Vanilla doom monsters are kind of unfitting for the SH atmosphere. Enemies have to look and sound unsettling, grotesque and repulsive, that even looking at them will hurt you. Their movement must be also erratic and and disturbing, something must feel off-putting and nauseating about their animation, for much more significant effect that some truly unholy abomination is inevitably approaching you.
YV, your analysis is just as strong as your taste for money. I hope that if the creator decides to create a longer version of this that they do new spritework for the enemies.
This is the one thing I fucking hate about most doom mods, they dont redo the monsters ever for some reason, i guess its either out of laziness or the fact that they dont want to mess with the "immortal doom gameplay"
Oh man. This legitimately looks like a PS1 game, and I mean that in the best possible way. I wish more indie games, mods, and lower budget games would use that era's aesthetic. So much nostalgia for me :D Thanks for showing us this!
There's a game called "OKNORMAL" that's like an LSD Dream Emulator type deal that uses the aesthetic hard. Even down to the low resolution look. Really surreal and psychedelic though. It's made by that guy that makes all of the trailers of modern games if they were released for the PS1.
I'm getting a nice, warm mid 90s fuzzy feeling from this mod. It reminds me a lot of Quake, ancient rules that shouldn't be broken, warm browns and yellows, good times.
Unloved gave me the creeps with the lighting turned down in options, if your only way to navigate is through organic lighting cast by artifacts, that makes gameplay MUCH more tense, even for being regular Doom enemies plotting the landscape.
Came across a weird bug that 'breaks' the flashlight. The flashlight doesn't just cast out a light, it literally turns sector brightness on or off. Hopefully that'll be a bug that gets fixed, whatever version Icarus is playing is not the same experience I'm getting on my end.
There's actually a frig ton of ammo and health in Silent Hill 1, but the vague health system, and hard to hit flying enemies drain it a lot faster. The lowest health drinks actually heal 70% but most players use it for lighter wounds since it's not a known thing. A lot of the limited resources were brought largely due to the player's own paranoia. A more vague biorhythm health system would help with that a bit.
Okay, so apparently this was made for the Vinesauce Joel Doom Mapping Contest 2: Hellectric Boogaloo, and the Tim Allen Pictures are an Hommage to the Creator's first entry into the contest.
I used to be annoyed by how the media were all about bringing back shit things that my parents liked when they were young. Now though, I'm getting Doom mods in 2018. They are making a new FPS in the Build engine. ASCII roguelikes are thriving as a subgenre...It's been good. Don't give a shit about Top Gun 2, though. Whatever.
I played the shit out of it, tested this map and gave feedback to the creator. I even speedrunned this map in a video that I did not long ago and I still think that I can do it even faster. I really like this map and I have high hopes that the full version of this TC will be quite a behemoth. There are quite a lot of references but...I won't give you spoilers. Enjoy this freaking map...
Actually I'm currently trying to play through the first Silent Hill and I have to say, I didn't exactly have a problem with supplies in that game either. They might seem sparse at first, but they seem to be very plentiful if you can plan ahead right. Or maybe that's just me getting lucky with the timing during the combat which allows me to save goods for later.
Yeah, its in hud options, but it's like 3rd time he is pointing out that hud is too small and no one never told him that there is option to scale it up.
But the real question is how does it compare to Unloved cause that mod was totally Silent Hill also... just with huge massive hordes that ruined the mood at parts.
I disagree with your view on the amount of supplies. I had so many pistol bullets at the end of Silent Hill 2 that I killed the two Pyramid Heads at the head entirely with my pistol. It did take forever though, lol.
Yeah i just finished it, Really felt in line with that silent hill 1 feel but much better with the more responsive FPS controls. I wasn't the biggest fan of the filter over everything but i get that's part of the feel he was going for and in a few parts I could see how it made the style pop more. I'd love for this to be turned into a full game with a open large town to explore, I could see myself throwing 10$ on steam for a full game of this.
Downloaded the mod after watching this video, and holy hell I was blown away. I did get a laugh out of the final boss being an Archvile because I know how much Icarus hates them.
to be fair to soundless mound, if you were good with ammo in Silent hill, IE using the melee for the first long while in the early game, and didn't whiff your shots, then you'd have plenty, plenty of ammo in the second half. as in, way more than you would need or even really want to use.
I just love this kind of gameplay! (BTW, I'm not sure if you only review newer mods, but I'd like to suggest Gene Tech, Legacy of Suffering, Cursed Maze and Final NeoDoom as Doom mods to play!)
Hm, this kinda looks interesting, gonna have to wait for it to be finished/if it's finished it to try it out. Btw, Silent Hill 1-3 mentioned only as having an excellent atmosphere? B-but Silent Hill 4 is the best of the series! I don't get the hate/snubbing that game gets; it's got a fantastic oppressively disturbing and claustrophobic atmosphere, the plot is great, and they kind of tried something new with the series. Also the sound and music is top notch.
They really need to work on the monster design cause I kinda takes me out of the experience when I suddenly just see a colour swapped imp making SH2 sounds. Also I feel they rely too much on the original SH2 Sound effects way too much. I mean using a few here and there as a homage is okay but those effects are intrinsically linked to the monsters that make them and so it really doesn’t work. I dunno it’s really cool but it needs a bit more original assets to sorta set itself apart from the original cause if I wanted to play a silent hill game then I would do that and not waste time playing a mod which is only an a attempt at semi recreating that experience. I don’t wanna come off as too harsh and I understand it’s not fully finished but those are the problems I have with it at the very least.
Icarus: will you revisit this if there is an update (ie 2.0)? Like others have stated, it would be interesting to see other sprite monsters used (maybe pre-made monsters from other DOOMish games?), and maybe up their hit points a bit. Imagine instead of the Baron it's a modified Spider Mastermind (to look like an actual giant spider, but with the Baron's hit points and no hit scan or projectile weapons, just melee).
It seems it has the same problem as silent hill 2 with the bullets and medkits. By the half way game you have too many of those that its not a problem anymore.
Yeah that's right, I don't hate this mod but I don't think the Doom engine is good for a horror mod (I think the Source or goldsrc engine were better suited for horror)
Who's never seen or heard of Silent Hill? By this day and age it's common knowledge like the Bible. Also, where's pyramid head? Can't have a Silent Hill game w/o Mr. Pyramid and his giant anime sword.
hey now, i know of plenty of 20 somethings at my college who done even know who Yoda is or what hes from, much less silent hill. though i would doubt they would ever find their way to this channel.
I just downloaded the mod and am enjoying it so far...until I found a picture of Tim Allen as an Easter egg in one of the apartments. Completely ruined it for me, trashed the atmosphere. -100/10.
XD!! The dog ending you have to unlock, this is just kinda there in the background. lol I've been playing it so far and I think I came across a softlock, how do you get through the wall in the basement, or unlock the door to the 3rd floor?
Ugh, find a better Silent Hill pun. "Soundless mound"? Silent Hill sounds like the name of a location. Soundless mound sounds like a pile of shit mod that literally has no sounds.
Dmlaney those games played completely differently though so you can' t compare. Its like comparing Pokemon to Chrono Trigger, yeah they are both RPGs but have a different gameplay system.
I imagine the monsters are just place holders used for the demo but honestly I reckon the enemies could absolutely do with original designs or ones built off the vanilla monsters to look horrific and terrifying. They just don't fit with the Silent Hill aesthetic the modder is going for.
"some truly unholy abomination"
Two eyed cacodemon from Pirate Doom
like the enemies from Afraid of Monsters!
YV, your analysis is just as strong as your taste for money. I hope that if the creator decides to create a longer version of this that they do new spritework for the enemies.
Marisa Kirisame you're the creator of the mod?
This is the one thing I fucking hate about most doom mods, they dont redo the monsters ever for some reason, i guess its either out of laziness or the fact that they dont want to mess with the "immortal doom gameplay"

It's made by that guy that makes all of the trailers of modern games if they were released for the PS1.
And now "PS1-style" is a horror subgenre. I love it!
Every game should have a Doom engine homage or port.
Command & Conquer got already:
All Out War 2 :)
Why is there no Daikatana Doom? That'd be hilarious.
Thank you for showing this gem.
Played it myself and loved it!
Zombie demons?!
We went too far.
umbaupause there is a point where this has to stop. And we already passed it. SO LETS KEEP GOING! :D
And then john was a zombie
Nah man, Zombie Demon Ghosts are the bees knees
Silent hill also had abundance of resources. It was Resident evil that restricted your resources.
Yeah. It was kinda funny how the caracter(s) could carry lots of portable TVs, and other heavy throwable things.
This reminds me more of cry of fear actually
I've enjoyed all of these DMM videos so far - but this one gets me excited. I'll take any chance I can to get my classic Silent Hill fix!

Loving it, keep up the good work!
I only played doom like twice, but I really like this channel.
I don't know why, but i love the graphics for the world. For when you are in the house/apartment place
Okay, so apparently this was made for the Vinesauce Joel Doom Mapping Contest 2: Hellectric Boogaloo, and the Tim Allen Pictures are an Hommage to the Creator's first entry into the contest.
I was going to mention that
I think they'll continue making Doom mods till I'm old and rusty... nice!
Mal Cors What's your profile pic? Sorry if I've already asked...
Don't think you have. It's from Shining Force III.
Whatever.
@@EuryBartleby there's also Dusk if you were ever a Quake type of person.
I played the shit out of it, tested this map and gave feedback to the creator. I even speedrunned this map in a video that I did not long ago and I still think that I can do it even faster. Damn, I need to learn how to script entering doors like that. I love that style of 'teleporting' through a door instead of opening it.
As SIlent Hill fan games go, this is one of the best ones made.
Silent Hill 2 in Doom? Thats like the best thing ever. Looks like it has a lot to improve, but I really like the concept.
Love the way the camera shakes as the Hell Baron walks towards you. Definitely makes him more threatening.
as usual, masterfully narated
Wow I'm dumb. I didn't get it until Icarus spelled it out. The shame, SHAME!
This is clickbait, there's sound in this mod
They were supposed to use Silent Hill but they might get copyrighted.
0:24 "It won`t budge" RIGHT AWAY i know it silent hill, only there was this kind of message when you can`t open the door.
Gotta try this one for sure.
I'd like a Doomguy visits Silent Hill spinoff.
I love that the item pickup sound effect is ripped straight from Silent Hill.
looks exactly like Dementium: The Ward
Played only the second on on the ds.
Had some great soundtracks.
It took a good half a minute between looking at the thumbnail and the video starting to get the title of the mod
Wasn’t this made for the Vargskelethor Doom competition?
Yes
This looks great actually!
Looks impressive
has it got the siren though?
PLEASE DO TEXT TO DOOM
Exactly, even if it's a mini mod madness
Was anyone able to figure out what bindings to use as I couldn't take out the knife when I tried to mess with it?
Actually I'm currently trying to play through the first Silent Hill and I have to say, I didn't exactly have a problem with supplies in that game either. They might seem sparse at first, but they seem to be very plentiful if you can plan ahead right. Or maybe that's just me getting lucky with the timing during the combat which allows me to save goods for later.
Soundless boundless moundless houndless
house.
I already like this mod. I've played one of the silent hills game, i believe on ps2, and I loved it. Going to try this mod out.
2:55 isn't there like hud scaling option available.
Yeah, its in hud options, but it's like 3rd time he is pointing out that hud is too small and no one never told him that there is option to scale it up.
There is, in GZdoom 2.2 or newer it is a regular option in the menus. There might be a console command or config line that does it in older versions
if I knew this was based on silent hill I would have watched this video much sooner
But the real question is how does it compare to Unloved cause that mod was totally Silent Hill also... just with huge massive hordes that ruined the mood at parts.
I know this is a long time coming, but what is the name of the song you play at the end of your videos?
Can you do a livestream of solace dreams?
I disagree with your view on the amount of supplies. I had so many pistol bullets at the end of Silent Hill 2 that I killed the two Pyramid Heads at the head entirely with my pistol. It did take forever though, lol.
Silent hill mod wow🙂 i have download pk7 now how to run it which Zandronum version i need
i need help i use the latest gzdoom and the while lodaing the file its just gots an error with some map thing and stops can someone help?
Oh no that sound from SCP Containment Breach
Does this support co-op?
This looks amazing! Sign me up!
Someone do a mod for Realms of the Haunting but with a proper story.
Sorry Regions of the Spooky
I take it this is a little short map? I love the idea and would love to see something full game length with this.
It is a full "episode" on a quite massive map with key hunting, puzzles and final boss.
The ammo was like that in the original, if you played smart you would end up with alot by the later stages
Tried to download, it kept opening new pages with litteraly nothing on them, anyone else??
Downloaded the mod after watching this video, and holy hell I was blown away. I did get a laugh out of the final boss being an Archvile because I know how much Icarus hates them.
The inven-tree? Never heard of that species before. Where does it normally grow?
:p
Hello, do you have any guides or any recommendations on running mods and maps. It seems a little fiddly sometimes
Grezzo 2 review when?
to be fair to soundless mound, if you were good with ammo in Silent hill, IE using the melee for the first long while in the early game, and didn't whiff your shots, then you'd have plenty, plenty of ammo in the second half. as in, way more than you would need or even really want to use.

(BTW, I'm not sure if you only review newer mods, but I'd like to suggest Gene Tech, Legacy of Suffering, Cursed Maze and Final NeoDoom as Doom mods to play!)
Have you seen the new Doom Trailer, your friend is back :)
Loudn't High Ground
Silent Doom.
Oh yeah! I never got around to playing this one! My computer at the time, was uh... not good. >.>
Hm, this kinda looks interesting, gonna have to wait for it to be finished/if it's finished it to try it out.

Also the sound and music is top notch.
Snordix the story is not as well written as sh2 or sh3
The story was one of its best aspects, it was the gameplay that took 2 bullets to the kneecaps.
Play the nameless mod for deus ex.
It's OK
They really need to work on the monster design cause I kinda takes me out of the experience when I suddenly just see a colour swapped imp making SH2 sounds.

This mod is actually interesting, yet the monsters do not fit..... hoping later in the development they add custom monsters to fit the atmosphere
Icarus: will you revisit this if there is an update (ie 2.0)? Like others have stated, it would be interesting to see other sprite monsters used (maybe pre-made monsters from other DOOMish games?), and maybe up their hit points a bit.

It took me 54 minutes to finish this and it managed to unnerve and scare me more than the entirety of silent hill 2
It seems it has the same problem as silent hill 2 with the bullets and medkits. By the half way game you have too many of those that its not a problem anymore.
Amazing review.
A GREAT pk3 to try is Doom zone, very fun.
Wish someone would do something like this but emulating RE4.
Periphery Fan?
I want to replay Silent Hill now
I thought the title meant this entire mod is mute, that would've been kinda boring
This is not oki doki
Sweet!
Please do nun with a gun, femdoom, and speed demon for doom mod madness
what is the intro music?
Another non Doom mod?
Lol it's a doom mod, he even says so
+windhvit
I guess they mean that it's a mod that doesn't follow the DooM formula at all(i.e. is not about shooting stuff quick and near-mindlessly).
Yeah that's right, I don't hate this mod but I don't think the Doom engine is good for a horror mod (I think the Source or goldsrc engine were better suited for horror)
dear anyone who has never ever ever played a silent hill game.
GO PLAY SILENT HILL 2 NOW!
ps, still hoping for necrodoom mod video
Why would someone hold a crowbar backward like that??
More likely to get as much blunt impact as possible. Less likely to get stuck in the enemy you're attacking.
Mod is ruined by the lack of original enemies. Recycling old doom friends kills the impact.
huh
uhu
Who else found this from Vargskelethor
They could've called it Mute Mountain, which I think sounds hilarious.
Has anyone ever told you that the beginning of your intro sounds like a wet fart? :P
Who's never seen or heard of Silent Hill? By this day and age it's common knowledge like the Bible. Also, where's pyramid head? Can't have a Silent Hill game w/o Mr. Pyramid and his giant anime sword.
of course you can - just look at sh1 and sh3. you can't have pyramid head without james.
or are you one of the plebs who liked homecoming?
A Scissorman of Orqwith You are right, PH symbolizes James' desire to be punished for his sins.
Hoping the pyramid head is hunting down some KONAMI executives because fuck em.
TheRexTera Silent Hills...
hey now, i know of plenty of 20 somethings at my college who done even know who Yoda is or what hes from, much less silent hill. though i would doubt they would ever find their way to this channel.
I just downloaded the mod and am enjoying it so far...until I found a picture of Tim Allen as an Easter egg in one of the apartments. Completely ruined it for me, trashed the atmosphere. -100/10.
I'm guessing you don't know about the Dog ending in Silent Hill 2 huh?
XD!! The dog ending you have to unlock, this is just kinda there in the background. lol
I've been playing it so far and I think I came across a softlock, how do you get through the wall in the basement, or unlock the door to the 3rd floor?
Ugh, find a better Silent Hill pun. "Soundless mound"?
Silent Hill sounds like the name of a location.
Soundless mound sounds like a pile of shit mod that literally has no sounds.
Well what else could they use they can't just use "Silent hill" cause of copyright reasons I guess but im no expert at naming something original.
Haha, yes.
I misread the title as "Soundless Mod" the first time around.
Lighten up, it's tongue-in-cheek.
Resident Evil was so much better than Silent Hill
Different genres and game-plays. Can't compare the two.
They are literally both the same genre called survival horror.
Dmlaney those games played completely differently though so you can' t compare. Its like comparing Pokemon to Chrono Trigger, yeah they are both RPGs but have a different gameplay system.
got this fucking woke ass anti antifa ad before the video says alot about our society gang weeders rise up
i don't see the point in this, i would rather play silent hill, let doom be doom
I imagine the monsters are just place holders used for the demo but honestly I reckon the enemies could absolutely do with original designs or ones built off the vanilla monsters to look horrific and terrifying. They just don't fit with the Silent Hill aesthetic the modder is going for.
