- This video shows you how to get 6 flight modes for APM 2.5 with a Turnigy 9X transmitter and stock firmware. This is a follow-up to my original vid that shows how to do 3 flight modes with a Turnigy 9X:
• Turnigy 9x Transmitter...
I wanted to get a few more flight modes for my APM 2.5 and figured out how to do this with the help of the ArduCopter wiki:
code.google.co...
Please post any questions if you have any problems with this setup. Good luck!
Thanks for watching and the feedback. Glad it helped.
Let me see what I can do. I don't have a NAZA w/ GPS so I'd probably just demonstrate the setup vs showing how it works in the air. Let me see what I can do. Thanks for the comment.
This video is very well put together, I found this after finding the earlier video for setting up 3 flight modes, I was missing out on the keywords when searching since I'm using Flysky TH9X and Pixhawk with Mission Planner which I now realize is pretty much the same thing shown here. Very articulate and easy to follow, I'd still like to punch the manufacturer though for making this so very not straightforward. It's almost like they wanted this to be some obscure black art.
Hi Matthew, thanks for the kind words. One reason I do these videos is because it takes me so long to figure the menus out and I'm afraid I may forget!
Thank you. I appreciate you taking the time to watch.
No problem. Thanks for watching and hope you get it setup okay.
Brilliant. I watched this when I was first getting into Multirotors and thought it was too complicated and bought a 9xR. I just set up an APM on a QUAD and watched again. Very simple really. My preference is to use all the UP modes as RTL and use the 3 position switch as your 3 flight modes. This way you can always tell it to come home without trying to remember where the switches are at. Just flick the Gear switch. Only 4 modes but simplified for the novice or fat fingered flyer. Great video and thank you very much. I will make a brief video with my modification to your setup and link to yours for the rest.
Simon Hahnel Very good info and glad to hear you've modified it to find something that fits your needs. Thanks for sharing.
Simon, I like your comment. Have you made the video yet?
Thank you for the clear and concise instructions. You make quality How To video's. This is the most comprehensive instruction I have received on mixing, let alone flight mode selection.
+Tommy Armour Thank you so much for the feedback. It's much appreciated.
thank you so much u are a breath of fresh air , i have no one near to help so my rc experience comes from youtube and the net reading forums your vids are fantastic and u take the time to show the little things that others dont so thank you cheers bazz
Bazz smith Thanks so much for the kind words. I'm glad the videos are helping. Good luck as you get further into this hobby. Take care.
You're very welcome. Thanks for watching.
Really great appreciated your tuts, Dennis. We are noobs and your videos really help us (my brother and I) to configure and understand.
Thanks so much.
Pepe García Thanks so much for the feedback. It's much appreciated.
I know this is an old video but i only just got this controller as a FlySky 9x exaxtly the same controller. Without videos like this Noob's like myself would be knackered its not an easy controller to program so thankyou so much. just getting into fixed wing and pixhawk this will make it all so much easier.
Glad to hear. Good luck with your programming and configuration!
You're welcome and thank you for the feedback. I had always flown my multis in Heli mode until I discovered that Acro mode allows us to do this. So I'll never fly Heli again :)
Thanks a lot for this video I was searching it from long and today after watching this i setup all 6 modes... thanks a lot again .. :)
Glad to hear it. Thanks for watching.
Great Video Dennis, Thank You. Following step-by-step I now have 6 programed flite modes. Turnigy 9X (Stock) and MultiWii Pro with MegaPirate.
You're very welcome. Glad to hear it.
GM Dennis. Love your videos and set ups. Being some what of a senior and young at heart. I've gotten into the quads and multi engine craft some time ago. I've had all kinds of problems with set up and now, thanks to you and some others. Life is much more enjoyable thru your video help. The APM board is so awesome. I have been built a full system and use a 13 inch monitor from Wal Mart that is 12 volt dc, mounted on a tri pod from a second hand store and with the FPV and OSD system I now have hooked up. The wiring is much more understanding, thanks to all the videos. You guys are awesome. Thanks Much for All Your Work and Help. Most Appreciated. EdK
+Edward Kasprowicz Ed thanks so much for the good words. We are all young at heart when it comes to this hobby. So rewarding and so much fun.....and incredibly challenging too! Sounds like you have a great setup going. I hope you get some good flight time in 2016. Happy New Year!
No problem. Thanks for watching.
Dude! You are the man! Thanks so much! Mine was a bit different because I'm using a Pixhawk flight control board which uses PPM encoding. I switched the #5 lead to the #6 spot on mu receiver and left the #6 lead out. APM kept recognizing the changes on the #6 channel. Anyways, all is working. Turnigy 9x with stock firmware and 6 modes on a Pixhawk!
Thanks Matt :) It's a continual learning process where most of the time I sit there and scratch my head. But glad to hear this is working for you.
did you use a ppm encoder to do this?
F. C. Bearsch Yeah, it's a must. It was a bit confusing because the 9x literature mentions PPM encoding. However I don't believe it is possible with the stock hardware. I bought the one from 3DR.
can you please share the video or pictures of how you have done, because I'm struggling with this I have fly sky th9x transmitter and how can i connect channel 6 in ppm encoder
excellent thankyou very much for sharing this was the only part i did not know about calibrating my quad and turnigy 9 and you have made it look all so simple..you deserve a few beers after this young man thankyou
Thanks for this video, it really helped me with the flight modes. I did notice that I didn't need to be in ACRO mode since the HELI mode has 3 mixes which is enough for this.
kaotixcrew Glad to hear it. Thanks for watching.
This video is worth it's time in gold. I was looking into modding my my radio for a 6 position switch and you, my friend, just saved me A LOT of trouble. When I show my brother, he'll be very pleased as well. Final question, does your quad respond as it should when you switch into the different modes? Thanks so VERY much.
coffcraft Thank you so much for the good words. Glad to hear it helped. Yes, my multirotor does respond as expected when I change into these different modes.
Nice again Dennis, it's a good job you are here as our master teacher yet another very detailed video from the master, Thanks again Dennis I eagerly await your video of complete step by step setup of f450 with apm and turnigy 9x using latest version of mission planer..graham uk
Hi Graham, I hope all is well and Happy New Year! I have a HKPilot coming from HobbyKing and wanted to test with that. When it comes I'll do a video and hopefully it will be identical to setting up APM. If not, I'll see if I can work on the video you requested in the coming weeks. Just right now my APM is on one of my planes and I don't want to take it off :)
You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for taking the time to look at this problem. For now, I will use the two position setup since it works and continue to tinker with this issue. I will let you know if I have any luck resolving the problem. I am thinking about modifying my transmitter so I can upload the ER9X software. From what I've read, the ER9X software is better than the stock software. Thanks again for your willingness to help me with this problem and keep up the good work on your other videos!
This video has helped me set up my transmitter twice now. Thanks for a great tutorial.
McSaucy Pants You bet. Glad it helped and thanks for the comment.
Thanks. I just about gave up trying to get a copter to hover using helicopter modes. The Acro mode worked just fine. My new tricopter should be here in a week and I'll try out the 6 flight modes.
I think a servo would see it just fine, but haven't tried it. It's sending out standard pwm signals so you could technically send the servo to different positions based on the switch position. Thanks for kind words.
Very good video i will soon get my apm 2.6 and do it like this. Thanks a lot.
Thanks for showing us. This is great. Now I just need to set the failsafe in case something happens in flight.
Thanks, Nev. Good luck and let me know if you run into any problems.
Thanks for a great video, I have no idea how anyone can understand these menu's, but obviously you do! Thanks for sharing!
Matthew
Congratulations Dennis Baldwin, excellent tutorial. Happy 2014. Greetings here in São Paulo, Brazil ..
Roberto Barsottini
Thank you, Roberto! Grettings from Austin, TX and Happy New Year.
Great information. Nice job figuring it all out. Just what I was looking for. Thank you!
+Jerry Wayne No problem. Glad it helped.
Thanks, great explanation and very practical for all people that uses APM and Turnigy 9x like me :-), thanks again.
Javier Arellano-Verdejo No problem at all. Thank you for the feedback.
You're welcome and hope all is well.
Hiya Dennis :
Many thanks for very helpful and informative videos , I am new to quads and I think they are great .
Finally decided to build my own Quadcopter using the APM 2.5 and Mission Planner , I am using an SK450 standard frame from Hobbyking and a FlySky TH9X radio and RX.
At the moment I am having the same problem as Markely Boyer with the FlySky...
This note is just to confirm to you both that this problem with 9X does exist . I will try Markley suggestion.
Cheers Dennis...!!!
Ramon.
Awesome! Worked exactly as shown in the video. Many thanks for sharing.
Thanks Glenn. Appreciate you watching.
thumbs up, i followed your instructions step by step and then hooked it up to MP and it worked perfectly, thank you for your videos, i will subscribe
Marcio Cardenas So glad to hear that and thanks for the feedback.
What happens if you set CH5 in AUX-CH to Gear instead of doing it on CH6? Am just trying to understand what's going on with your setup.
Very nice explanation and narration. I'm thinking about a drone build,so it's helpful.
Thanks and good luck with your build.
Thank you.... thank you... thank you... Works perfect on Walkera QR x350 PRO PNF version with stock Turnigy 9x v2 tx+ Orange DSM2 module + orange DSM2 rx. Thank you... thank you.... thank you so muchhhh....
melvpatrick1 So glad to hear that. Thanks for the feedback!
You did this in a kind of over complicated manner. You could have done all that more efficiently by having the 3 position switch control what mode you were in, and then have the 2 position switch just change the signal rate. As in, have it be like: M1 = N, M2 = 1, M3 = 2, then you flip the 2 position switch and have it: M4 = 2, M5 = 1, M6 = N... that way, you only flip the 2 position switch when you want the second half. this saves you from having to think about what mode you are in every time you flip that 3 position switch. Makes it ALOT less confusing, specially for 'newbies'.
But I do have to say, I like the idea of using a channel and 'mixing' the switches together to accomplish this task instead of doing what I've found others accomplishing: setting up functions that do the same thing. Though I imagine functions would be abit harder for people to generally understand yet its alot 'cleaner' to do. So having things done by creating mixes solves this for basically anyone who has a transmitter that can do mixes but not functions =D Good job!
Very awesome tip. I haven't flown with my T9X in a long time but I'd like to revisit this with your suggestion. That's what I love about our community. Someone posts an idea and then someone improves upon it and the cycle goes on and on. Appreciate your suggestion and hopefully others can benefit from it. Thanks.
No problem. Finally someone who doesn't yell at me XD
can you do a vid what hikari said would it be easy to do ? thx dennis
Hi Dennis, I set mine up with the three position switch being flight modes 1, 2, 3 with gear down then 4, 5, and 6 with gear switch up. I put RTL (Oh Crap Mode!) on number 6 and 3 so no matter which way the the three position and gear combo were at all I have to do is flip the three position to down #3/6 and it goes into RTL.
Sorry to hear that. What a pain to be almost in the air and have the wrong cable :) Let me know how it goes with the APM 2.6.
Thank you, Graham. I'm glad to hear that it helped and best of luck with your build. Always feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Better yet, check out garagepilots . com and feel free to post in our forums. Take care.
Dennis, yes it's in Acro mode. I'm pretty sure I followed your instructions precisely, but could never get Channel 5 PWM to move. I really don't understand conceptually what the Mixes are doing - why GYR and FLP are used - so makes it hard to troubleshoot! It was only through blind fiddling that I stumbled across the working solution. Please do let me know if you have any insights after reading my longer description on DIYDrones. Thanks.
Hi Dennis,
perfect tutorial!!!!! You are THE BEST!!
Thank you very much for all. Keet it up!!!
No problem. Thanks for the good words.
you guys could use one of those rotating switches; but yea, it would suck to hit the exact value on the dail for the mode you want to choose
Yeah that would be cool. I'd like to look into one. Thanks for the tip.
Thanks Dennis this really helped me understand what was going on, Brilliant😊
+Trevor Vernon No problem. Thanks for the feedback and glad it helped.
Dennis, I haven't had time to doing thing with mine still waiting on the cable's and been busy, but have you checked on how a servo would see this on ch 6, just wondering.
And yes I to thought about upgrading the firmware, BUT I like to learn all we can about the stock firmware. And Dennis has done some really hard work on this and helping us all. Big thanks to Dennis.
I keep getting an error message failure to set flight modes, I followed instructions and setup TX & RX to board, successful calibration but flight modes are not saving.
Hi, I don't specifically tune my PIDs. What I do is use the Save Trim and Auto Trim features to stable my quad automatically. Check out my video titled "APM 2.5 & ArduCopter 3.0.1 Auto Trim and Save Trim Compared" to see if that helps.
Nice share bro, now have 6 flight mode on my quad.... Yataaa......!!
+DJ NT Well done. Thanks for sharing.
Have you messed with the Endpoints in your TX settings at all? You should be able to adjust the travel of those switches...hopefully.
Great! Thanks for sharing this to us Dennis. Bravo!
Thanks Dennis rely appreciate you putting up these videos I wish you had upgraded firmware on your 9x then I could totally cheat the menus are a little different
That's interesting. You know, I've heard others mention this as well and I haven't been able to put my finger on it. I'm assuming you're configuring with your TX in acro mode? I wish I had a Flysky TH9X to compare notes, but will see if I can dig up your description on diydrones. Thanks for the comment.
Do you see any PWM value on CH5 or is it just 0? Are you running stock firmware or er9x?
Hi there one more question.... Why you select aux ch5 in turnigy but you connect the apm in ch6 on receiver why not ch6 in aux menu of turnigy? Hope to understand my question... Thanks in advance..
John, this week I'll look into this a little further and see what I can find out. I can't seem to figure out what the problem is with your setup. Hope we can get it resolved. Let me know if you figure anything out before then. I believe the Fly Sky is identical to the T9X, but perhaps there's a subtle firmware difference. Not 100% sure.
No problem, David. By upgrade firmware are you referring to er9x? I should have that loaded soon.
Cool. Let me know if you go with er9x. I have the SmartieParts board and plan on doing the upgrade soon, but want to get done with one of my builds first. When I'm working on this new build (QAV400) I'll make sure to look into the NAZA config since I'm going to pull it out of my TBS Discovery. Thanks for the feedback.
Markley, can you message me the link? I can't seem to find it by searching the diydrones site or Google. Thanks!
Thanks for the great tutorial. I'm using a Flysky TH9X which is the same as the Turnigy for some reason, these instructions don't seem to work. Adjusting the uprate and downrate doesn't have any effect on the PWM output on Channel 5. After much random fiddling around I found that I needed to set Aux Channel 6 to gear rather than Aux Channel 5 and then use THR in the mixes rather than GYR. I posted the detailed description over on DIYDrones on the Turnigy 9X page. Interested in your thoughts.
Thank you very much. That helped me setting up 6 flightmodes on my 9x :)
Trying desperately to get my flight modes set up, for starters my transmitter screen isn't like yours, first mine says pro(123) for the mix and it doesn't have a gyro option, I've been struggling these past couple weeks getting this setup, anyways you could help me out?
+JPOTT GAMING Interesting. Maybe you're using a different template? Check out this video where I talk a bit about it. ruclips.net/video/u5cyrLZzr3g/видео.html
+JPOTT GAMING Hi, I have the same issue on my Turnigy 9X were you able to figure it out. If so, how did you do it?
Can you explain why why hook the pwm wire to channel 6 but in the radio we set gear to CH5 instead of Ch6 ?
And here I was just about to wire in a six position rotary switch with a bunch of resistors in the place Pit Trim Aux 2..
*Sigh* I'll get the hang of it some day
I know what you mean. It's a constant battle to learn how to configure these transmitters! I'm still learning things every day. Good luck and I hope your setup goes well.
You skipped channel number 5 on receiver where as in aux channel you set it as channel number 5. Can you explain me why?
thank you very much dennis. this is the helpful video to make my final project
No problem at all.
Thanks Dennis, much appreciated, good kharma.
Sweet. Let me know how it goes and good luck.
Something is out of whack, my switches are not changing the on screen flight modes, just doesn't move when I'm cycling switches, any ideas Dennis?
+JPOTT GAMING My guess is that you need to make sure your switches are configured on the right channel so that mission planner can see them. If that's not the issue I would check your display monitor on the Turnigy 9X so that you can see the movement of the slider bars when you flip your switches. That will rule out any possible issue with the connection between your TX and aircraft. Good luck and keep us posted.
works with Flysky TH9X too thanks bro!
I can only get the pwm to go from 974-1480. Can't go over 1480 so i can only get 3 flyght modes.
Really appreciate your videos...super helpful for a beginner. Can you explain how the receiver aux ports work? My craft that I bought (it was a pervious DIY craft) has lights on it and im wondering if the aux is used to control that.
Brian Ballard Generally you can use the AUX ports to control a switch that will ultimately trigger those lights. Here are a couple of setup vids:
ruclips.net/video/2rLFNl8mFJ4/видео.html
ruclips.net/video/R8WXRVb6Y7g/видео.html
Good luck and keep us posted on your progress. If you have any future questions then please check out www.garagepilots.com and post in the forums.
i tried changing the values of dwnrate and up rate and cant see them changing..have i missed any step?
All endpoints are set at the default settings (100%). I tried moving the on and off gear endpoint settings to various extremes (0%, 100% and 100%, 0%). This had no effect on the ch 5 PWM setting in mission planner. It still reads a constant 1480 regardless of the endpoint settings.
hello How can we setup PPM 5 fly modes. I can not setup it with PPM connection and I can find any video can show like your video..that is simple but impossible do PPM code. Ail elevator and throttle are perfact but impossible when you connect PPM or sbus can you explain or show any helping link to me...best regards
Dennis,
Excellent, many thanks. Off to try it out now.
Nev
Hi. Hope you doing well. I have flysky ct6b transmitter. And mission planner show the channel 7 for controll the flight mode. I want change it in channel 5 as same seems in your video.
I am struggling to get this to work in acro mode. I am using a fs-tth9x with a frsky DJT module and a frsky D4R-II. Can't plug channel 6 from the receiver to channel 5 on the pixhawk. Only get two flight modes when I flip the gear switch and nothing happens when I flip the three position switch. When looking at the display on the radio it is working the right way. Pleas help
Wish I could help but I'm not familiar with this radio. On the Pixhawk you'll need to use SBUS and then you can configure your radio to send the proper signal over the channel used for flight modes. Now this assumes your RX supports SBUS but I just wanted to mention that. Other than that I'm sorry I can't be of much help. Good luck and let us know how you get along.
Hey dennis, whenever I put it into simple loiter mode if I touch the roll or pitch the copter gets a mind of its own and goes full throttle whichever direction I told it to. It be comes unresponseive in this state, so if I turn throttle all the way off to drop it out of the air it just keeps going full speed. Lucky I was below the tree line while testing this. I'm using APM 2.6 and a F450 with the E300.
Tom Norris Man that's strange and sorry to hear you're having troubles. I recommend making sure your barometer is covered and not impacted by light or wind from the props. If you bought the APM 2.6 in the case then this should be taken care of. If that's the case I would recommend visiting compass and accelerometer calibration. Good luck and let us know what you find out.
Thanks again for figuring out my dilemma on adding multiple flight modes. I noticed you are using a Frsky V8R7-II receiver instead of the stock Turnigy Rx. What is the benefit and do you recommend this Rx over the stock one. Does it work with the stock Turnigy transmitter or do you have to add a module? Where did you purchase it and how much $$$. Thanks again for the clarity of your instructions.
tptwk You have to get the FrSky module to work with that receiver. Generally you get better range as well as failsafe capabilities. Here is the module on HobbyKing:

Dennis Baldwin
Thanks again. I just completed setting up 6 flight modes in Mission planner thanks to your tutorial. Do you know how I can use the AIL D/R two position switch that is next to the 3 position switch instead of using the Gear switch. I have seen other videos of that set-up, but no one explains it like your video.
I followed everything you have going on her, and CANT get it to work in acro mode. I get the 3 pos sw to work in Heli mode, but the GEAR sw wont mix...advise? what am I forgetting...anything BEFORE the video that I dont see?
Edward Legg I'm not certain what's going on but maybe this will shed some light ruclips.net/video/u5cyrLZzr3g/видео.html
Good luck.
Hi Dennis your videos have been very helpful thanks! I've got the 6 flight modes working fine with the help of your video. I can't get the throttle cut failsafe working. I've too got the turnigy 9x default firmware with the frsky D8R II-PLUS. When i cut throttle my pwm for channel 5 goes from 1070 to 1676 changing my flight mode 1 to flight mode 6. And in my falisafe page nothing happens. My mottors cut off too. Please help if you can.
Wow, this worked for me. Thanks for your knowledge.
Cotie Jones Glad to hear it. Thanks for watching.
Couldn't be explained any better. Thank you.
Is there any reason to pick any mode other than Acro when flying multicopters? It seems the heli modes don't let you zero the controls using subtrim.
Thank you Thank you, it was about to drive me stupid, I knew there was away because I have seem it done before, you the man!!!!
Hi Dennis,
We are using a Turnigy 9X Trans/Receiver going into a Pixhawk PX4 with the PPM encoder. We are having trouble adjusting the PWM flight mode values. We don't see any changes in the PWM number as we flip through the switches on the transmitter. We have the aforementioned equipment hooked up exactly as Pixhawk recommends from receiever to the encoder to the PX4. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks!
Jordan
mchale20201 That's strange. I have this same setup for one of my wings and it works fine with the FrSky Taranis. I'm assuming you have the PPM encoded plugged into the 1st port (RC In)? I would recommend giong to the Radio Calibration screen in Mission Planner and make sure you have the proper channel setup to your whatever switch you're using. In the case of a multirotor make sure it's channel 5 and fixed wing is channel 8. Perhaps there's an issue with the standard receiver. If you look here it appears that all of the setups require a FrSky module.
Dennis Baldwin, thanks! Guide work perfect when switching my new Quanum Nova to the 9x and receiver. Question. Did I loose my channel 5 now that I set up the flight controls on channel 6 on the RX? I wanted to use the extra channel I got with the new RX to do autotune. Thanks again
Chris Haskins Hey that's a great question that I don't know the answer to. I should have check this when I did the setup. Duh! I'll see if I can revisit soon and find out. Let me know if you beat me to it :)
Thank you and your information resources so much!
Lion Silver No problem. Thanks for watching.
+dennis baldwin do you know if a decent video exist from for the initial set up, as far as the plugging of the devices? I am going to buy a kit from Hobby King but I am a little nervous about getting everything running.
Michael Niederander Not sure what kit you're going to buy so if you can share that we can take a look. Please post in the forums at www.garagepilots.com and we can have the discussion over there. I've found it's easier than trying to do it via RUclips comments. Thanks.
Great thank you for the video! Worked like a charm!
+jdb1930 No problem at all. Thanks and glad to hear you got it working.
Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! Thank you so much for this!!!! :)
Not a problem. I appreciate you watching!
I tried it both ways (ch 5 set to gear and then ch 6 set to gear) and got the results I posted 4 days ago.
No problem. What's your project? Anything exciting?
Are you using the frshy module on this radio? I can't get it to work on my radio with the flysky module and flysky 8 channel reciever. I got the 3 position in heli mode working but not the 6 in acro mode.
Ronnie Bruton Yes I'm using the FrSky module in this video. I'm not sure about the Flysky setup as I've never used it. Hopefully it's possible for you since I believe it runs the same stock firmware as the Turnigy9X. Sorry I can't be of more assistance.
Thank you so much for figuring this out and sharing it I got everything all set up just like you had on your video but the only problem for me is that when I switch between modes the quad copter just jumps all over the place in flight almost falling to the ground. Especially from loiter to stable mode. It seems as if it were taking too long to switch between modes and losing flight control... any ideas?
Im using FLYSKY th9x and APM 2.5
I've never experienced much of a lag when switching flight modes. If I come up with any ideas I'll let you know.
