He also sat for everyone else's scenes.
Big actors will typically leave when they're not being filmed and someone will sit in and read their lines for others to react to.
Nicholson sat and gave his full performance even when he wasn't the primary in the shots and the rest of the cast has said his every read was exactly the same which helped feed the other actors.

After many years of watching, that statement while it sounds great, it is a lie. As stated earlier in the film, having loyalty to the Core is the most important thing even above God, to Marines. Hence, they are NOT "supposed to fight for people who couldn't fight for themselves". They are supposed to follow commands to reach an objective or die in the process of completion of the 'mission' at ALL costs. (even death) Marines or any soldier, for that matter, are NOT allowed to question or oppose a direct command, even if it is immoral, unethical, or criminal.

    • @brianharris3714
      @brianharris3714 Год назад +35

@silverlobo2135 Not since Nuremberg. The Code of Military Justice states clearly that no soldier is to follow an order that violates international, federal, state, or even municipal law, and if they do, they’ll be held responsible not only in civilian courts, but in military court as well. The military is not above the law, nor should it be.

My all-time favorite Tom Cruise movie definitely in the top 50 movies of all time. Tom Cruise gave an interview about Jack Nicholson saying he came in for the first reading. Everybody was sloppy and all over the place. Jack came in and delivered all of his lines perfectly in character He stood, smiled and said children that's how it's done. Turned around and walked out. He said I learned to be an actor that day. Jack made everybody lift their game. That's why this movie was so good.

Jack Nicholson is a great professional. When shooting that last scene, they were first shooting Tom Cruise shots, reaction shots, and various other angles. They did Nicholson's main shot last. As he said his lines for the secondary shots he gave his full performance. People told him he should hold back and save it for his main shot. He felt they should have the performance they were reacting to, and he still had that amazing performance for his shot at the end.

Luckily, the good intentioned Marines heavily outnumber those types. In essence, proportionally this is not so different from normal society. Now I’ve become aware of the surprisingly large category of media reactions, so many channels to choose. I’ve also seen this Reiner masterpiece when it was first released in theaters, and numerous reviews by your genre of “reactors”. I really love you guys, it’s been so much fun witnessing your responses, but this is another case where your editing and elimination of key dialogue and events lessens the impact of the story, even though I know it by heart. Example: Danny takes interest in Santiago’s uniforms hanging in the closet. You skipped that, but it becomes important later on. I can only imagine the effort it takes to decide how to trim a film down for time, but please be more prudent with what you leave in, and take out.

This is a phenomenal film with as you say an all-star cast. They all do a fantastic job but Jack is the boss. He can play crazy like no one else

I seriously don't think he is acting when he plays crazy(JK). He's also great in As good As It Gets

Apparently when filming the court room scene, Nicholson asked for the scenes where Tom is on camera to be done first, with Jack playing his role off camera, to give Jack a bit more time to rehearse. But he ended up playing the scenes off screen with the same intensity as in the film. He recited his speech off camera 40 to 50 times, for different camera angles, close ups, two shots etc. Finally, Rob Reiner took him aside and said ‘Jack, you can save some for your shoot if you want’, meaning he could just relax a bit since he was off camera. Nicholson apparently said ‘Rob, you don’t understand. I just love to act…’. Jack was paid $5 million for 10 days work. Tom got 12.5 million. Tom was 30 years old when he made the film. He looks like a baby. I just love this film. It’s one of Tom’s best.

Jack nailed every bit of the courtroom stuff on the first take. He still did six more takes with the same intensity even though he was told it wasn't necessary. He said something about how much he loves acting and it being a great part, so he was just going to spend the day going hard at it.

Dawson's character arc is the most satisfying thing in the whole movie for me. He was deeply entrenched within a cult and, by the end, he learns a critical ethical lesson. He and Kaffee have a tumultuous relationship that ends in mutual respect. Also, the problem with "chains of command" is that they can serve more than one purpose. When in the hands of ethical people, they keep communication and decision-making healthy. When in the hands of unethical people, they can be exploited to protect unethical actions. But only at the very top where the power is concentrated.

Nicholson’s performance was so riveting that other actors who worked on the film would come to set on their days off to watch him.

Kendrick was portrayed by Kiefer Sutherland. He was in Lost Boys, Stand by Me and he also played Jack Baur on 24.

This is absolutely one of Tom's greatest performances! A perfect role! Another one I love is Far & Away.
Also, there is a movie also from 1992 called Gladiator that has one of these Marines in it that I recommend.

If you'd like to see the greatest movie ever, about a Jury deliberating on a case, watch the original 12 Angry Men (not the remake). It's an older movie with a star studded cast including the legendary Henry Fonda (One of the top 5 actors in history in my opinion).

12:25 The man seen driving the HMMV (Hummer) is Noah Wyle who is most famous for playing Doctor John Carter on the TV show ER from 1994 to 2009. He also has played the character Flynn Carson in the 3 made for TV movies The Librarian, as well as guest starring in the short lived TV series of the same name (all of which aired on the cable channel USA).
