    I've heard several versions of this particular piece, but nobody plays it like Joel. Every other version I heard doesn't breathe as naturally and beautifully as this one. Joel is a true master.

    I was taken by this piece some forty years ago when I heard Quarrington play it. This sensitive and lovely performance is well supported by the pianist too. Suitable for a cellist too I always thought. Are their really 26 idiots who put thumbs down on this.

    When I heard his Elegy No.1 in CD, I fell in love this tune.
    I bought a lot of CD of this tune, some of them were played by very famous player, but Jole Quarington is the best.

    Dear Joel, you are "THE MASTER", Gary "THE GENIUS", TOM "THE BOTTESINI of the DOUBLE BASS", Catalin "The Paganini of the double bass". It's a Joke, naturally !!! But I think all you I have mentioned have given a NEW DIGNITY to the DoubleBass. Thanks all for your Efforts and "GENIALITY"!!! This your Elegia is so sensible, full of passion, great bow and phrasing. Surely The Best ... !!! An amazing performance under every point of view. Also philological. You crescendo are fantastic. My best and best compliments for you ARTISTRY !!! Vito.

    I find it astonishing that he plays it on a bass tuned in fifths but it was written for a "normal" fourth-bass, it sounds so well balanced (tuning in fifths is superior to fourths in my opinion, I do it as well).

    Bottesini other than being a bass player even if he wasn't is a really good composer usually I find myself not liking many pieces written for bass by bass players but Bottesini is an exeption and a truely great composer if this was written for violin it would likely be much more famous however would not nearly be as good. All in all compositions like Koussevetzky concerto and Dragonetti are in all means ok compositions really just meant to challenge the bass player however this is sublime.

    This is the proof was not the Great Jaco, the first one to put the bass in evidence. Before Jaco, came Bottesini!

    • @slowlearner984
      @slowlearner984 8 лет назад +9

      +Everton de Oliveira Ferreira Bottesini was a master, but that has nothing to do with Jaco. Different instruments, different music, but both world changing virtuosos.

    Bottesini played and wrote music for a 3 strings DB tuned ADG ...

  • @blueviolacat
    @blueviolacat 9 лет назад +1

    Beautiful! Where can I get it in D? Mine is in C.

    • @100theviking
      @100theviking 9 лет назад +3

      It is written in C-major because of what's known as solo tuning. A solo-tuned bass i tuned up 1 whole step, from E A D G, to F# H E A. For solo tuning, you write everything as if the bass still was tuned E A D G, so it's written in C, but sounds D-major.
      Joel Quarrington however tunes his bass in fifths; C G D A, like a cello. It has many advantages.

    • @colinhedges-stoops4142
      @colinhedges-stoops4142 7 лет назад

      A bit late but you could, here he is using solo tuning so everything is a major second higher than written. Bottesini wrote for 3 string basses mostly and in this piece the lowest written note is C which is the lowest note of the cello, so it's possible.

    • @jamesmccoy8568
      @jamesmccoy8568 7 лет назад

      I am going to learn this on the cello. Everything looks like it would transfer over great except maybe the harmonics arpeggios.

    • @lowstringc
      @lowstringc 6 лет назад +1

      Colin Hedges-Stoops actually, he’s in 5ths, so he plays it in D to facilitate the open A and the harmonics. He’s actually tuned just like a cello, and octave down.

    • @paninimelt
      @paninimelt 5 лет назад

      Even later, yeah, you could, but what really makes this piece for me are the 2-3 super rich low Ds that just wouldn't be the same on cello

    • @DavidSmith-kc4hz
      @DavidSmith-kc4hz 5 лет назад

      I gave the music to a fine cellist friend of mine, one Alfia Nakipbekova, twenty years ago but, as far as I know, sho never took up the challenge.
