  • I worked on the Captains Windows this week and they gave me a run for my money (seriously resin can be expensive lol!) While I do end up showing you how I created the windows in the end, I also show the struggles I went through to get there. Also I seriously struggled with my audio in this video so I hope its not too annoying!

Ara!!! This is so valuable for the whole community...as always, thank you for your generosity in sharing the entire process with us. My favorite take-aways?
#1 The Polycrylic Sharpie Tinting Process - I love this so much. Genius!
#2 The 'Cure from a Distance' method of reducing the warping caused by the exothermic reaction in the UV resin. Totally useful for all of us who love working with this stuff, but have struggled with the WARP!
The final set of windows is incredible - any Captain worth his salt would be proud to gaze at the artistry surrounding him as he voyages through time and over the bounding seas. Yep. 😍😘

Thank you my friend!! I was soooo happy to discover the distance trick (which some may already know) but I was holding it far away just as a fear reaction because I didn't want to it to warp again.... And it didn't lol. My fear worked out in the end I guess. Thank you for your kind words!💖

I have a super simple way of making "stained glass windows" for the castles I make and they look wonderful for anyone who might be interested.
I use Shrinky Dink clear plastic sheets. I also use "Sakura Glaze pens". These have a thicker ink that has a bit of a 3D or raised effect. These pens also Upcome in bright colors and have a see through, glaze effect so they are absolutely perfect for making the colored 'glass"
The black pen is also great for making the lead lines as it is thick and will hold each color separate.

They turned out really good. I didn't have most of the things you used in this video so for mine I just used clear plastic. I stippled the Sharpie on both sides to avoid obvious lines. I then stippled clear contact adhesive on both sides to make it look rippled and finished both sides with clear polyurethane varnish. Only problem was the drying time. Keep up the good work :)

I love seeing the whole process. Yes, making mini's can be painstaking and frustrating, until you finally get the right combination of products. I love that you used what you had instead of going out and buying a bunch of gallery glass, and plexiglas, or what have you. As miniaturists' we need to look hard at what we already have, because if you have a good stock of normal everyday stuff, including what most think of as trash, you generally have what you need. And when it finally comes together and you know you did this yourself (usually with a few tips from others) nothing can compare to that feeling! For me, in most cases, it's far too easy to go buy something. In some cases I do use pre-made items, but if I can make it myself? That is a level of satisfaction money cannot buy! The windows turned out wonderfully! Great job!

How fun. I love your attention to detail, and the struggle is real! Trying to get what is in your head to match what you actually produce can be so frustrating. Kudos to you for not giving up! Just a tip for future stained glass projects. Yellow and blue make green. Seems like the blue is your best performer. Put down a base of yellow, THEN mix yellow and blue to get your desired green. The base of yellow will intensify your green tones. I do this all the time when creating with markers, no matter what type. Also, use a tissue to wipe out your paint wells in your palette, while the poly is still wet, then you can use that well again sooner. I love the way they turned out, particularly the ship. Some of these techniques would work well with many genres of arts and crafts.

I used my 3D printer to make leaded glass inserts and when I added the resin it bowed but sitting a heavy book over it while it cooled down flattened it right out. It may not have been the best way, but I am very new to miniatures and it seemed to work. You can also use gallery glass paint. You do not have to heat it up and it is made to look like stained glass. I love your videos, you are the one who inspired me to start working on a dollhouse kit I have had sitting around for years. Haha.. you mentioned Gallery Glass (leading) at the very end. :-)

I am surprised none of the artists you linked used glass colour. That would be my way to go. But maybe that is too expensive if you just use it once.
In Germany we actually have one other thing that I havent found international equivalents too... it is also called window color, it is kinda like the liquid lead you had, and then dries translucent. It is kind of a gum like plasticcy texture when dry. And looks awesome :)

Sort of late to the party here, but I happened upon another RUclipsr from Japan (I think) that works will resin and her work reminded me of the stained glass appearance you were trying to achieve. Honestly, her projects are shockingly good in her execution so I thought some of her techniques might also be applicable to the artwork you do. As an artist myself, 80% of the success can be dependent solely on materials used and so much variety of materials is available that no one can know about all of them. LOL.
The RUclipsr is Nelco Neco. ps...she mixes the colorant with the resin first and then applies it.
Thanks for your helpful and amazing videos! So interesting and informative.

I have done a similar exercise using wood / laser. Here are things I found that might help in future attempts: 1) I used powdered colors in the resin. This allowed me to get consistent color mixes. It did mean that I had to individually fill "cells". 2) I got a large bore blunt needle syringe, and am able to quickly and precisely fill. 3) The UV reaction is EXOTHERMIC (generates heat) there are tapes that you can purchase that are heat resistant, and have glue that can be removed from wood. 4) wood has air in it, and will make too many bubbles at the edge. if you "Paint" the wood with clear UV resin prior to your first fill, this can greatly reduce the bubble issues.

Wow! A lot of trial and error but I LOVE the way they ended up looking! The bubbling and that extra thickness that comes from the resin is truly perfect. It's so funny that you decided to do the window give away because I was thinking how great it would be if you sold those darker ones in the shop since you had gone through the trouble to make them, LOL! You have added soooo many Patrons and viewers that I knew there were lots of folks who would love to have them! I could not wait till tomorrow and I'am glad I see the video now. I did my glaswindow (many years ago) with real glaspaint. I used the package plastic, the same as you used for your windows.I used blck acryl paint for the lead. Hi Ara, thanks for sharing your process and your problem solving of this tricky part of the Captain's Quarters.
I've seen plenty stained glass in UK cathedrals etc, and I think your end result is very realistic. They used different colours of glass and then painted over them. Some parts fade more quickly, and some of the glass has imperfections in them. They can also warp slightly, so that is realistic too.
I think the stained glass immediately sets the scene of it being in a ship even if you didn't label it.
As to whether or not wooden ships from the 17th and 18th Century would have stained glass windows, I'd suggest that they wouldn't. I think they'd be too fragile to cope with waves crashing off of them. I think porthole glass tends to be quite thick to give it durability.
But hey! He's a time travelling Captain. I imagine he'd have access to technology that would stabilise his windows so he could have this amazing cabin.

  • @ImperialKneazle

Wow, Arya you just keep getting better and better! The windows are so beautiful, even the ones you rejected kinda worked anyway as very old glass wouldn't have been flat, but bubbly, thick and warped. i do love the darker ones, but the ones you used in the end act as fab accent points and highlight the wood effect on the walls. I know it's not real wood, and certainly not real glass, but they now look as if they are. Re your sharpie colourants - very sneaky idea - worked well - but maybe next time resin inks might be quicker? Can't wait to see what you make next, you're post are the highlight of my weekends :-)

Thank you for your kind words! I am pretty happy with how they are working in the space too :) I thought about ink but i don't have many colors and I know they can be expensive to purchase so I improvised lol ;)

Love the final version! Most stained glass is a lighter color for the translucency. The really deep shades are smaller pieces and are usually found in big projects like cathedrals.

These are amazing, your awesomeness knows no bounds! I did watch another person do miniature stained glass windows and they used glass paint, they also used UV resin but they applied it to the opposite side of the picture and they did not cure it, they dabbed the resin on to give it the "cloudy" appearance that stained glass has. I've also seen somebody use the Sakura gel pens "glazed" for the picture side. obviously none of these things are going to help you at the moment but maybe in the future if you decide to do it again and want to try a new approach. what I love most about youtube is that I can take pieces and parts of ideas from everybody and still be able to do my own thing. 😁 Thanks again for sharing your beautiful mind!

The darker stained window reminded me of harry potter forth movie he takes the golden egg for the second task into the prefects bathroom, and the mermaid stained window...having just rewatched the movie. The darker window would match really well probably on a stone themed architecture like the castle as opposed to a wood themed room you know. They are beautiful. You having amazing skills!

I experimented with faux stained glass a few summers ago. I finally came up the the perfect recipe. I sand the acetate and use metallic black fabric paint for the leading. You can trace an image or I pipe the straight line and then stretch and lay them on the lines after brushing the area with mod podge. For the glass. I mixed food coloring into thinned liquid hem glue. I have also mixed thinned acrylic paint or streaked or dotted directly onto the glue after filling the space. I attached another piece of acetate to the back and did the leading again. This protects my “glass” and creates the illusion of leaded glass. It did pretty well in the sun and didn’t melt under rain.
