  • Welcome to my knitting world of million techniques you can use to make better knits!
This video shows you how to create permanent fold in ribbing. Part 2 of this video addresses the purpose of the permanent fold in knitwear, how to finish it, and what happens next.
Where would you use a permanent fold in ribbing? Mostly in trims at the neckline, sleeves, mittens and gloves, and socks.
I tried many versions of it and here is how it works:
it is amazing when used in 1x1, 2x2, 3x3, and possibly 4x4 rib. Simple knit and purl. I have not tried it with any other decorative ribbing.
use a minimum of 3 rows and a maximum of 5 or 6. Why? It's a double fabric material with some "missing" stitches ( the ones that you slip) so the fold itself is not as hefty. It is thinned-out material. If it makes any sense.
If you work it in the round repeat this round anywhere from 3 to 6 times:
knit all the knit stitches in the ribbing, and slip all the purl stitches in the ribbing purlwise with the yarn in front.
If you work flat repeat the next two rows as many times as you see fit - I suggest 2 minimum ( you don't have to repeat them in tandem, if you want/need an odd number of rows):
Row 1: knit all the knit stitches in the ribbing, and slip all the purl stitches in the ribbing purlwise with the yarn in front.
Row 2: purl all the purl stitches of the rib, and slip all the knit stitches purlwise with the yarn at the back of the work.
Please let me know if you know this technique, if you used it, if you like it or if you don't like it.

This technique is so clever and it seems like a perfect fix for my problem. I guess I'm about to frog half the rows I already have on my beanie 😂 Thank you so much for your clear instructions and video, this is brilliant!

Thank you for these videos. I want to do this on a hat, like you did. It seems to me that the fold would make the brim fold to the inside of the hat. After the fold, does the right side/wrong side switch?
