I never followed college football until my brother entered ND in 64. I was only 10 and suddenly ND football was my life - words can’t express it. If you love Notre Dame you know what I’m talking about

I did not attend ND although I was born and raised in South Bend (Rockne Drive). Always a big fan and so was my son. When my son was 10 he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. We were devastated. Before his surgery we wrote a letter to Lou asking if he would send Mike a note. He sent a letter in the ND football envelope with the gold helmet on the upper left corner and said that while they think football is the most important thing in life he said that he and the entire ND football team would say a prayer for Mike in his battle. It was signed by Lou, not a secretary. I think it was instrumental in Mike's recovery. God bless Lou!

I'm not a Weis fan, BUT, in his third year is when Ty's last two classes were Juniors and Seniors...it was known going into '07 that would be a down year because of how poor Ty's recruiting was.

Whatever do you mean, sir!? I'll have you know that Ty Willie had "2 5 star QBs" from one particular cycle "on lock". In fact, Ty was such an elite recruiter that he did not feel the need to even show up to campus for the Mark Sanchez(#1 overall recruit that particular cycle). It must have been those "2 5 star QBs" who were already in the bag and who also made Ty feel indifferently regarding Brady Quinn..? 🤔😁

I have mixed feelings about Brian Kelly to this day, but I never begrudged him accepting the huge offer that he received from LSU. He was and is a very good coach, and there is little doubt that he elevated ND's football program. I didn't think Kelly was the best public face for the university as head coach in terms of his demeanor. To me at least, he often came across as arrogant and smug. I don't think he was particularly well-liked even inside the athletic department. He did have trouble winning some big games. The portable lift death during practice was also a negative mark during his tenure, but that mark attached to the university as well. Some complained that he didn't work as hard as he needed to in recruiting. But, in the broader perspective, if you look at the history of ND coaches, Kelly was pretty successful if the ultimate criterion is winning games. Anyway, I am so glad we now have Marcus Freeman as coach. He is still a work in progress as an in-game coach, but he is extremely motivated and I am sure that he will improve in that regard.

Just keep in mind about Kelly, if he had gotten the offer he would have been gone "during" NC preptime in the 2012 season...he also spent the first 11 years of his time at ND with a lower win % at ND than our all time average win %. ...so, context.

    • @chrisboyer2077

First 7 years: 8-5, 8-5, 12-1, 9-4, 8-5, 10-3, 4-8....then he was forced to change assistants by Jack and discovered Ian Book and had his first sustained success. Not a bad HC, but not this really really good HC he is credited with either. Of all HCs we've hired with prior HC experience, he had the second "LOWEST" win % with the only one worse being Ty...let that sink in.

@@cheetahturner4576 The math does match. The answer to your question is common sense...how does he also have the most losses in Notre Dame history? Answer is he was given the most time. Prior to him only one HC was given more than 5 years without a NC and that HC had an .850 win % and was let go after 7 seasons and no NC. Kelly got 12 years and walked with a .730 win % and no NCs

@@cheetahturner4576 I give Kelly all the credit in the world for how much he improved the overall program...that was his strength, shoulda been an AD, just not that good of a football coach. But my main point was, he tried to bounce in year 3 but didn't get the offer...next time his stock was high he bounced. The loyalty still shown to a man that had no love for ND is what bugs me.

No Qb’s, No WR. Had the easiest schedule his last year. Wr: Deion Walker, MICHAEL FLOYD, The Redick, TJ Jones, Roby Toma (and about 8 other wr)
Tight End: Tyler Eiffert, Ben Koyak, Alex Welch with like 4 other Tight ends
      A solid and stout Oline
And inherited absolutely LOADED defense (including Manti Te’o (the best linebacker of my lifteime, and most decorated defensive player of all time) including Harrison Smith…

2020-10&2 EMBARRASSED BY CLEMSON AND ALABAMA
2021- lost to his only toughest opponent Cincinnati at home…
He’s had more or just about the same amount 9-8 win seasons as 10 + win seasons.
The team he inherited wasn’t that bad as people make it out to be.
The team he left us was worse than what people make it out to be (NO WR OR QBS). His good years were due to defensive coordinators. The only bowl games he won were the camping world bowl or pinstripe bowl (which he did lose a small bowl), any big bowl and he got blown out. He only beat teams that they should beat and lost to a lot of teams they should beat.
You need to compare the first two seasons of Kelly with the first two season of Freaman. Kelly’s were FAR easier and had multiple lost games to teams who shouldn’t touch ND. All that said with HC experience and went 4&8 his 7 th year!!! 4&8!!!!
Any decent year and he got his back blown out in front of the nation by 4+ scores!!!!
He tried taking freeman when he left before he told any body about his acceptance to LSU (if freeman left we would be dead).
Speaking of dead, he also killed a guy…

I'm from CT, but was at the Orange Bowl when Rocket returned the punt against the Buffs. The headline in the paper the next day was, as I remember, "A Tip and a Clip", as I remember ND had a FG blocked and Rocket's return called back. I was also at the Orange Bowl for ND vs Miami in 1989 as described by TP. It really was a hostile environment for ND fans and the team really came out flat after Holtz broke up a pre-game showdown that could have erupted into a brawl. ND just didn't have it that day and the Miami fans were brutal.

  • @Dimwitland

We have talked about this here before. Kelly, like Kiffin, is/was uncharismatic, and a middling to uninspired recruiter (Kiffin of course with the unmitigateed advantage of being located IN Mississippi). While Freeman is very much the opposite, the value of Kelly to the program as you guys pointed out, was the stabilization of a program in freefall.
In those years, Kelly, who (like Kiffin) is and was a consummate _gameday_ coach, won for ND a number of games we wouldn't have won without him on the sidedline, games he won _despite_ the roster. Freeman, who, unlike those guys, didn't get to hone his HC chops for years at programs nobody watched, won the games he won BECAUSE of the Roster: The _gameday_ part he is still learning is the reason he _lost_ those games we would have won had Kelly still been here, although we would not have the roster he and we are now going to take advantage of, with his highly positive second derivative learning curve!
LMAO! Holtz running down the sideline, almost somehow keeping pace... shouting at Ismail, " GO OUT - GO OUT! _DON'T_ _YOU_ _CROSS_ _THAT_ _LINE_ !!! "
Holtz believed in respect for other programs, their fans and their players and refused to run up the score when it was eminently possible to do so. He represented a gentlemanly sporting instinct that was already probably 30 or more years out of date even then, and would have been more appropriateely filmed in black and white, than in color. Like Phil Fulmer at Tenessee, it was a side of him, and something that matched ND in a way that was notable _because_ it was already out of fashion even as it maddened some of our own fans.
