When playing with a Controller or Touchscreen you have the ability of target lock. And because of the hammer having such high velocity it’s very effective so it not having homing is also not a problem.
This was always my favourite terraria weapon and it will hold a spot in my heart forever. I remember getting it from a friend on terraria xbox 360 1.2. I thought it was pretty cool and I never knew how to get it at that time.
I remember around the time I started playing the game, someone joined my Xbox 360 world and just dropped me a dragon armor set, red's wings, and a paladins hammer. The paladins hammer is really underated why it is a rare drop from the paladin it's worth to get cuz of it's performance. But there's also another weapon then you can get from Killing plantera and it's called the *Leaf blower*
Back in the day, in 1.2, definitely one of the best weapons. I used to use it in PvP a lot because, comparatively, weapons such as the hatchet just weren't fast enough. Terrablade was definitely quite powerful too, but can be easy to dodge.
For these kind of melee weapon videos you should use the best hybrid set for dps (chloro mask, monk shirt and squire greaves) to showcase how much damage a weapon can do
when i tried to get the paladin's hammer it took me 32 paladin's to get it,4 hours of grinding just for me to get the terra blade 40 minutes later. Did get like 9 platinum out of it though
I think the dynamic between the hammer and the hatchet are like that of the phantasm and the vortex beater, in that the paladin's hammer has higher damage but requires you to take more of a risk, while the possessed hatchet has slightly lower damage but will keep you at a much safer distance and allow you to focus more on dodging. I'm not sure how I would add piercing to this equation, but at the very least the hatchet can't hold a candle to the hammer in the crowd control game.
If your playing melee I think I would go with the hammer but as a summoner main, the ease of use of the hatchet while being able to focus on dodging bosses is very helpful, at least before summoners had whips
With buffs, damage beetle armor, full damage accessories minus two for mobility (in master) and you can easily get 225+ damage, is crazy strong in some scenarios. P.S.: I mean the damage on the tooltip not the dps
Back in the old 1.2 Days in the Mobile port, Paladin’s Hammer was always THE weapon to have as a melee player, alongside the Terra Blade. Because back in the days it wasn’t autoswing and everything in the Mobile port was autoswing, Paladin’s Hammer easily was S-Tier back in the day. Only reason why it was beat out by the Hatchet was because of its update in 1.3, and the way to obtain the thing. Still really love the Hammer, as the damage is really good, and the range can just be increased by melee speed, making it one of the best melee weapons pre-Cultist. If it could go through walls, this weapon would easily be just the slightly worse version of the Solar Eruption.
Tbh I think the fact that we don't have paladin vanity set in game is a bit of a mistake. I want to be just like a real mob, going around with shield and hammer in my arms, defeating everyone and everything on sight.
range isnt a major problem if you can lead enemies into your shots. additionally due to the fast projectile speed it can be used to aim much more reliably and so having no homing doesnt feel bad. amazing weapon overall
So there's a hammer which acts like a boomerang, and an axe that acts like a boomerang. What's next, a pickaxe that acts like a boomerang? Or a fishing rod?
In PVP this thing is unbelievably strong due to 3 reasons. 1 being people rarely use things like star cloak or cross necklace for PVP, 2 the rebound can also hit and with the less I frames from not using the prior mentioned defense accessories it can easily do the double hit, 3 it just has high base damage.
The Paladin's Hammer is a weapon I used to love in 1.2, but using it today, feels a bit sluggish and inconsistent with aiming + the massive knockback compared to the Possessed Hatchet, I still love the single target performance of the Paladin's Hammer though.
i don't usually use either weapon but when i do, the hatchet is better because of the homing as fast bosses (i play modded) can be homed on and defeated with relative ease
I want them to add Paladin armor, obtained after golem, buffs your damage when you use the paladin's hammer, increasing defense with the paladin's shield. The downside would be that it slows your movement by 25-30%.
When i played 1.2 on mobile bc i had no pc, Paladin's Hammer was the definitive weapon for melees, high use speed, infinite piercieng, you can use flasks with it and the highest damage in the game
I remember getting the paladins hammer on mobile pre 1.3 when I accidentally dropped my terra blade and some random person took it and gave me the hammer. Ever since then I got used to it and use it a lot even with it flaws
Another tip when fighting paladin, he won't attack if you keep always hitting him witha fast hitting weapon so you can easily take him out even with true melee
The Paladin enemy isn’t deadly so as long as you keep hitting it. The Paladin’s attacks gets canceled whenever he’s getting hit, basically just use a weapon that is atleast decently fast 3 swings per second. And stick to him in Melee
I always used this. First time I played terraria a friend gave me both this and the terrablade. This is a weapon I'm shocked people don't use, and I love using it if I'm lucky enough to get it's drop

Yes at least calamity and other weapons make up with them being awesome
Also the end with the super fast hammer is ridiculous
the issue with paladin's hammer is the insane knockback if it didn't knock enemies so far away you'd be able to clear large groups much quicker
Yes, but the damage it does usually makes up for it (killing most enemies quick enough before they get knocked away)
Considering that plenty of enemies have a ton of knockback resistance in the later game, I'd say that's a feature. It also helps group up enemies.
I think it’s more single target damage than a group weapon
Then again, it’s a massive hammer going at lightning speed so I’d expect it to have lots of knock back
Really wished there was a “condensed” reforge which reduces size and knockback but gives 3-5% more damage than godly/legendary
I usually go for the ruthless prefix as I feel the reduced knockback works well on dealing with mobs.
