I suffered for 3 years with severe pain and loss of instant mobility. I was afraid of back surgery but had no choice. The pain took over my life. in 2011, I had my L5-S1 fused along with a disc implant. Just like in the video. Although, to minimize scar tissue in my back, my surgeon went thru the front and the incision was done on lower abdomen. I was walking a climbing stairs within 2 days. NO back or sciatic pains at all. After several months, to be safe, I was golfing and doing light jogging. Thankful for the procedure, my surgeons, and modern medicine. I got my life back.

@@poky1 When I woke up from recovery and the anesthesia wore off, the pain in the back was gone! At that point I smiled at my wife and said I haven't felt this good in years. We were ecstatic. They kept me for 2 full days to ensure there was no infection or issues and for me to start the therapy.
After the 1st night, I was getting out of bed on my own and walking to the bathroom. And therapy started. Which I passed with no problem. The only pain I had was in my lower stomach from where the incision was made.
Good luck to you. It's a breeze. Let me know how it goes.

On October 21st this year I had my entire lumber spine fused. I'm 8 weeks out now and have zero pain, other than pulled muscles from PT. I saw the surgeon yesterday and , after looking at some new x-rays, I can start a return to normal which should include skiing in early spring.
I'm 67 and had 5 surgeries prior to this starting in 1998. I'm super happy and hope that this one is the end. Fingers crossed!

Had spinal fusion back in the 80s no metal just bone taken from my hip, best thing i ever did, went from 275 to 145 pounds and became a triathlete riding 100 miles a day and oceanwater swimming 🏊‍♂️ 5 miles. Do it, painkillers and depression are a downward spiral that not many survive. 🙏👍✌

I believe you have metal. That holds things in place until the true fusion occurs when the harvested bone forms a solid bond. The bone from your hip is ground up and mixed with some shit to help it grow. It is placed around the vertebrae and in time will become a solid bony connection.

I'm able to lift again and my left leg works better. I'm also guessing the worse off didn't try to modify their own body mechanics. You do have to rehab right and listen to the experts.

I'm not a professional, but i consider myself educated on back pain. I have had C6/7 fusion, as the disc was totally destroyed, my entire left arm went numb, and my bicep/tricep/pectoral muscles all atrophied to waste. That surgery has helped me tremendously, but it was a last resort only after the disc completely started pressing on the nerve. I have 6 other herniated discs, degeneration & severe stenosis. My lumbar discs are really bad, and ive been a "candidate" for surgery for years. I have successfully avoided surgery, and my pain is now quite .manageable. I eat healthy, i exercise,im 52 with a 30 inch wasteline, i use an inverted bench, a spinal decompression bench, hot epsom salt baths, and a heating pad. For pain, i take Kratom and turmeric/bosweillia.I still go through periods of pain that feels like an icepick in my back, numbness/tingling down my leg, and my sciatic nerve twitching and feeling like a hot rubber band in my butt cheek. But its manageable now. Maybe it will help others, im not sure. Definitely helped me. Good luck all my pain companions!

My Dr. Did the normal fusion procedure rods/ lag screws /brackets and smaller bolts/screws
Which keeps the spine from moving in those areas and does not move .
Why hasn't someone invented engineered a fusion that keeps the damaged vertebrae intact but still allows the spine to move like it normally would ! Spinal fusion does not feel good and one that still moves in all directions sure as hell does

A workout buddy of mine had lumbar fusion back in 1999. He said he couldn't do much movement. He got if because of heavy lifting, he was a big guy. Back in the day I never wore a weightlifting belt even when I did heavy weights. I paid the price with a herniated disc in lumbar region. When it occurred I couldn't do shit for a week, just take Doans back pill. I just stretched it out well and avoided heavy deadlifts, no belt still. Having lumbar fusion is the one thing I do not want; the thought of restricted mobility just lingers in my head.

But am nervous to do either one. I could really use some words of encouragement. As I have had over a dozen surgeries to this day, due to injuries from my accident. And other health issues. But my last surgery about a month ago I almost didn’t wake up. They kept me an extra day and a half in the hospital. Due to my bad oxygen levels. Each surgery it gets harder and harder to wake me up. I am near not being able to walk, due to my back. But I am afraid I won’t wake up…. I don’t know what to do… 😔😔😔

    OMG! This looks horrific.
I have been told by 2 specialists I need to have this done on my L4 L5.
I'm not liking the look of this one bit. Is there anything else that can be done that anyone knows of? Thanks

That giant hinge tool to install the pin seems unnecessary given the precise skill of the surgeon used in previous steps. Others have suggested the existence of alternative surgery that doesn't stiffen the spine.
