Dear Hollis all you need to do is harvest the outer leaves and stems from your plants and they will continue to put out new stems and leaves from each plant center . When they "bolt" and put out seed heads, save the seeds for your fall/winter crop to be planted when the nearby trees begin dropping their leaves. You'll be able to harvest again until the outer leaves are ruined by cold weather. I love the stems too as a substitute for celery in salads. A new subscriber.
I love how you illustrated how the sprouts grow long and then you bury it deep. Great illustrations and explanation. I love your channel, I learn so much.
Your explanation and illustration at the beginning was really something I needed. I have run into many videos that tell you and show you how they grow theirs but your approach is more effective than others.
My Asian wife uses bok choy in a soup after boiling a few beef shank along with quartered potatoes and green beans. The beef shank broth is so good with just the right amount of salt. She boils the white part first in two inch chunks and cuts up the green leafy into much smaller pieces and after adding the green she turns off the heat and wait for about 25 minutes while it simmers Yup good stuff.! Some times I may add a little fish sauce but only if I make the recipe. For some reason when the wife makes it there is no reason to add any thing else. I enjoy your channel. TY.
My White wife will pick the outer row of stems, and leave the plant growing. Every time the outer row or 2 matures I pick them leaving the plant. I do this all summer long harvesting pak choi and the plant just keeps producing & very seldom ever bolts.
What?? Nancy makes kimchi out of boc choy!! I love making kimchi but have only made it with cabbage!! I didn't even know you could make it with boc choy!! I would LOVE to see a video of nancy making kimchi with boc choy
@petersam4182 I know how it feels in my hand from doing it for 62 years. If you are a beginner, measure it out and put it in your hand to see how it feels. After a while you won’t need to measure any longer. You can gauge it by the feel
Well Hallelujah someone that knows how to give good instructions, heck on paper I wasnt expecting, BONUS, and then the whole nine yards. Thank you thank you I live in Florida and my only concern is daggone bugs, but Im going to give this a whirl. Thanks again yall
As far as my opinion is I’ve just gotta say, “Your garden videos are the very best on the internet without a doubt!” I watch several, but yours is the most humane, humbling, honest to goodness & most pleasurable to watch! You both truly bring joy to so many! Thank you & please continue making these videos! Love ❤️ your prayer 🙏at the end! ❣️😍
I’m so glad you listened to Nancy and did another close up of how you were planting it, the stem area. The second time it was clearly shown. Wonderful explanations.
Wow, I love this! Not sure I can do this anymore because of arthritis, but I love watching you and your wife grow these beautiful vegetables. You are an excellent teacher, Hollis! I taught for 32 years and I will say that you are one of the best teachers I've seen on RUclips! Nice work! The drawings are extremely helpful, and your instructions are perfect. (debbie)
This was the best video I’ve seen on growing Bok Choi!!! This is my first attempt at growing Pak Choi which as you know is the same as Bok Choy. When I planted my seeds, they germinated looking like micro greens. I was so confused I didn’t know what to do. I’ve looked at several videos, but your video is hands down the absolute best!!! I love the way you drew on paper how it grows and explained in excellent detail what happens as it grows. I’m praying I can save my crop, and get to enjoy my Pak Choi. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Nancy has some cooking videos on our channel now on cooking Bok Choy. She is making several new cooking videos for 2022 release. I am certain you will be well pleased. She is doing an outstanding job on her videos!
This video is 5 years old.... and I just 'discovered' you today!! I'm subscribing!! This was an excellent video!! THANK YOU!! I'm gonna be sure to watch your 'How to Make Pak Choi Soup'!!!!
I just discovered Bok Choy because I have digestive issues and bok choy is really good for your digestive system so I have been buying baby bok choy a from the store but it’s a little expensive so I wanted to look into growing it which I’ve never grown anything before , I can’t believe how huge his bok choy came out that’s bigger than the big bok choys at the store ! Great video I hope to try this out one day , thanks 🙏🏼
Ahhh I thought my seedlings were leggy so I gave up. But now I know I was doing it right so thank you for this simple tutorial! Will definitely start again!
My best friend is Korean, and I miss her mom's cooking all the time. I've watched so many videos on growing these from containers...but as an artist, the drawn diagram helps me understand perfectly. Thank you!
I really enjoy your videos, especially since you show start to finish with all the details. This video is very helpful to me. I'm growing bok choy for the second year. Last year they bolted very early so I got an earlier start this year. Best of luck with your gardening. Thanks and stay well!
Este es sin dudas el mejor video instructivo que he visto en este medio, es usted un gran maestro, gracias por compartir sus conocimientos al mas alto nivel 💚
This the best bok choy video on the internet. Thank you so much for this detailed tutorial! I hope you and Nancy enjoy your soup (recipe please!). Praise Jesus for your harvest! God bless you indeed! Amen.
I laughed so hard at the mother-in-law comment. MILs are hard to please but Asian MILs, you gotta work extra hard to please and I’m sure she was happy she got some.
I always thought they were leggy! I never knew you could bury them deep. Love your tutorials. Thanks for the valuable information and great videos!! Gorgeous as always!
Bonjour, I watched you for the first time today. I just loved watching you love your production without ever forgetting your wife in the action! The simplicity with which you show us how to do, the way you repeat what is important for us to understand, that you take time to really show us each phase of the growing of bok choys... I am just very excited to grow them too... just missing that soup recipe from Nancy! Ah ah ah
Awesome description of your drawings makes a huge difference. Thanks! BTW watching this video which was 5 yrs ago and your most current video... you still look the same! That's from eating healthy veggies and being blessed! You are a cool dude sir!
If you have a koi pond and you're taking all your water from there, you'll never have to worry about blood meal products for nitrogen again, believe me 😁
I love your videos, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I was waiting until I could have a farm to grow my own veggies and thanks to you I can start now. You are an inspiration and a breath of fresh air. God bless you booth.
As the young folks say" You the man" I'm up at 2:29 , watching you, and learning something new. Well you and Your Lady Nancy. I'm wanting to plant, more than the same old thing.
Wonderful video! I love that you showed the entire process, with the drawings, and that beautiful finished product! I’m still a pretty inexperienced gardener, and I’m also having the problem of my few-inches-tall seedlings already flowering. 🥺 Do I just pop them off?
Very interesting video. My wife and I love Bok Choy and Asian food. I planted one for the very first time this year just for the fun of it and it came up great. Any chance of you posting Nancy's soup recipe, as you make it sound super delicious. I also subscribed to your channel. Ya'll have a great day from Canada.
We really enjoy bok choy in our stir fry. Soup sounds like a fantastic idea! This is our 1st time growing it and I'm pretty sure of a good harvest now that I've seen your video! While those babies are getting started, I will build myself an awesome grow table. It looks like just what I need!
Good day Sir! Your Bok Choys are the biggest I've seen. Can you share a more detailed (in days if possible) timeline on how you grew those? Like from planting seeds to germination to transplanting and harvest. Also is it recommended to plant the seeds directly on the pot (one per pot) and expose it to full sun as it germinates (so I can skip the transplanting process)?
I am SO GLAD I came across this video. I want to grow some Bok Choy this year, and your know how, is the best. I think this will be fun growing these. I love the tip about the long stem, and planting it deep. I wouldnt have known that. What size container are you using there? Also, what variety of Bok Choy is it?
Thank you for doing this video. Thank you Nancy for having Hollis show us about the thin stem part. That helped me. I love you new Florida homestead💖✝️😁
Great! We pray every time we put the scripture on the video that it will go to the right person with the right words. For us, this is a ministry and we are spreading Gods word and love in everything we do. Have a blessed day and may God continue to bless you and your family!
Thank you! I live up in the northwest and spring has it’s ups and downs with weather! This is the first year I’m growing choys! My first batch bolted and luckily still edible but now after watching this video I pray the 2nd run will be much better! Thanks again!
Hi H&N, thank you for putting up this video. I have 2 questions for you: 1. what do you do with the stem that you left in the soil and 2. I just bought from the store 2 baby bok choy plants, nor even 5 inch tall and they start putting yellow flowers? What to i do with them? will they still make baby bok choys? Thank you....Be well.
I think you can just harvest the leaves you need and still keep the plant growing to harvest more later, that way you do not have to replant a whole new plant.
Lookup cut and come again videos. For leafy greens, if you cut the outermost leaves and leave the middle stem intact, it will continue to produce more leaves. You can do this for only a certain amount of harvesting. If you sever the plant, as long as you leave a certain amount of the middle stem intact (I think it's at least two inches), you can regrow it. Try looking up growing vegetables from scraps. I've actually got one bok choy plant that is growing really well from the bottom two inches of the plant.
I’m SO glad you included the pen and paper demonstration, very helpful. Thank you ❤️
Yes, loved that part!
I didn't see the pen and paper demo
My bad, the drawing on paper great I was thinking of the signs inside the plant, tell me how you get the writting to stay too identify your plants
Truee. He is the first person i've watched who discussed it thru paper. this is so important for me. lol.
👍🏻 Seconded 🙏

@Rebecca ~ Wow, what a great idea to replace chopped celery! 🌱🪴
Thank you for this tip.
I am new and this is a great tip. Thanks
Yes I do the same technique with my collard greens and kale. Last for years.
I love how you illustrated how the sprouts grow long and then you bury it deep. Great illustrations and explanation. I love your channel, I learn so much.

Is that a filipino dish? 😂 sounds loke one
What?? Nancy makes kimchi out of boc choy!! I love making kimchi but have only made it with cabbage!! I didn't even know you could make it with boc choy!! I would LOVE to see a video of nancy making kimchi with boc choy
I'm impressed by your accuracy when it came to hand tossing handfuls of blood meal into the containers. That was impressive.
It was funny for me. He tells you the amount and when you look for a spoon you see fingers on a hand.
@petersam4182 I know how it feels in my hand from doing it for 62 years. If you are a beginner, measure it out and put it in your hand to see how it feels. After a while you won’t need to measure any longer. You can gauge it by the feel

Thanks Nancy for getting Hollis to show us again about the root and stem and how to plant everything properly.
I never know baby bak choi can grow that big! Love it.
I really appreciate the drawings. It helps so much

This is my first time growing bok choy and your video was super helpful! Thank you and good luck. Lots of love from Russia :)
I’m so glad you listened to Nancy and did another close up of how you were planting it, the stem area. The second time it was clearly shown. Wonderful explanations.
Yes! Thank you!
So much easier to understand than any of the elaborate Powerpoint slides at my job.
Can Miss Nancy show us how she cook your favorite soup ..
Wow, I love this! Not sure I can do this anymore because of arthritis, but I love watching you and your wife grow these beautiful vegetables. You are an excellent teacher, Hollis! Nancy needs her own cooking channel.
and can we get a video of how it is cooked and prepared after you harvest the bok choy?

Not tried bok choy in my backyard yet. But how to prepare the seedlings and what type of soil to use? Your newly harvested bok choy is captivating.
I love your instructions & graphics on your planting. So easy to follow. Thank you

I will work on that. I use no pesticides at all. I use 100% Cold Pressed Neem Oil

So delicious in soup. I cook it with a generous amount of ginger and a bit of fish sauce. Careful with the fish sauce; it's salty.

I think you can just harvest the leaves you need and still keep the plant growing to harvest more later, that way you do not have to replant a whole new plant.
This is true
Oh, also: with lettuce you can take off individual leaves and the rest of the plant will keep growing -is that true for bok choy too?
We love you right back brother, you are very inspiring and an great teacher and mentor in the garden. From Bedford Texas
Thank you Alan for your kind words. Have a peaceful weekend ❤️❤️🐶
