Been doing tv & electronics repair for over 50 years, It just keeps getting worse for the servicemen, panel failures, surface mount components, I am still using vintage equipment REPAIRABLE as my own daily drivers, CRT tvs, even some tube based stuff, most all of my repair work now is tube based antique radios.

Another thing occurs to me. With the prism sheet darkened like that heat spots will tend to build up in the already burned places.. Leading to more burning and another failure.. Also have to wonder how far those leds are being over-run. Like filament bulbs the hotter you run them the shorter the lifespan. Maybe leds are not the best solution here at all.

And I've had some terrible luck with Panasonic TV's over the years while all of my Samsung's have been great. When you consider that I purchased all of them used for no more than $200 each, I've been quite satisfied. I really think there's a quality difference in different regions. I've noticed that some of the sets on the channel have been made in Hungary; this one's from Slovakia. I just checked the back panel of mine and it was built in 2017 in Mexico. Just a thought.

hey Alan , top repair as usual quick question would it not be possible to sandwich the prism sheet between two bits of wood along that burnt edge and then take a soft pad grinder and gently remove 2mm or so of the edge that's burnt i know its going to shorten the sheet slightly so you might get a dark bit a very slight bit at the very top , not saying its going to make it perfect but it might give a better result than leaving it , yes i know time is money but as an experiment it could be worth a shot

Just scrape of 0.1 to 0.2 mm off the edge that is backend. Light wil be great again. Done it a few times and worked great. The old thing has been as reliable as the day is long. I think the main reason for the reliability is it was switched off at the mains when we finished with it. I actually like the curved screen and I think there's still a model currently available with a curved screen. From what I've seen, it's only on the 75" or larger sets now (at the time, 55" was considered large). I mostly see the curved screens used to great effect with computer monitors.

Makes me want to go back to CRT. My parents worked at Pye Lowestoft back in the 70s and our first colour telly (an export version of the CT72 bought from the factory shop) lasted about 11 years. I remember seeing the glow from the valves as well as the end of the tube through the vent holes. It's sad to see this with modern consumer electronics. Will be interesting to see the difference with a new prism sheet.

    • @akakjb
      @akakjb 28 дней назад

Yeah, I really want to see what the prism sheet does for it.
I've still got a massive SONY CRT "bigscreen" TV. It was one of their last large tube TV's and at the time was the largest one they released. The picture on it even now is just incredible. HD content looks great. But it's huge and weighs slightly more than the combined mass of the Solar System. I wound up with it for free several years ago. Pre-pandemic, we had an auction house just a few blocks away and they'd get the contents of a lot of unclaimed storage lockers. After the auction, they'd just leave the leftovers out for the trash pickup on Monday morning. At one point, I saw at least one of these SONY monsters there, often with their very expensive cabinets and the whole package, for about 8 weeks in a row. I finally took one just because I couldn't stand seeing them getting dumped into the landfill (which they shouldn't be anyway but that's a whole other rabbit hole I don't want to fall into ever again).
Having said all that, I love my curved Samsung 55". If I can pick up another 1 or 2 cheap for my studio, I'll probably use them on the set.

One thing I did notice - the ones we have in the US have black bezels, not silver. I wonder if the reason you're having these burn up so badly and ours in the US don't seem to be faring as poorly is the difference in voltage. I'm wondering if they're designed for 110 and they have problems dealing with the 220 over time.

When I removed the diffuser panel, I noticed it had a bit of a serrated edge over the leds that failed. After seeing this video, I see now that the diffuser panel was melted. The damaged leds were absolutely burned in comparison to the new replacements. As a preventive measure for those using this type of edge lit device, turn your backlight/brightness down as comfortable as possible. That's just sad. TVs are all land filler, anymore. It's hard to get a "dumb" TV, and smart TVs aren't all that smart. You're better off getting a dongle, an android box, or a computer to use with it. They put weak computers in all smart TVs. You're getting a crappy experience, and that's before they insert commercials into the video whenever the picture isn't moving. It's the hell not your TV even though you bought it. My next TV is going to be a computer monitor. I grew up back when the living room TV was only 19 inches, and you can get computer monitors larger than that, now. They also have better color rendering and are built to last, um, longer.

Probably not, in the latter case; The Prism sheet has an array of light paths moulded into it which route and reflect the light from the LEDs (Facing up) behind and then through the screen (Out) toward the user. Trying to bond a new piece of Prism sheet into place would have the same effect as trying to re-weld a severed multi-channel fiber-optic strand.

They do this to your LED light bulbs so they'll fail sooner. Now, they're placing them inside a glass envelope so you can't repair it if you wanted to without destroying it. I just hope that we don't get to the point where we're replacing light bulbs once a month like we were in the 1990s. The bulbs were really cheap, but not all bulbs are easy to replace. The frightening thing is that most light fixtures made today have permanent LEDs in them, so you have to replace the entire light fixture. That's pretty horrifying since they are hard wired. I can do it, but it's a pain. Also, house wiring isn't meant to be messed around with that often. It would be horrible to have to replace light fixtures every month. Manufacturers would love it.

I'll never pay that much when I can always find one second hand for less than half price within months of purchase for some reason. I picked up a 6-month-old LG 75" 8k top of the line set around last Christmas for $125. Its still current on the floor price, not mfgr list, was in the same range as the one you mentioned, just shy of $1,800. They basically wanted a new one to gift themselves for Christmas and convinced themselves the menus ran too slow.
Whatever. I was happy for the deal so I could pair it with the family gift of a PS5.
There are just some things I can not justify paying full price for and electronics is one of them. The exception being some high-end specialized things I use in my work but other than that, it's all horrendously overpriced to the point of price gouging.

I agree, that is a crap design, but here in lays a problem. I have always gone with Samsung TV's and I have a 42" 4K ultra HD TV which is exhibiting 3 largish blue or purple areas on the screen and the TV is about 5 years old. This is I take it as the LEDs are blueish colour with a phosphorous coating to make them appear white, which was suffered damage over the years of use and so it is not worthwhile having them replaced with new ones. In the video, you say that Samsung has gone from being the best to the worst manufacturer today.
So what brand would you recommend as being a worthwhile TV that I should consider as a replacement for it now?
On the other hand, I have a couple of 23" LG monitors on my PCs which my old company purchased for me about 10 years ago, and I have been retired now for 6 years and these monitors are still as good as new and the PCs are on daily for about 15 or 16 hours 7 days a week, is that standard still being exhibited today on their TV's?

Given I _think_ I can see a data rail on the cable that runs into the mainboard from the PSU, the „fault“ you mentioned at 03:42 was probably caused by somebody refusing to open a [Manufacturer] account and/or refusing or taking too long to pay a „mandatory“ subscription connected to their TV in some way. 💰🛂📺🤔
As for that „backlight“ design; That has to be the most utterly terrible one I have seen yet. I can understand illuminating from the edge rather than behind - That means adding just 10mm (1/2") height to the set, rather than _x_ cm/in more thickness - But from _only one side_ rather than both? I'm not at all surprised those LEDs burned out - Illuminate from both long edges, and you need _half_ the light output from each LED array...And LEDs aren't exactly the most expensive of components. 🔥
(Moreso, there's a few strengthening troughs in the central support frame. They could have easily put some central area lighting in those with minimal additional diffusion required. 💡)
Seeing how the „back“ lighting works, the „Prism sheet“ will contain an array of light paths formed into the glass using very complicated and intricate processes that aren't available in the UK, hence why they have to be ordered from France (The only place that can probably make them reliably enough). Had things been slightly different since 2016 a new Prism sheet would probably only cost €50,- (Plus €15,- shipping) and no import duty to worry about, but that's the way things go I suppose... 🛂
But aye; This manufacturer have _really_ gone downhill over the past 4-5 years and that's why I've sent their equipment/brand the same way I sent a certain U.S. brands products (They're _„Designed in California, made in a hurry“_ 🍎😉) a couple of years before. Good riddance to overpriced, badly engineered, short-life rubbish, I say! 📱🗑👍
(P.S: Try to edit out that serial number from the start of the vid, if you can. It might dox the customers identity to the manufacturer, if they've registered the product for warranty or whatever. ⚠)
