIRE sector, I get a bit deflated because I get the feeling they'll sell out to a major conglomerate as soon as they can. So SOV seems to be a very special company.

It seems like the most interesting new distilleries are the ones born from passion not greed :)

I am a bit confused by this. They definately get their Rye from BC. They could not be a Craft Distiller in BC and not use BC grain.

I love you guys! All you guys! Rob & Jeremy for interviewing more local Canadian Distilleries. Good on you guys! And i love Sons of Vancouver, you guys, along with a few other distilleries, are totally leading the way for Canadian craft distilleries. Everyone wants one, and the first independent bottler you work with (hint hint) will be extremely lucky. As Canadians we should absolutely love our local stuff. And you guys are easy to love, you're truly Canadian. Way to go!
Those whisky laws definitely need to be clarified. Canada has a lot of room for innovation, which is great. Just put it on the bottle, don't call it Rye if its not Rye, call it Corn Whisky, or just Canadian whisky. There's no reason to hide a blend of sherry or rum. People will buy whats good. Just label it properly.
How did you guys not recommend the Last Straw Rye? Though i'm sure they had some from Don.
