Just the kind of advice I need. I've just joined my local miniaturists club and after a couple of meetings, have quickly realized that I need to put together a kit. Great advice here.
I know many artists who have had a lot of success with creating classes for Skillshare. I am willing to bet that you could create a very informative class on miniatures! I am not sure how many they might already have but they could certainly use a knowledgeable instructor like you! I have heard that Skillshare compensates their teacher’s much better than RUclips’s payment scheme. Lovely video and very informative and appreciated too!
Thank you so much! I've been doing miniature for the last 4 years... I'm venturing out of 1:12 and trying my hand at half scale.... thank you for the links to help keep the look clean.
Cut off a little piece of foam board and stick the blade of your craft knife in between the layers of paper it to keep it safe and sharp. Also if you have a round craft knife get the triangular pieces you put on a pencil to hold it correctly, slide it on your craft knife handle, and no more rolling off your work surface. You can even cut the triangle into 2 or 3 pieces if you have more than one knife.
I live in Costa Rica, where there is no possibility to find miniature classes. There are many sort of ART and other hobbys classes but no miniatures classes. I started by my self, figuring out how to do things. In fact, when I started to make my dollhouse I didn't know it was a common hobby in the rest of the World. I thought I was a weird persson for having this project being a grown up woman! Funny, ah???
I felt that same way for a while too! I didn't realize how big the mini world was for a couple years while I worked by myself! I am so glad we can now all create together online!💖
Thank you Rachael and I am so glad it was helpful! Thankfully a lot of the items can be found around the house hold or collected slowly as you need them :)
Very informative! I've been wanting a lighted mirror and the extra hands. That is going on my wishlist. Happy New Year. I have enjoyed watching your channel very much!
I believe they call those clamps from your Dad- hemostats. Use them in surgery, dentist office. ETC. Medical supplies has them. Also I have not seen much about COPPA lately. Has these issues been resolved??? Hope so. Hated the thought of loosing folks like you and other great artists! Hope your holiday has been great and looking forward to 2020.
Thank you Lois! The COPPA thing has been clarified a bit more... which is great for channels like mine because I feel like I am more in the clear. However there are still channels (like doll re-painters) that are still feeling unclear. The FTC seems like they are willing to update the law but it could take years for them to do that. We also learned that we will at least get a warning email or notice before we are given a fine. That is way better than what we previously believed... that way we can learn with the FTC/youtube is looking for. Thanks for asking! If there are any more updates I will add it to the end of one of my videos ;)
Darn the TSA and not being able to take a toolkit like this as carry on. If be worried I went on holiday over Christmas, and I took some micro crochet stuff to do while I was away and rather than scissors, I was able to take nail clippers! If you're flying it's handy to know what you can and can't carry on.
This is the best overview for a travel tool kit I have seen. Been doing mini's for 20 years and have my own kit of basically what you have in yours, but have always struggled when I am trying to explain to a newbie what they might need. Thank you.
My friend, If I may be so bold to address you as such, I wish you and your family, the best of the season, and I wish you continued success in growing and developing you RUclips channel. I look forward to another year of amazing, instructive and amusing videos. Thank you for sharing your fascinating talents.
Happy New Year to you and all your followers. I guess I’ll go through my kit the next few days and make sure it’s well stocked. Thanks for the video. ❤️
I didn’t know classes were a thing. Don’t think any are in my area due to how isolated I am. I just started, have been saving good cardboard for a while with the intention of starting. Interesting to see what tools you have for miniatures .
Isn’t Harbor Freight fabulous?! My husband introduced me to one about 3 miles from our house and every time I go, it feels like I’m a kid in a candy store! I have a similar magnifying glass & clamp item, mine isn’t lit. I also have the set of tiny files (I’ve broken the tips off half of them!) and although I’m newer to minis, I’ve been using most of these tools for years. My husband makes a whole array of different things than me, but we use a lot of the same tools & supplies. I also like checking the hardware section of my dollar stores for items like gel super glue and caulk. Occasionally they have small tubes of 2 part epoxy!
Also I recently noticed Dollar General has been carrying some arts and craft supplies recently, like an off-brand tacky glue, craft paint- I like using blackboard craft paint for a REALLY flat black!
Yay! In my pajamas! ❤️❤️❤️ Thanks sooo much for sharing what’s in your magic case that let’s you create such fun & beautiful creations. 😁😁😁 Really appreciate your kind sharing, it’s like all your viewers are treated like good friends. ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you and all happiness for the New Year! ❤️🐿🐿🐿 PS- Ha ha! “ flat head “ pliers. I don’t know what all the names are either! 😁
Bentley House Minis I don’t even live in the States so I would have to fly to a miniature show if I wanted to attend one. I am sure that they hold them here in Canada but I don’t know where. I would have to search out for them but for now I am happy with what Ara teaches us. Thanks for sharing your tool kit with us, Ara, I appreciate all your help and wonderful advice for us newbies.🥰❤️🥰
Much useful info here :) Thank You! 💜 I´m just starting out with minis, gonna try and vamp up my old dollhouse :) I thought it would be easier to start of with a house that was already done and just make it into what I want it to :) 💜
❤️Thanks for the information, Ara. But I think this is much more advanced than I am at this point in time. Nice to know though. I like that you thought of everything. Happy New Year!!! 😄
So glad you enjoyed the video Darnelle! Please know that I collected these over years of working in this hobby so don't think you have to have all of this ;) Typically if you do find a mini class you want to take they will let you know what you need and you can focus on those things specifically. Have a wonderful New Year!!🎉
Greetings Ara and All! I am new to channel. My Grandfather built me a dollhouse many years ago. I am blowing off the dust to begin a new hobby. Ran across your channel and very inspired Ara. THANK YOU and Happy New Year! Ps...In a previous video, you used old cereal boxes for roof shingles...BRILLIANT!!!! ❤
Welcome to the channel Kim!! What a lovely project to work on. If you ever feel like sharing we do Worktable Wednesday over on my FB page every week! Its a fun way to share and get ideas. Happy New Year!
I would love to attend a miniatures class in person but found none in my area. Fortunately we have you guys! Thank you so much for sharing and just being there. Another good miniaturist tool....I purchased 4x and 6x reading glasses from Readers.com for about 15.00 each. It's amazing when you pop these glasses on after painting and found out how many spots you missed! They are very very useful for detail work.
Great tips about the glasses! I am so glad we have this space on YT to create and craft miniatures all together! I learn as much or more from you guys in the comments as you learn from me lol!
You have a well stocked tool kit there Ara. I'd love to have one myself but miniature making isn't as popular in Australia and there are no classes near me. That's why your channel means so much to me, it's the next best thing to going to a class
Not sure where in Australia you are, but they have classes at Fairymeadow Miniatures in Wollongong. I'm in Newcastle but go down to their classes sometimes
I am so glad we have this internet space here so we can create and mini together! If I hear anymore about mini classes in Australia I will try to let you know! I realize its a big country!! ;)
Love the tool case supplies! I wish I could go to a class, but the Cities are an hour away. (BTW, that's a flat nose pliers ... chain nose pliers (like needle nose without teeth) are handy too! (Jewelry artist here) 😊) Thanks for this video, and have a happy New Year! ❤
Thank you for the help with the names Pamela! I know there are a ton of jewelry supplies that are really helpful with minis and I have only scratched the surface. I am glad we can have our own learning space here on YT! Happy New Year!
Loved it! Thank you so much for sharing! I have been curious what an established miniaturist caries with them on a regular basis. This will definitely help me figure out what I need in my tool kit. Been searching for a detailed list for a while now. Thank you and I hope you have had a wonderful Christmas with your family and have a great new year. I finally got me a mitre block set and some mini room kits for my Christmas. :-) have a great day.
I am so glad it was helpful for you Julia! I hope you had a wonderful holiday! And a fantastic New year! I will be excited to hear what you make with your new mini tools ;)
Hi Ara! I've recently discovered how much I adore minis, spooky houses in particular, and it's quickly turning into an obsession. Your channels have been an amazing resource for inspiration and to learn. I was wondering if you have any recommendations for other channels and/or resources for someone just starting out. Thanks!
Yes I will try to do that early this year when I need a quick video idea. I know it can be confusing at times and would be great to have a reference video. Great idea!
Wait. There are CLASSES? 😂 who knew? I’m very new to miniature stuff, but am stocking up like crazy. One thing I got was a modelers/ miniatures kit from Amazon. I really like it , but along with my other tools, the bag they include is too small. I’m curious about what you use the water sprayer for. So much to learn, but I’m on fire. Hope you have a happy New Year!
I didn't realize that such pre-made kits existed... how interesting! The best place to look for miniature classes are when there is a miniatures show (convention) or shop around ;) Depending on where you are I can let you know if I know if one in your area. The water sprayer I usually just use to store water since its water-tight but it has also been helpful to wipe down work spaces if need be ;) Happy New Year!
No I only have this portable one that I grab from my kit when I need it. But I do know that they have magnifiers that can clamp on the edge of your desk... not sure of any brands to recommend though since I haven't tried any personally. If you find one you like let me know!
I don't know of any online classes right now but I know a couple creators that do classes on Patreon. If you are interested in that I can send you their info.

How handy. Exactly what I need. Thank you for your time. Love your site.
Fantastic video, I just happen to have watched it now in late 2022, so when you said you look forward to seeing what 2020 held I fell apart laughing😮
Came here to say the same 😅
my exacto knife lid stopped fitting a long time ago, I use a wine cork at the end :)

I like how clean and organized it is
It isn't always that way when I'm in the middle of creating :) lol!

How awesome! Happy creating Jan! And I think the best minis are made while we're in our PJ's ;) lol!
I use wooden clothespins as clamps. They're cheap and work great!
I haven’t ever heard of a miniature class being held in my area. I will have to be on the lookout for one because l would definitely sign up for it.
Chris Frear me too. However, I live far from any towns, and work nights, so I rely on RUclips channels like this.
