      The rational was based on the fact that both aircraft met and exceeded the requirements and Lockheed Martin had the better project management as stated by the former USAF chief engineer.

      Northrop were behind schedule and overbudget on the B-2 program. Plus the USAF wanted ATF to be extremely agile (at the time everyone jumped on the TVC bandwagon, Northrop did not)

      @Ripa-Moramee Год назад +1

      @@oneway1512 Avionics and additional radar absorbing material definitely would have been one of them. But apart from that, not likely much. It would have ended up the same way the f-22 is now, although the F-22 did quite drastically improve from its prototype to what it is today. Even the difference between the prototype and the first production f-22's is noticeably different.

    • @Accuaro
      @Accuaro Год назад +8

      @@Ripa-Moramee Hard disagree, YF-23 looks way better aesthetically. They even had plans on updating the frame to be even better. The pilot who flew both said they both manoeuvre the same without needing thrust vectoring. YF-23 tail fins were the same size as the F-22 wings. It was purely political that it lost. With the transition to BVR the whole thing about needing to point your plane in the direction of the enemy to fire was pointless, even more so after the cold war ended. YF-23 would have been the superior plane then and now as it is more stealthy.

    • @Ripa-Moramee
      @Ripa-Moramee Год назад

      @@Accuaro You can disagree all you want, it doesn't change the facts. Firstly, how does a oddly shaped dorito winged hotdog with a extended cockpit not apart of the main fuselage look even slightly as good as the F-22 we see now? It doesn't, and the fact you are incapable of acknowledging this shows your ignorance on the subject. If that wasn't evident enough already, your claim that they maneuvered the same certainly is as it is literally the primary reason it was selected over the YF-23, as the ATF was outlining a stealthy dog fighter to combat the maneuverable SU-27 and MIG equivalent that had been spotted by spy's, which worried the US military. So, as such they invented something better than what the USSR claimed they had, which, obviously was nowhere near as good as what they claimed so the US military as always, completely over compensated with the ATF program. If you actually had thorough research, you would know this. ruclips.net/video/_MUK241uZHM/видео.html

    The y stands for prototype, so if what we know as the YF-23 was chosen then what we know as the F-22 would only be called the YF-22 and the YF-23 would commonly be called the F-23.
