I was watching World Idol on or around New Years when I heard someone start to sing that was incredibly talented. I remember calling in my wife and parents into the living room and all of us were amazed. I followed him for awhile afterwards and he seemed to do pretty well for his geographical area. It was great seeing Kelly Clarkson's reaction when she lost. She probably thought being from the U.S, as am I, that she would "walk it".

The performance was great but I called Kurt as the winner when I saw his relaxed attitude between the performances. Kelly Clarcson, the woman who was supposed to win this if we ever were going to have world idol again, seemed stuck up. Kurt seemed down to earth and relaxed like he was just having a laugh. Perfect voice control, which isn't exactly easy in this difficult song. I think the judges learned from this first year that you can't pick a pop star on looks. But they are incredibly rude-hard to believe you could say that to someone, especially on tv in front of millions. Kurt has a stunning voice, and I've been watching all of his videos on RUclips since I first heard him. I'm happy that no one listened to the judges, most of all Kurt.

I get Simon's point, and it's very true. (Not that Kurt is ugly, I personally think he's adorable.). The thing is that when the Norwegian judges made him such an underdog by those comments they made the Norwegian people determined to prove them wrong. I remember watching this World Idol 2004 audition years ago, and there was absolutely no doubt whatsoever, that Kurt Nilsen had the best voice in the whole competition. I was so happy that he won.........and yes, he sounds BETTER than BONO! The judges' comments about his appearance were very negative........he is not ugly, he is just a normal looking Norwegian guy, and in the end, it's TALENT that takes you places!!

Brenda - I always found Leonard Cohen to be very good looking. To each their own! :) He was also very humble. Here in Canada, we have the Juno Awards and when Cohen won best male vocalist he laughed and graciously said something like "Only in a Canada could I get male vocalist of the year." However, when it came to raw emotion, painfully beautiful poetry, and the honest deliverance of a song, no one could hold a candle to him.
I loved his voice the day it aired 16 years ago (although it was completely unoriginal version, I didn't care). Over a decade and a half later I haven't head literally anything about him since.

No doubt that Kurt had the best voice in that competition, but Simon Cowell's ''ugly people'' comment made people angry and started voting for Kurt right away. Kelly clarkson was suppose to win this, I think this competetion was staged before hand, because of all the commercials of kelly clarkson in between, so the comments really helped kurt, but no doubt that he has a fantastic voice!

okai, what the fuck?! Kurt Nilsen is an awesome singer! He was the best in this competiotion, and people are wrong to judge him after his looks. And he is not ugly at aaaall! It's just his teeth. People just didn't want a little country like Norway to win something big like this. But that can't change the fact that he was much better then all of the others.

I totally agree with you there! And I've had this discussion before. No doubt that Kurt had the best voice in that competition, but Simon Cowell's ''ugly people'' comment made people angry and started voting for Kurt right away. Kelly clarkson was suppose to win this, I think this competetion was staged before hand, because of all the commercials of kelly clarkson in between, so the comments really helped kurt, but no doubt that he has a fantastic voice!

btw. .... I've been to a lot of Kurt and his "guitar buddies" concert...search on youtube.. ;) (Espen Lind, Alejandro Fuentes and Askil Holm). Kurt has a stage charm like no other. He njust live inside the music. I hope everyone gets the chance to see him live. He is better live than recorded, and he has for sure a lot of charm :)

i remember this was it back in 2003? i remember kelly sang her heart out, but then when i heard him wow! at first i thought who is this person surfacing from middle earth? but then i knew he'll will even though kelly clarkson in terms of record number won hands down... i don't think they ever had world idol 2 or anymore after this one. cool seeing all the idols perform. the one from australlia, one who couldn't sing english....
@christopherducati You can't compare them by how many albums they have sold. They are two completely different persons, who sings different genre's. Kurt is the real winner :)
