What a wonderful lady! She has an amazing and entertaining way of explaining the technical issues for those of us who do want a lecture. She uses ‘tic, tac, toe’ for rule of thirds and the clock face or perspective. I’m taking these ideas to my art class where I know that perspective is a real not understood issue. Thank you.
Thank you so much Michael. I’m really so glad that you not only understood but could relate to my analogies. I try not to get too technical (perspective) since it’s just not how my brain works. I happy to learn that I’m not the only one 😊
What an enjoyable and very instructive video. I’ve learned so much in this session only. Thank you so much for your generosity and kindness, It is truly appreciated.
Thanks for practical advice that you give . I’ve been painting on and off for years, also working crazy hours and a divorced mom , for YEARS. You have helped save me so much time in my retirement, with your knowledge!
Thanks so much Sandra. No matter what life throws our way we can calm our minds when making art. It’s like time stands still when we are in the creative process. Best therapy going in my opinion.
Oh, Shelley, you're such a lovely person, don't listen to us, but, perspective is a big thing! You can paint any colour hair or any building, just give us you with all of what may be going through your mind when drawing and painting. You are an inspiration, bless ya.
Sadly, I cant always watch but whenever I do I learn very valuable lessons. This was no exception. Thank you Shelley. I've wondered how artists create the look of shallow water where you can see rocks clearly beneath the surface - can't remember where I saw it - maybe I imagined it
Thanks for all your amazing videos. One thing I’ve often thought with many RUclips videos is that, for the camera pointing at a static reference subject, it would be better to turn off the auto-focus and simply manually focus it before starting, since the paper distance never doesn’t change. It doesn’t matter usually if your hand or whatever us out of focus so long as the paper remains in focus. Just a thought…
Haha Shelly, I used to try an do approximate angle of degrees until this morning when I thought about clock hour angles and gave them a try and Lo and behold I watched this video tonight and Bingo! When you were drawing the coffee cup I was hoping you would show a demonstration for a coffee/tea cup handle. Mine turn out all wonky or twisty, maybe next time
ShellY, thank you for your very treasured and UNDERSTANDABLE video. The only thing I'm not clear on is transferring a picture onto paper when it's a different shape. Could you expand?
Basically I’m saying the the reference and painting area need to be the same proportion. If you drew everything from a rectangular reference onto a square piece of paper, everything would look squished (or stretched if going from square to rectangle)
Thank you Shelly, I needed this video, helped me heaps, I have always had a hard time with drawing perspective, it becomes very confusing for me, especially books on a table, and the space between the books and table edge, in other words, I have trouble drawing the depths between objects..
Hi Nancy - usually I will use grey graphite paper and use the fine point of a stylus tool to make sure the lines aren't thick or dark. I peek after the first line to 2 to make sure I'm using the correct pressure (not too light or dark).
Use of Copyrighted materials Used to be OK for educational purposes - which is what you are doing. Now - Copyrights are a Mess! Congress needs to loosen the laws up. New Artists are extremely comfused trying to comply with the laws. This will give our legislators something Constructive to do besides taking care of "Woke" crap!
Thanks! Your demonstrations are all very helpful and it is generous of you to Put these detailed lessons up. AWESOME!

Thankyou for helping me with drawing a river ! I need to widen the part closest to me !
It is normal. When drawing it, it just ‘feels’ too wide even though it looks correct. Just our brains messing with us again!
Thank you for breaking down the elements of drawing in this way! Very helpful! 💕 Cami
I'm so happy that it was helpful to you. Thanks for watching! :)

You did a video on perspective which I loved, but I can’t find it anymore.

Thank you!!!
Extremely useful, thank you.
I'm glad that it was helpful. Thanks Norman
Shelley, ... how do you transfer your completed drawing onto watercolor paper?

On the bright side, at least it encourages artists to work from their own references.
😄👍🏻
