- Join us as we examine how Off Road Capable Jeep Grand Cherokees and Jeep Cherokees are. We head out with 4 other Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK2) Owners and 1 Cherokee Trailhawk owner to see how capable they are Off Road.
In this video we test the Jeep Grand Cherokees in many different types of Off Road conditions to see how they perform.

The Grand Cherokee Trailhawk is a VERY capable machine. People in Wranglers and Rubicons laugh when you show up to a trail. After I’m able to go where they can go, but in comfort and luxury, they sing a different tune. The “that’s not a real Jeep” changes to, “Wow I didn’t know they could do that”.
Same reaction I’ve been getting with my GC 2014 limited. I’d eventually like to get a lift or new suspension and tires too ❤
Glad to see a channel dedicated to something other than a wrangler. Love my 06 GC limited with the 5.7. It's completely stock yet it still takes me places most people wouldn't imagine. It does have every factory option that was available in 06.
Just yesterday we went to the beach at Ft. Fisher and several people commented that we would never make it to the beach without getting stuck. We passed 2 wranglers stuck in the sand yet we had no issues.
Good Stuff!
Say the stock tires are biggest issue here, the rigs are more capable than most people think. Great video!
Thanks!
I wouldn't call those stock, they're Goodyear Wrangler Duratracks, some pretty beefy A/T's I'd say, however would be nicer with more sidewall and smaller wheels so he could air down
Just bought a Trailhawk…I had no clue it was THIS capable!? Your videos are gonna get me out there real fast lol
This looks like SO much fun! Especially with everyone there helping the novices out!
These are nice Jeeps and very capable for what they are. We run the old Cherokees on at least 37s and about 10 inches of lift. When we get to the gravel (rock) part of the trail we look for the harder path. Keep those mall crawler going . Have fun and be safe.
Anybody who actually takes their 4WD on real trails deserves respect. Too many pavement princesses out there.
My 2021 GC went mud running on day one. 🤣
@@americansmark Right on man. That's what I like to hear.
Lol man I want another grand Cherokee so bad . I had one but for like a month , ended up in the canal😂
Wow! Great video! I was out with Brad with a group the next day and we had an epic time. All grand cherokee trailhawks with ZERO damage. These vehicles are super capable. Just be smart!
Keep 'em coming Brad. Love watching the wk2 rock and roll.
Thanks!
Made me appreciate the WK2 even more! Your content gets better and better each time, Brad. Thank you!
I’m glad you’re enjoying it!
Another great example of the huge capability of the stock Jeep Grand Cherokee! Thanks Brad.
Absolutely
i had a stock 15 Non Trial hawk and was keeping up with the wranglers with big tires, by the end of the run they were all very impressed with how it performed. also i did all that on all season tires and no all terrain tires.
I’m 48 - I have cervical issues in my neck from 20 years in IT. I’ll take the comfort and the capability of my 2020 TH than a wrangler any day...and when I drive from Tampa to the smokies in one 10 hour day, my body is very thankful to be in a comfortable truck. Our other truck is a 2018 4runner TRD pro and although it’s a bit more capable...it’s not nearly as comfortable.
Hwy miles and Hwy speeds are why I got the Gr. Cher THawk. Too much hwy time. Step in left lane you better be doing 80mph. Renting another Wrangler for a short stay in Co. Another test hop. Will give it another assessment.
Neck issues from 20 years of IT? I bet you also have carpel tunnel 🤣
Looks like a really great day on the trail! I really like watching these videos seeing what the WK2 is capable of, they really don't get the credit they deserve.
That hill climb looked especially fun, would love to try that with my stockish 4Runner.
Thanks for watching!
Mainly a grand Cherokee ZJ and WJ fan but these videos definitely made me appreciate the wk2s more
This is really one of your best videos. It keeps getting better and better. Keep it up.
Thank you!
I really like the music you chose. Especially the first song!
Thanks!
Back in the early twenty-teens I owned and frequently offloaded an FJ Cruiser with a largely FJ/Toyota club. One of the members had gotten a new (circa 2012) WK2 Laredo X when his family had their second child. He brought it out to Uwharrie with us on one trip and we were all very impressed with it. With just sliders and good tires it kept up with the FJs on almost everything, including some obstacles we had to recover more built Wrangers from.
This was a very well put together and enjoyable video!
Excellent video Brad! Haters and doubters will always exist! The WK2 is an awesome rig! Continue to enjoy it
Thanks! We will
Just got my Gr Cher Trailhawk! Cant imagine doing some of this! lol. Amazing stuff👍👍😎🇺🇸
Thanks!
Hey! It's Virak; the video guy that rode with Corey! I had a blast riding the trail with all of you! Although the day was exhausting it was fun! I just came back from vacation and am just now getting to editing all the footage I have from the trip; good times!
Hey there! Glad you had fun! Looking forward to seeing that footage. 👍🏻😊
Really sweet stuff! We are in moab right now and going to do fins and things in my brothers 2015 cherokee trailhawk with mfc lift and 32 inch tires. Pretty much our first off road trip in it and really excited after watching your video!
Have fun. That’s a great trail!
Damn, wish I knew this was going on...I live an hour from Rausch. I have a heavily modified 2012 WK2 with QTI. Yes, no 4Lo. I've gone water fording through like 3ft of water, rock crawling, mudding, etc. I just lock it in 1st and have fun. Would've loved to have joined!
What an Intro. Can't wait to watch the rest.
It’s a good one!
Thank you Brad, Lauren and Kresdge kids for amazing time. We watched this video tonight as trailer to the family movie night and had a blast. My wife and the two older ones confirmed it was the right choice not to go. Looking forward to meeting up with you all in Moab!
So glad you enjoyed it. I hope you are proud of you accomplishments out there. You did a great job! See you in Moab!
@@ProdigalOverland just watched the video again, man, that crawler's ridge performance is so painful to watch, completely void of any elegance ;-)))
I got my GC on Friday and really happy about it. I did my due research as I always do with any purchases. I will be adding quite a few mods and hopefully can join you all when you make it back to Texas. Thank you for your channel and helping me solidify my decision on buying a GC.
Sounds good!
Hey, dude, you bought "the most awarded SUV ever"

Greetings from Costa Rica.
Great video, and you all did Jeep proud!
Thank you!
I just wanna say that first min was dope af footage
Thanks for adding the Cherokee Trailhawk!!! I have one :-)
Excellent video! Greetings from Mexico!
Thanks for watching
Awesome video
German Brute Force. Haha. Hartmut your awesome. Great ride Brad. I’m all itching for an adventure now. Cheers man. 🍺
Thanks man!
I feel like the Cherokee TrailHawk Elite with the 4 wheel low + the rear locker seems to be extremely underrated
Sting gray representing!
Muito bom o vídeo! Parabéns!
Cool to see a Cherokee with you guys. I own one. Unfortunately, your right about the off-road community bashing certain vehicles. I've heard the same comments. Great videos to show them these vehicles hold there own.
We were glad to have a Cherokee out with us!
Great channel
Great video. Good job on the video editing:)
As a Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland owner, I don't think I will see any terrain this extreme, but we do head to some offroad areas when we visit northern Michigan and of course snow during ski season. It's nice to know, based on your demonstrations, my Jeep is more than capable of what we'll encounter.
It sure is!
Some fun trails in Manistee National Forest. Nothing too extreme but we're not hard core off roaders. We go where they trail takes us.
the camber issues can be helped with aftermarket camber kits that elimiinate eccentric bolts... those bolts tend to slip... with the right wrenches, the camber can be fixed on the fly, but the allignment will need correction later on... Great fun....
Gritting my teeth at all the scraping! Ouch! Bring your checkbook when you go rock crawling! Cool video though, very informative.
I LOVE my WK2, with Quadra-drive and the air lift suspension.
I really like your videos because they REALLY show what these particular Jeep’s.
can do.
Love Mine, 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland, loaded.
Thanks for watching!
Man that off camber section was some serious stuff in GC but dang you did it.
Love your videos! Do you think you'll ever do a video on spotting? I'm new and all for learning by doing, but also want all the advice I can get. Thanks for all the great content!
We haven’t done one specifically on spotting yet. But that’s not a bad idea. Thanks
Thats’s a great idea, @jensuth . Brad, I could see that being very popular, I certainly could learn a lot as I have now real idea on how to properly spot!
The Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk is an AMAZING and CAPABLE jeep. Plain and simple.
Yes it is!
Looked like an awesome ride!
It was!
I hear you like the mud!
@@ProdigalOverland yes!!!
I love all the spotting in this vid. 95% of the time the guys I'm out with come through stuff like this like [Mario voice] "here we GO!!!". No stopping no spotting. My GX470 has earned its badges LOL.
I've been on three Jeep Jamborees in my 2017 Trailhawk and every time I've been underestimated. Granted, not many people are going to bring a nice $50k jeep out that might get body damage, but that's exactly what they're doing with their upgraded Rubicons and Wranglers. All I have are rock sliders added on. If you get a TH, make sure that comes with it. Also, I was asked if I had lockers and I said I had QuadraTrac electronic lockers. I was almost laughed at. I called them Locker Snobs. I personally think what I have is better. I love my Trailhawk.
Hate when people laugh at the things you have just cause it's not up to their standards. Makes me not want to join the offroad community.
I can’t wait to come out one day
i have a 2018 summit now, but i had a 2011 overland with the 5.7. i was at the beach. a honda accord parked in the sand and got stuck. i watched a lifted f150, 1500 and ram all try and just spin and sink the in sand. then i tried with my jeep and the and setting and it spun slowly, controlled, all 4 wheels at the exact same speed, with warn street tries and pulled the honda out with almost no problem. it pissed off ALL of the truck owners and we got a roaring applause from the neighboring condo balconies that happened to be watching lol. was a VERY jeep moment, back in '12. i've been doing this in these GCs longer than these people on youtube even knew what these jeeps they were...
I agree that these are very capable especially Trail Hawks. The problem is some people take things for granted and spoil the name. Once I spent 2+ hrs on the trail recovering a grand Cherokee that the owner was on street tires, refused to air down and I get it, and did not have recovery points. It really caused a lot of problem for the group and now people avoid that person to go on trails. If people just improve their understanding of their rigs then these are amazing rigs.
That trail was pretty technical for the newbies. Nice. Good to see all the kids. Always fun to look for Sammy. He is the guy running around in the background with a stick or something that no one ever sees. But we do! Hope all is well. Good video. Cheers! BTW, if anyone is looking for a hidden winch mount, give my email, and we can talk. See ya!
Sounds good! Excited to meet up again with you guys!
Love the content! I live vicariously through these videos. I have a stock 2018 GC Trailhawk and would love to come down and test out the capability. I’m upgrading tires to either the falcon wild peaks or the K02’s - 265/65/18. The K02’s are actually cheaper right now here in 🇨🇦.
Hopefully one day we will get up to Canada.
Im cross-shopping the new Defender and Land Cruiser for the next year, but didn't consider the new GC until today. I used to run a ZJ. Was great, until the front ring and pinion stripped. Just Duratracs and no rear sway bar. Did all the rock around Yellowknife here. I've had lots of 4x4's, and love exploring, road tripping and camping. RTT is currently on the wife's RAV4, but I can't wait to get back into a proper 4x4 again. The RAV4 recently did slmost 6000kms around the Yukon, but there were places I definitely wanted to push further. I hope to be back there next year.
Take care.
Security gets bent out of shape whenever I take my Jeep GC to the mall - especially when I go down the escalators. Hmph. Go figure.✋🙄🤚
🎄🤪👍
I drive a jeep rubicon and I had a grand Cherokee trail hawk that was stock as a rental and took it off road and was amazed how capable it was.
Great vid looks like a fun day , my main reason for commenting though is for the lady that’s doing the filming, commentary and also guiding drivers….super awesome job, you know what you’re talking about you’d definitely be a pleasure to have out on the trails
Thanks for that, I let her know!
This made me lol, I took my Cherokee TH on the Rubicon Trail, also had an Expedition One bumper and Winch setup. They aren't just mall crawlers, they off road well and are comfortable. Unfortunately I was ran off the road into a concrete barrier, but mad respect for these Unibodies.
I think they do well out there!
The one weakness IMO with the WK2 Trailhawk is the laughably crappy belly pan; if they put a real skid plate there it would add so much extra protection
, but yeah a JGC T.H. with good tires and a competent driver is better than most wrangler trims since half don't have sort of locking differential
Nice nice
Jeep 4 EVER
💪💪💪💪
Qd2 is so amazing there at the end
All the bottle jacks I have had you could twist the top to give it more reach.....or cut down the amount you had to jack it by closing the gap faster by unscrewing it.
Look at the ARB Hydraulic Off-Road Jack! I have one and am on 37's and it works great. It'd be perfect for situations like this without the safety risk of that unit. Anyone can use the hydraulic jack handle to lift the vehicle as it requires almost no pressure.
Prodigal Overland I just noticed your tag number, I would've tried to get that changed haha. Great video though as always.
I took a Jeep Cherokee trailhawk all the way to the top of Shelby's gap on the middle of Kentucky , Virginia border line, that was a feat for that little vehicle..
They are a tough little ride.. hadnt tested a grand .
The active drive ii lock was awesome, in snow and on trails
No need for disclaimer! Looks like good family fun time all around. The open diffs and high tire pressure got you guys hang up a bit. A bit excessive on gas at some spots. But man, oh man, nothing better good clean fun to relieve some stress, ain’t it👍
Im looking at buying a WK2 in the next few months. Always been a ford guy i was curious how much jeep DNA was left in these....i was hoping they were atleast as capable as the 97 Expedition i had and it looks like they would stomp it on a trail. Very impressed
Damn, not sure I would attempt water that deep, cool!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Not really into the overland aspect, but would love to hit the trails with your group in my xj
Did better than I thought I wouldnt take them out though but cool to see.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for putting up all these great videos. I'd have never thought the WK-2 was capable as it is, if not for these! Been thinking about a V-8 Trailhawk for my next one.....Was also thinking of Gladiator, but don't want to give up Hemi V8 power....
BUT, still have my '07 JGC Limited Hemi with QD-II. Reasons why I don't want to get rid of it just yet is that it has:
rear live axle
front and rear electronic lockers (yes, on the WK-I the QD-II included rear and FRONT lockers!)
also:
no air suspension
current mileage 121,000 low for a 15 year old vehicle.
Keep up the great work, enjoy them very much!
Hang on to that 07!
@@ProdigalOverland
I just might do that! It already has skid plates if I was ever going to try what you are doing I’d add rock rails & a 2” OME lift. Where I am all we have are beaches for 4 wheeling so I haven’t needed to lift any of our Jeeps yet. Just taller tires so you can air down low…..
Brad, another good video. I think you’ve proven the point on how capable this platform can be with the right driver. Haters gonna hate!
Mall crawler... It's the flagship Jeep! These Wrangler guys need to get a clue. I never worry about my WK breaking like they do about theirs.
Had my wk 1 hemi with QD 2 up on 2 wheels it crawled like we had all 4 planted. Travel sucks but it was a traction machine.
When I'm done transforming my 2000 Grand Cherokee Laredo into something more off road I hope to come do the Trails with you at Rauch Creek. I'm just outside Philly. Just start my build. Calling it my Rusty Nut Project. 4" lift, long arm, 4 link to start with.
That's going to be a great build! The WJ is a super capable platform.
4” that’s going to be fun!!
Good video. It's always good seeing what you can and can't do with a vehicle. Sorry for Cory, that had to be expensive. He had offset (to the outside) on those wheels and quite large wheels. That put both more twisting and leveraging force on his suspension making it more likely to bend. It tells me to go no more than 265/65/18 and stick with factory offset, then stick to trails within that setup.
Really good point imo. I am still trying to understand how the offset really helps you better with obstacles. Clearly makes a great stance but does it really help better off-roading?
I thought someone more knowledgeable would answer. But... an inch or two of added width will decrease risk of rollover a little. Like 1 or 2%. Very little but something. Modded jeep buggys go very wide. If that offset just causes the tires to hit the fender more it's not useful offset.
Took my ‘21 GCTH to a jeep festival. I was the only non wrangler there. I’d hear comments like “dibs on towing that rig out”. Well I was the one towing them! Rolled right through everything. Trails, obstacle course, mud pit. All of it.
That’s great!!
Needs a front locker, but these WK2s are definitely not just grocery getters. Also if people are considering one I'd get it with the hemi over the 3.6L. So much more power especially if you plan to lift and put larger tires.
Brad, great video! Did you remove your wheel well liners?
No we haven’t. Although the fro t ones are wearing through.
I want a Cherokee KL. More KL footage please.
Hopefully
Is this the Compass TrailHawk version? Very nice.
The trail hawk has a trail rated badge which means Jeep has tested it in traction, water forging and other off-road scenarios
People underestimate the cherokee trailhawk. Before my first payment was due on my 22 cherokee trailhawk I went and done a night ride with a group of wranglers and gladiators.
I traded my 2015 Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited manual transmission for a 2022 Grand Cherokee WK2 (Quadra-trac II). For everyday use and paved roads there is no comparison. Jeep sells more Grand Cherokees than Wranglers. For off-road, Wranglers have the most capability. The Grand Cherokee is the better choice for practical dual usage. The Grand Cherokee has an incredibly strong unibody and great 4-wheel drive system. The Wrangler wins in the residual value category - they really hold their value in the used car market. Loved my Wrangler Rubicon with manual transmission, but I smile every time I drive my WK2. Grand Cherokee also gets better MPG ratings and has a much more comfortable ride. I believe that everyone should really own both vehicles. I love them both - they are different vehicles for different uses. The Grand Cherokee is deceptively capable off road - they are no slouches. Well, they are a JEEP. Cherokee Trail Hawk is very good too.
I am extremely disappointed I missed you at RC!!!!
Look for us to be back in the fall! And sign up for the newsletter on our website if you haven’t yet. The. You’ll know first when events are announced
The only issue I have with my 2011 grand is ground clearance, but jeep has always had that issue over the years, other than the j20 trucks and cjs, I have no doubt that my grand has the capability to go anywhere and im planning on adding a lift kit and skid plates to enhance that
WK2 Strong 💪
Yes!
had one guy running his mouth about my Cherokee, which is a decently built LATITUDE not even a trail hawk, I swiftly reminded him that my jeep is in the same place his wrangler went. He didn't like it when I said that he needs a rig as built as his was since his skill level isn't up to par
Heya! Another good video, as always. I still remember our run up there last summer. My local club is heading out there in a couple of weeks and I've gotta get Crawler Ridge under my belt. So did anybody actually try JK Killer?
Nope. I couldn’t egg anyone into it. By then Corey’s wheel was all bent. There are several videos online. Nobody makes it.
@@ProdigalOverland I saw an old solid front axle Cherokee with at least a 5 inch lift and 40" M/Ts do it...barely. Don't think I'd want to take anything less, and certainly not a rig with a 20" water limit. Loved Corey's rig, but that was an expensive day out for him, no doubt. Stay safe out there. We're heading down to Peters Mill Run and Flagpole Knob next month once it's ground tent weather..
At the start of the video (around 0:49) you show the JGC being raised with a hi-lift jack. Did he use an extender? The tongue on my jack isn't long enough to properly reach the rock rail and I put a dent in my door having the jack too close.
How well do it perform in sand and snow???? Can you do a video on it.
What psi are you airing down those stock trailhawk tires? I just got a 2022 trailhawk myself and I am just learning offroading.
No. 11 looked like a good martini... shaken not stirred!
👍🏻
Snow m9de is for normal driving in light snow day or hard snow surface. In deep snow you need momentum to even more from start. So use sand mode for no limit performances and mud for slipery depart deep snow/ice as well. Its not only about the surface or the stabilité control . There are more way wheels lock on spin of engin killed as well. I drove mine up nothing Québec Canada and I use the modes.
Also to park down hill of icy condition use slow to lock wheels cause it's a propulsion it will go down and slip ;)
The last time I went to the trail. It look like the Thanksgiving parade. With all the Wrangler trailer Queens
I know what you mean!
Well now I know, I have a 2018 Grand Cherokee, 5.7, with all the luxury items, all the skid plates, air ride, full sun roof. Like I said everything, loaded out. I thought it would be able to handle a trail. Now I know. I owned a 1974 Ramcharger in the late 70's, it saw a lot of trail time. Best vehicle I ever owned. This Grand Cherokee reminds me of it so much. But I have a 2001 Wrangler now too that see's the woods/trails. Just can't bring myself to put the Cherokee out there yet.
Can you put larger diameter tires and wheels on the G Cherokee and still use air ride ?
Been watching your adventures, really enjoy some of the stuff you get into. Keep it up
265/65/18
Don'r get to cocky with it unless you buy an aftermarket lower front guard to replace the PLASTIC belly pan which to me is absurd considering real protection there would bombproof the radiator, the acc sensor housing. Etc
Chief or 6 Monkeys make good lower guards with ACC sensor compatibility it's like adding a skid plate that protects your sump and radiator from below...looks awesome too and I swear it improved fuel efficiency it doesn't hand as low as the stock belly pan
Does lifting the GC Trailhawk mess with the air suspension at all and the Jeep's center of gravity? I've been wondering about this.
Hi,My WK2, in traffic jam, transmission system occasionally makes bang bang sound with shift shock when change gears from 1-2-3 or 3-2-1, especially since i drive from highway to crowded city roads ,do you WK2 has the same situations? thank you.
I bought my wife a grand Cherokee L 4x4 and yes she uses it to do every day mom stuff and you can call it a mall crawler or what ever you want. All in know is that she loves it and that if she ever encounters a situation where she needs the 4x4 it’s there available for her. When someone gives me money to purchase a vehicle I’ll start caring what they think about how we use it. Lol
We did this in a Volvo station wagon filled with amps, guitars, and a Wurlitzer.
