The temprees cover of this is the best
To the One I love is a beautiful song with superb vocal harmonies. Michelle Phillips has a beautiful voice.
Oh man this is a great song. And the lyrics are so beautiful. Love to know who actually wrote them. And then they weave the music around them. Magical.

The Shirelles did a version earlier in the 60s. Though, I do like The Mama's and the Papas version much better
I did the research. This song was originally released by the "5" Royales in 1957. The Shirelles released their version in 1959 and 1961 (it barely made the charts in '59 but reached #3 in '61). The Mamas and The Papas covered it in 1967. Lots of others covered the song, but these 3 groups were the ones that had hits with it.

Shirelles
The Temprees made a cover in about 1972 that was extra soulful. They put their hearts in the song. - The Mamas & Papas might be the best harmonies to cover it.
You are right!! The Beatles were heavily influenced by California sound, and loved the Beach Boys and the Byrds.
There was a lot of cross pollination back then.
I really wish that Credit would be given to the original singers of this song The Shirelles in 1960
