I use “the people’s poncho”. Almost identical to yours, but it has handles on the underside so when it’s unsnapped you can hold it over the handlebars to create a dome that works great, as long as it’s not crazy windy
As a boy scout I wear cycling clothes (most often wool) that can get wet, sleeted on, snowed on and have a change of clothes in ziplocks in my pannier. When it rains you will get wet. Thanks for the research on the poncho.
I have been searching the internet endlessly for a solution to this same problem, and your video has all the answers! As a fellow fixed gear hipster living in a rainy city, this is perfect (and looks way cooler than the plastic ponchos)
Great video! I'm going to sound like some grouchy old retro-fart, but here goes: A long time ago, here in the UK, we used cycling capes. They're similar to your poncho, but made from inexpensive yellow or orange ( for visibility ) plastic. They have thumb-loops at the front, so the cape encloses the bars and stem, keeping you dry without too much of an aero penalty. In Scotland, where I grew up, it rains like fuck! Imagine a whole country with weather like Portland. With a cycling cape, we would ride all day without sweat. The front of the cape forms a little pool of water, which was entertaining. Ride up next to your friend and splash him with the contents of the pool. A few years ago, I rode Eroica Britannia on a Flying Scot track bike with mudguards. ( fenders are guitars here.... ) I managed to source a proper 1970s cycling cape. It rained all freakin' week but on the day of the ride, it was dry. I was unable to re-enact those wet summers caused by Mt St Helens dust cloud. Anyway, some suggestions: If the poncho doesn't already have loops, maybe get some sewn in. Avoid black ponchos because black bike clothing is an invitation to be an organ donor. If the poncho comes with a hood, cut it off.
Old Marino wool sweaters against the skin are great at keeping you comfortable and relatively dry, while a floppy fluorescent outer shell with lots of zippers gives you flexibility as the weather fluctuates. Clip on fenders really really help on the back wheel. I also add lights and a white helmet especially in heavy rain. Getting soaked, exhausted and cleaning up later is half the fun.
WOW! I'm so happy you made a video on this. I just got a Patagonia Rain jacket and have been envious of Clever hood rain "Cape"/poncho. I think I might make the switch as I'm moving to Northern California soon and am expecting a lot of rain. You should check out some bike specific ponchos with some thumb loops to cover your hand I think Clever hoods Rain cape would fit your vibe too.
I already found these bike ponchos by searching but you just saved me a lot of money and trouble by pointing out the flaws of the rain jackets when it comes to cycling! Thanks!
100% on synthetic rain shells. I hate them for exactly the reasons you lay out. I’ve always wanted to try (the Carradice) waxed poncho, but haven’t ponied up yet. Glad to hear your experiences with a similar item. One thing I’ve had a lot of success with is vintage virgin wool flannels, actually. For anything but a true downpour I can do a
Gore-tex isn't actually waterproof AND breathable at the same time, it's just one or the other: water blocks the pores in the fabric that allow air through when its dry. Fortnine(a motorcycle RUclips channel, so not too far off from cycling) made a video about Gore-tex's marketing bullshit.
I use the Fairweather Poncho that can be packed into a small bag. Great kit for bike commuting. You can put the front bit over the bars so your legs are also covered from the rain. Very lightweight as well.
I'm here to investigate how people find Fairweather's option. I'm nearly sold. I ride slow in heavy rain anyway so if it's a bit of an aerodynamic disadvantage, I'm ok with that. I also can't fit my puffy down layers, or even a regular hoodie beneath an expensive Gore or eVent jacket. Problem is my arms are my heat sink, so they wet out almost immediately no matter how good the DWR coating is.
I don't know if they sell them in the US, I guess they do, but in Europe lots of people ride with a cycling rain poncho that is similar to this poncho you're riding. The main difference is there is part of the fabric that connects the arms, giving protection for your legs from the rain. I used to have a cheap plastic one that I use a lot.
Do proper, 1.) thin baselayer (synthetic) 2.) a fleece and thin softshell (or combination like some of those "polar fleece+softshell") -> that depending on thickness already does the trick for mild rain (just short showers) and snow anyways (no need for anything against snow usually) 3.) Real rainy means the only not too sweaty solution is poncholike stuff or simply getting wet, but stay warm 😂 If you properly softshell, even damp clothes shouldnt make you cold. Depending on how much rain, I always have a thin rain jacket with ventilation (if possible) and a light rain pants (not too much problems with those...sometimes I ride just shorts in the rain)
That horse poncho is very cool. I use a wool jumper, real wool, from sheeps. Waterproof, breathable and stylish. Or if i want pockets, a Harris Tweed jacket, the OG outdoor breathable sportswear. Enjoy you bike, even in the rain.
I wear the big old cleverhood poncho. it has loops that I can attached to my handle bars or thumbs so the front of the poncho hangs over the bars. It breaths even better that way. Only down side it that it forms a puddle of water between me and the handlebars that I have to push off every now and then.
I like them for wet winter riding because I can wear way less layers, and put the rain coat on to block wind and trap my body heat, and it’s more comfortable because I’m not wearing so many layers and I can just move around better- so I use the rain jackets poor breathing ability to my advantage, lol..that poncho just looks way too big and flappy for my tastes…
Well, at least if you sweat to death in cold weather, you won't catch a cold, as opposed to riding in the rain that combined with the wind chill can make you sick.
Something interesting to consider is that materials like gore tex often can only be breathable *or* waterproof, not both at the same time: when it's actively resisting rain and water from outside the pressure differential needed for it to actually let sweat breathe out no longer exists so it stops being breathable. There's a very good F9 video about that.
I have a synthetic poncho i got from a sports store's closing sale a while ago. It works pretty well, and it's bright orange so even in the reduced visibility of the rain I'm impossible to miss.
I stopped worrying about staying dry and just cared about staying warm in the rain. Inexpensive polypropylene thermals work very well. Polypropylene t shirts with arm and leg warmers are great above freezing and allow you regulate your warmth. I like wearing nylon shorts over my bike shorts. If it's below freezing a light wind breaker is nice. You want to be a little cold at the beginning of you ride so that when you warm up you aren't too hot. A fleece head band will keep your ears warm. If it's above freezing decent shoe covers will keep your toes warm. Below freezing i like rubber toe boots with bmx flat pedals and straps.
Do not wear cotton. It will kill you. Either polypropylene or fleece. If you want natural fibers wear silk and wool and you will have the benefits but it will cost more.
If it's hot, who cares about or wants a rain jacket, just get wet. Dress in your regular cycling gear. I only use a rain jacket when it's rainy and cold, because I would rather be warm and wet than cold and wet..
In the winter ill wear a waterproof jacket if it rains because I would rather be warm and pretty wet from the sweat underneath, than cold and soaked from the rain, just one flavour of miserable rather than 2. If its warm and raining then its just shorts and a tshirt with a dry change of clothes in my bag
The point of a rainjacket is to keep you warm. (well IMO). That's why I use a simple windbreaker.. makes most of the rain bounce off. Ideally I would even replace the back with mesh for ventilation since all the rain comes from the front anyways.
Totally agree about the sweatiness of 'breathable' jackets! Plastic ponchos don't work for me either. How did your water-spraying assistant resist spraying you in the face - or was that edited out?
I prefer being wet from rain rather than my sweaty, stanky self. I just have dry clothes at each end of my ride--and figure that I'll just be wet until I get home.
Zach, I have the same problem and I live in Washington. My solution? Extra shirt and a towel for when I arrive. I will say I'm in school for forestry and use a waxed canvas jacket. Its the best
lol! While they keep the rain out, I end up being soaked inside from all the sweat also! Yuk! Going to watch the rest of the video to see if you found a solution.
Cycling is an intense activity indeed. I wear minimal clothing even in the winter. You know you did it right when it's chilly when you are not cycling. Wind proof is quite important tho.
I just recently got myself a proper rainponcho. The only issue: It is freaking huge. My bike doesn't need to be protected from, any sort of weather really because I take care of it and dry and oil it afterwards. So I have yet to find a poncho that is reasonably human sized, not human + bicycle sized.
Shorter warmer rides, just get wet with a windbreaker. Longer colder potential hypothermia situations, rain gear. Wool clothing, all good. Love riding in rain.
I feel your pain. I'm a 6'6 so totally not aero bike rider from Ireland where it's kinda known for being both wet and windy and I also sweat a lot in weather that's not actually cold on my all purpose commuting, shopping and everything else hybrid workhorse. I ended up getting an extra large heavy plastic moped bike poncho from AliExpress. Which extends over the handlebars and down my back with a great big open air area underneath. Perfect! Although admittedly ugly as sh1t. Until I was riding into a headwind and it was a tough ride 💦💦💦 But problem solved!!!! I have just bought my first e-bike and headwinds don't matter much anymore. Pull on the poncho and just nudge up the assist level a little bit and off I go into any damned headwind or gale. I had given up on the poncho using my normal bike unless it was actually pouring down but now it's permanently packed on my e-bike for whenever it's needed. It's great because it completely covers the e-bikes electronics, battery area and mid drive motor too so an extra win win! 😁 So there's the solution. All you need is an e-bike to go with your poncho. Problem solved!
The only rain jacket I have is a really cheap jacket I got from Old Navy about 20 years ago. That thing doesn't breathe AT ALL. I'm sweaty after 5 minutes just standing around.
I live in the rainy Pacific north west, and my god, it rains 10-12 months a year. My solution? Leather boots, with sno-seal. Woolen leg wraps called wennigas. A wool set of clothing!!!! It dries fast. A woolen poncho, turned into a woobie. And a rain poncho made for mopeds, imported from Taiwan!

Good ol military pancho is the best answer. You might have to trim the bottom, but it's actually both waterproof and breathable.
