Safety Third is a weekly show hosted by William Osman, NileRed, The Backyard Scientist, Allen Pan, Peter Sripol, and a couple other RUclips "Scientists". Sometimes we have guests, sometimes it's just us, but always: safety is our number three priority.
I got scammed for 40k on Runescape when I was 11. That was the best cybersecurity training I could have ever gotten
Nice name you have after that incident
I was like 15 when RS came out...and I fell for the "logout, change you pw to *InstantLevel20* or something equally as stupid and when you log back in you will have gained a ton of xp. I did, they took it. I are dumb. lol. BUT come on man, that was like 20+ years ago...way back.
Would n't it be a funny freaking co-inky-dink if Nigel was the little booger that scammed me? Stole my account, which I spent like a lot of game time building...grinding. I eventually got it back but all my stuff was gone. AND I had a crap ton of stuff....ain't gonna lie...I think I cried. lmao. god, I was dumb.

My entire high school was scammed once. The principal had a serious problem with finding an english teacher. Only after about 4 months, a woman with appropriate education and references appeared. For a month she was an exemplary teacher. At one point, she stated that the textbook we are using is outdated and she would like us to use another one that will give us more opportunities to develop the language. She said that she would collect money from us and buy appropriate textbooks for all groups, it was supposed to be about 1000 copies. And when she received money from almost all of the students, she vanished. When the principal started looking for her (at first we thought something had happened to her, maybe she had an accident), it turned out that no such person existed, all her papers were forged. We were all shocked, especially since these steps took her a long time, but the fact is that she earned quite well, back then it was about 10 times the teacher's monthly salary.
This could be a movie
damnn... thats actually very clever...
She was playing the long con
Back then sounds like you’re talking about 80s 90s, teachers made $30-$40,000 a year. So it sounds like she got away with 3 to $400,000. Was she ever caught?
@@garybenninger1544 It was 10 months salary, not ten years. Still a good haul for one month's work.

I feel like he's the type of guy to say yes to everything which is probably why lol

Nile thinks going 100MPH is not life endangering... let's all appreciate the time we have left with him.
160 kmh is average on german highways, people actually quite regularly drive 200+ (124mph). You can probably drive up to 250 before people think you are weird
Nile probably understands his limits driving than other people on the road understand how to even drive safely.
@50_foot_punch99 it's not jist about how you drive. It's how others drive as well. Also, everyone thinks they are the best driver nut jist look at how people drive. Thats clearly not true.
@@mola1.980 In Canada its the same, on some highways its very normal to be going 160km/h. Coquihalla for example, speedlimit is like 120 but people go well above all the time and are usually fine. It all depends on road conditions.

The runescape talk is unreal I love it hahaha, a good topic would be the Venezuelans literally making their living and feeding their families by playing Old School Runescape.
Or the time a group of runescape gold farmers got killed (IIRC) in Venezuela because the people after them thought they had real life gold.

Can’t wait to see the next video he releases on his channel.
Taxation will never stop being theft.
If you have a platform, a tweet publicly criticizing the service from a company can do more change than yelling at the workers.
It draws attention to the awful service and holds the company more publicly accountable than just talking to their customer service would.
There’s so many places where the managers know that people are unsatisfied with the service and that customers lose it on their workers every day, yet changes are not made because management does not care.
Almost got scammed as a child and got laughed at when I exclaimed: “Mom, Mom! We won a free disney cruise!! I need your card!”
here at 69, didn't want to like and change it.
"Old people suck"
*proceeds to give the most boomer takes*
I had the opposite happen when I started an LLC. Because my info was public, I started getting tons of junk mail and thought I was getting fake letters from the IRS telling me to pay them money. I wrote it off as a scam, but ended up with about 10 letters that got progressively angrier. I misread when you had to pay your business tax and thought you had to pay it during the regular tax season, so I did in fact miss the payment. Oopsie.
I had a relationship where my gf magic markered the positive result on a pregnancy test to convince me to drive back from out of state and spend New Years with her instead of my relatives. It was mildly traumatic when I found out.
At my old job, getting yelled at would not make me go to the manager, they didn't care and would not do anything, if they even could. Even common sense changes were rarely made, because everything had to go higher and higher up. I had no power as an employee and yelling at me wouldn't give me the power. Especially when the whole structure is based on turn over
i swear this is definitely one of will's worst takes
I chatted with a bank teller once who told me all changes had to go up 7 levels of management minimum. So nothing ever changed because the odds that nobody will veto the change are basically zero.
As someone who worked in IT phone support meat shield land, yes we know that the system is stupid but no one will change anything to fix it. They just ignore the problem until everything breaks and then suddenly it's important now.
Every time I see Bernard at the beginning of a podcast it makes me so happy!!
Okay. So, I'm the caretaker for an elderly lady, and have been for about 7 years now. Maybe 3-4 years ago, she entered into the official publishers clearinghouse sweepstake, which is 100% a thing. Unfortunately, about two weeks later she got a phone call saying that she had won it, and the prize was 5 million bucks. I don't know all of the details, but basically I arrived at her house one day, and she had this giddy energy and clearly wanted to say something, but was trying to hold it back. Eventually, I just asked her what was going on and she was pretty cagey about it for a few minutes, but eventually she told me about the call, and how she was poised to win a huge amount of money, but that the people from PCH had told her not to tell anyone about it at all - literally NO ONE. That immediately raised huge red flags for me, and we waited for them to call her back, and when they did, it was clearly some dude in a call center trying to scam, I informed him that the jig was up, and it was. But if you don't know what the red flags are, it's easy to ignore them like my boss did.
I'm assuming William didn't update his physical copy of the bioshock collection for switch. This episode was hilarious Safety Third has now become my favorite podcast.
I think older people are scammed easier because of how/when they grew up. Back in their day, they just trusted people. Took people at their word. They take things at face value. So scammers take advantage of that.
Which is exactly how door to door salesmen and con artists could float through town and make bank.
@@johnsmith8988 exactly. It's really very sad.
Also, online scams are much easier to set up for old people since they're not as familiar with how internet actually works
Nah bro it’s bc they didn’t grow up with all the tech so when they have to go from e-mail to email, website login to phone messages, etc. They lose track of it all and instead of trying to figure it out it’s just be easier to go along. There’s no way someone that’s older and not very technologically inclined will figure out a scam just by cross referencing.
@@Eduardo-ji1eh it doesn't need to be exclusively one or the other

it's ok, Dr. Bernard's ready to turn the fleas thing into content once it goes wrong
You think Florida man doesn't know that??😂
How does one be small?
Regarding the microwaves: In Europe earlier this year, there was this problem where a certain companies smart microwaves accidentally got an update for steam ovens, which bricked the microwaves and their internet connection so service technicians had to go into the field armed with a usb stick to fix hundereds of microwaves. Oh and ofcourse, once you connected it to your phone via the internet, you couldn't opt out of the updates
smart appliances are for dumb people
Why does a microwave need wifi?
@@Ran_Do why does it need an update?
That's why I do everything possible to never "update" anything that already works.
@@JD2jr. Software is cheap and their production allows for mistakes so it's cheaper to sell you a half-baked microwave, almost like the 'early access' model. You should still update your devices due to security vulnerabilities, at least your home router. Hackers love to exploit these things.
Every time I listen to this podcast, I am reassured that this is, in fact, the best podcast I listen to. Despite having the lowest view count. It is such a shame. I'm considering praying again because I never want this to end.

When I worked customer service I would be more helpful to the people that were nice about there complains. Most companies will not change a broken system just because the employee gets yelled at all the time. Big corporations are just crooked.
That’s an asshole move to treat people differently at your job.
I just recently quit a retail job where the managers were ALWAYS on our ass for not getting the phone numbers. I also happened to quit during a huge flux of other employees leaving because we were understaffed, customers were upset at us that we were understaffed, and upper management did nothing about it
As someone whose main email starts with deez nuts, 1:31:32 hits uncomfortably close to home for me. I had to explain to the IRS person over video call to verify my email that I made it when I was 12 and she was trying her hardest not to crack up.
Too lazy to change it tho

@@alegsb3943 lol fair
I'm the exact opposite. Got a cum guzzler 420 email right after this podcast and whenever stores ask for my email ever again, I'll only give them this email
Best approach I've found to "get through" to big companies who are being jerks is to talk straight to the "unsubscribe" team. They have to report to management as to why customers leave, and are employed to keep customers. In the internet example, if customer support couldn't turn it on again because it was "against policy", my approach would be to ask to speak to someone to cancel the account, state the name of a competitor that I intend to move to (bluffing or not), and my reason for cancelling, describing the situation. More often than not they'll talk to their supervisors who will scramble to not have to report another customer loss.
Yup, social engineer the numbers game in your favor if the only thing the corporation cares about is the bottom line.
Yup my aunt did that trick to our current internet provider, got an amazing phone+internet plan from that lmao
I remember one day when I was living in an apartment building, our internet just suddenly went out one evening. We called them and the company claimed that they “were shutting off service in another suite, and accidentally shut yours off instead”
They were able to do that without ever setting foot in our suite, but they claimed they needed to schedule a technician days later in order to fix it.
This reminds me of the time I shut off a dedicated server over SSH and couldn’t start it back up. Turns out the colocation provider had instructions I ignored. Oops. Had to wait until next business hours the next day.
My aunt fell for a gift card scam. She was stopped by a cashier who recognized what was going on. She's only in her mid 70s and a smart woman. I was shocked when I found out
This is one of the best shows out right now.
It’s amazing how easy it can be to persuade people through their emotions.
Also, I’m all for Will doing a speed of cringe video. Measuring caretakers cringe speed would be hilarious 😂😂
What's amazing is that the topic sounds scattered but the theme is intact at all times.
There's a famous phone scam here where I live where they would call up your residence and claim that you have gotten into an accident and need to send them money or jewelry for your boss'/spouse's/parent's medical treatment, then seal the deal by somehow replicating your voice albeit in a bloodied state. Everyone thinks only dumb people fall for it, but the reality is unless you're on guard for it with every phone call it's easy to fall for it. My cousin lost around USD800 converted because she thought I was in trouble, and even exclaimed that the voice sounded so real there was no way it was faked. We never got that back.
Yeah the AI voice stuff is getting really good. It's scary.
1:14:43 - Will: "How could you go 105mph on a 55mph road".
North American street design enforces speed limits basically only through signage. There tends to be little effort put into road design to actually matching the layout of the road (i.e width, peripherals like trees, etc...) that would encourage someone to actually follow the speed limit.
every time someone says something that draws my attention back to this video, bernard has such a great expression to match how im feeling. it's like making eye contact with another bystander while someone's causing a scene in public. 10/10
Nigel the type of guy to bluescreen his microwave.
And when he is explaining how he did it "So i got Uranium..."
1:40 unironicly I think of growing up as acquiring data far too often
"Acquiring data" is such a wild descriptor for growing up. The fact that Will called it out had me losing my shit. But it honestly makes sense too, lol
I love how Nigel's timeline of him playing Fortnite was changing second to second.
“That’s when you kidnap” followed by the loudest silence 😂
My wife fell for a Apple phishing email, but I caught her as she was logging into the fake website. I had her immediately change her password and no issues so far.
Good thing you noticed it!
when i worked in the hourly wage jobs and a customer would complain to me about something i truly could not change I would tell them i had already complained to the company and they wouldnt make a change unless a customer made the complaint and that would get them to leave me alone
William: You give the police officer the vehicle's insurance. So if I am driving my friend's car and I get pulled over, when I get asked for insurance they are asking for that vehicle's insurance so it'll be a paper that has my friend's name on it.

no love for bernard?
@@TehMuNjA (and Bernard) because he's now a permanent co-host 🤣
Ive found that if you just answer the call but dont say hello and remain silent they will just hangup and it definitely slows them down. Also ive had my police scanner in the background go off a few times and they hang up soon as they hear it too.
i was a telemarketer and regularly had peers that would brag about how a call didn't get escalated to management because they'd lie and say they were management -- and yes you could get fired if you made your managers life inconvenient
I've been hearing the podcasts on Spotify so I don't know if it's a common occurrence, but I find it very clever and hilarious how Nile's cup is basically just a chemistry flask with a handle lol.
The discussion on the stalker pained me dearly. I basically immediately understood what was going on, because i'm a person like that. I've learned this particular social cue (through experience, unfortunately), but Will's description about how you can extended the positive feelings forever and not realize that the other party doesn't have reason to talk to you anymore cuts pretty deep. Now i just accept the bleak reality that the people i care about don't care about me because i've given them precious little reason to.
I needed a new episode to listen to while making dinner! I love the nerdy banter, it reminds me of my engineering degree days.
William does not understand that people in customer service are so sick of dealing with shit customers that wanna vent that they will go out of their way to help nice customers as much as they can so that they don't have to deal with a shitty one. Being nice to people on the phone will vastly increase the odds of getting what you wat and the person helping you can help you instead of getting yelled at by someone else. It's people like you that make us want to be more helpful to nice people.
Sincerely - a customer service worker

I feel like the speed of cringe is one of those 'if a tree falls in a forest' thing; it's got to be observed for the cringe to initiate, and after observation it's the space it takes for the observers face to twist into horror or regret.
Now that you mention it we really need Technology Connections on this podcast.
" HE DID NOT TALK ABOUT TAXES EXPLICITY , HE - HE MERELY TALKED ABOUT THE AGENCY "
The hot vs cold thing makes sense. You don't go out when it's cold AF. The more people interact the higher chance of crime.
Additionally more police will want to patrol when the weather is nice.
I'm loving how these episodes are getting longer and longer... Just so damn wholesome
Down here in Florida we have what's called "The Sunshine Law". All police records are publicly available. The only restriction is naming minors.

@@BillPickle exactly.
@@BillPickle yes, same reason you hear so many bad statistics from USA. Because we actually get and show real data where other countries absolutely will not. So much about US slavery bc other countries simply suppress their negative past.
I once got a phone call claiming my mother was being held for ransom, I just laughed at them and hung up. It was like give me good news will you? thank you
Reminds me of when this wimpass blowhard tried to act tough by pulling a knife on me while I was drunk. Trying to act all tough for his buddies.
I just couldn't help myself and seriously thought it was a joke at first. So I immediately laughed in his face, slapped his shoulder (nearly knocking him over) and said "nice try, but if you wanna impress me [I didn't even think to mention getting scared], think of something better next time, like something you might actually do" and when he didn't reply I just wobbled off.
Only then did his dissapointed expression click for me and I felt so bad for him when I heard his buddies laugh at him I went back and gave him a hug.
Man, those guys were entertaining to come across. They honestly didn't register that they just radiated bluff and nobody could take them seriously.
Will's annoyance at the unnecessary precision in microwaves is super understandable, but at the same time I know that a day old donut heated for 8 seconds in my microwave is perfect, but 10 seconds turns it into an inedible nightmare of steam and melted sugar that could strip paint off a car.
I approach this is what is probably a stupid way.. I never want to hear the end sound so I always stop it early. I also only hit one button so the time is always 111 333 3333, etc, and I just open it when I think it's done..

I have a very unique view on this. It isn't exactly the same, but I grew up in a Navy family. My Father was a Navy Chief for over 20 years. My mother for 3 years I think until they had their first child. I'm the youngest. I don't think my father is a bad person or anything. He would never EVER lay hands on us or anything, but he was sort of like stereotypical strict parent but times 100. He spent nearly half his life (at the time) bossing people around in the Navy with the mindset of "Get it done right or face the consequences" so inevitably that mindset would leak into the way he raised us. The reason I mention this is because he is one of those people who just can't apologize or accept when he is wrong. For example: I remember him always yelling at me to clean my room (And to be fair, I deserved it) and one time I was going through and cleaning up. Obviously I'm going to be making noise when cleaning. He punched my door and came in saying "What the FK is going on in here" scared the crap out of me. Then he looked at my dirty room and started to yell at me about how the room was dirty and I said "I am literally cleaning my room right now." and he just sort of stood there and stared at me for a few seconds because he couldn't find anything wrong with what I was doing. He never apologized or admitted he was wrong. He just left. I don't think I've ever heard those two words "I'm sorry" come out of his mouth a single time in my entire life.
Memorize the Zhong Xina bing chilling meme for when you get a spam call, and recite it to confuse the hell out of the caller lol

On the topic of microwaves: A really cool technology is a turning radiation source instead of having a turntable. We have one of these and it just heats everything much more evenly and also it's no big deal if you spill something because the bottom of the chamber is just a metal pan, no mechanics so it's easier to clean. If you are looking into buying a new microwave and you have a few bucks to spare I would highly recommend you get this.
It’s because you’re famous so since they think they know you they feel like they can get some validity from your friendship.
"it's the same person who takes a picture in their car with sunglasses on" this was brilliant

My dad one time got pulled over by a cop in a neighbor state, this happened in a neighbor state.
He got pulled over for exceeding the speed limit, but after talking to my dad and realizing that we had just come from out of state to visit family, he let him go because he "wasn' familiar with the area".
What my dad didn't tell him was that we would always drive through this area to get to our family. But I feel like if the officer had thought about it a bit, he would have understood that we probably did go through the area regularly if we also visited family there regularly.
But it was just very cool that he let us go because we were out of state, even though we were ten more minutes from family and we always visited them.
My one-year-old microwave has two dials. Power level and time. No start button. No clock. Just cook.
Waaaay better show than last time, better flow, less interruptions, people were able to finish their topics, somewhat. I left a comment on the last show so now i'm balancing it out with this comment
The Microwave you're talking about with 2 dials is the one I grew up with in my grandma's house. It was really awesome, you should get one!

On my microwave hitting the start button adds 30 seconds to the timer and turns it on, you can then keep pressing it to add 30 more second for each press, I almost never use any other button on the microwave.
This is what I do too. Not that I actually need this level of efficiency, but in my mind it’s the most efficient because the cooking has already begun before I finish the input.

Like cell phones, the reason old people have trouble with them is they know how old phones work. But a cell phone works differently. It's like putting new instructions after the old ones. You first have to look past the first one to get to the next instructions.
