  • How to Set Ignition Timing, Acura Integra - EricTheCarGuy
    This is kind of part 2 to the video I did on replacing a distributor on an Acura Integra. Whenever you replace a distributor on an engine like I did in that video you will also need to reset the ignition timing. I did my best to show you the operation in real time but the camera really didn't like the strobing light so I'm sorry I wasn't able to get you a better picture of that.
    The most important thing to remember with this is to read the procedure before you get started, if not you may perform it incorrectly and as a result set the timing incorrectly.
    Here is a link to the distributor replacement video

    @zengutsu You don't line up marks with the valve cover but rather the lower timing belt cover and the crank pulley. You can set your light at 16º and look for the single white mark or you could leave your light on 0º and look for the 3 marks on the crank pulley to line up with lower cover.

    @EricTheCarGuy I've set the timing and I'll go back in to the shop tomorrow afternoon. I had 133 hydrocarbons on the lowspeed test and 100 was the limit. I also failed the timing section, but now it should pass. I'll let you know. Thanks for the help.

  • @ericthecarguy

    @MattTrevett Timing is everything when it comes to emissions so it's VERY important to have correct base timing for good emissions readings.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 лет назад +1

    @MyAztecs I'd be looking to the ignition components first. You might try spraying the components with water at idle to see if it starts to miss, this may help you find the fault. It's also very important to use the correct plugs, NGK or Nippon Denso only.

    @chaiboy510 It's probably more likely that the current draw from the shorted heater was messing up the computers reference voltage to other components but if the sensor fixed the problem then it's fixed. Thanks for the update.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  14 лет назад

    @mrrrxxxxx Yes, you do. If you were not replacing the distributor and just removing it to do a coil or igniter you could mark the location before you removed it and put it back where it was but if you are changing the distributor you won't know where to set it so you have to do a timing adjustment at that time.

    @axenz1 From the sound of it I think your in time. When you set your light to 0º it should come up in the middle of the 3 marks, when you set it to 16º it should come up with the single white mark.

    @chaiboy510 In 14 years of working on Hondas I have yet to see a fuel filter cause that problem. Try wiggling your key in the ignition to see if the car stalls, if it does then replace the electrical portion of the ignition switch. If that is not the case then you need to determine what is missing when the car stalls, spark or fuel, once you find out the missing component you will be able to solve the problem.

    @chaiboy510 It could be a problem with the idle control circuit or a mixture problem. Look for vacuum leaks as well as any exhaust leaks before the O2 sensor to start. You also might consider replacing or cleaning the idle air control valve.

    I take a paint marker to the 16* mark so it's clearly visible. Really helps on these old balancers. Great vid. Had to take a quick look as it had been years since I timed one of these.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 лет назад

    @MattTrevett You might want to check for vacuum leaks as that can also send the mixture rich. Good luck and thanks for the update.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  14 лет назад +1

    @miuelevol You usually don't have to do anything to timing as it really doesn't go out unless you replace the distributor as I did in another video. If your going to just take out the distributor for service you can mark it's location before removal so you can get it back in time easy when you reinstall it.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  14 лет назад

    @mrrrxxxxx I did this because I replaced the distributor. For the most part you should never really have to worry about ignition timing. On this car it will change as the timing belt wears but by the time you change it it's back in spec. Great question BTW.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 лет назад +1

    @chillincruisin High voltage electricity (which is what the secondary ignition system consists of) carries with it a large magnetic field which you can not insulate against, that magnetic field is picked up by the lead placed on the #1 spark plug wire and directly corresponds to the firing of #1 cylinder.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 лет назад

    @Amopower I would say the ENGINE is mechanically out of time and you should check the timing marks on the crank and cam to see if they are lined up.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 лет назад +1

    @Dantesdoom To be honest I don't know the specifics on that engine or that tensioner but if it's a sealed tensioner then it should not compress down when sitting overnight, if it does I would replace it personally. Good luck.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 лет назад

    @HBGAH The set up on that engine is the same as this one and I think if you look closely it will say follow the service procedure under the timing adjustment, this is the service procedure. I will say that if the car suddenly got 'sluggish' then it's probably not the timing as that normally remains fairly constant, go ahead a check the timing but in your case I would keep looking for another cause.

  • @Michiganborn1969
    @Michiganborn1969 13 лет назад

    Howdy Eric. Just to let ya know my intake gasket is now complete. The process involved removing the distributor. I have it back in & got the timing as close as I can get it. I had the engine timing marks dead on & the #1 cylinder @ TDC.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 лет назад +1

    @wpk24rsx As long as you get it close it should be OK, in other words 'within the 2 outer lines' it will be timed. I'm really not a fan of aftermarket distributors for Hondas though as I've seen a few problems with them in the past.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  14 лет назад

    @000030stephen There is no adjustment, in fact on many late model distributor engines you need to adjust the timing with a scanner. Adjusting timing for the most part is a thing of the past.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 лет назад

    @Dantesdoom If it's new and your belt deflection is good I would say that you are done and it's time to put it back together.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  14 лет назад

    @tubefreak90 It does matter, what you are doing is completing the electrical connection, if you don't have an electrical connection then you will not be able to adjust timing correctly.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 лет назад

    @papercut1987 Yea the paint comes off the marks easily but the notches should still be there. You might find them on the pulley and pain them yourself with a little white paint to make them easier to see with the light.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 лет назад +1

    @7719stu Good idea for the marks but it's very important that you short the connector before you set ignition timing or it will not be correct. Idle adjustments are done AFTER timing adjustments but you must be sure the timing is correct first. Also make sure that you marked the correct location. Good luck.

      Hey man quick question I got a d15b6 in a 89 crx I can’t find the short connector anywhere any ideas ?

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  14 лет назад

    @thanh20 That's normal, the reason you jump the connector is to take the computer out of the timing circuit as you make your adjustment, when you pulled the jumper the computer took control again. This is why it's referred to as "base timing" because the computer advances and retards from base timing depending on engine load and condition, you set timing with the computer controls disabled.

    @andrewmylyf As stated in the video you want to check the service procedure for your particular vehicle before you adjust the timing as there are many different procedures for many different types of engines.

    @Michiganborn1969 That was just to alert those with a non-adjustable light that things were OK with the light they had and to inform those with an adjustable light to just leave it on 0. Sorry if I messed you up. :)

    @bliane386 I think you probably lost the key when you removed the pulley. You will notice a small notch in the crank and one also in the pulley, there is suppose to be a key that goes into this area to locate the pulley on the crank.

    @davidzzz94 No but it's a good place to start if it's a known problem. Diagnosis is often a process of elimination and the best place to start is with the known problems.

  • @ericthecarguy

    @silverlight76 It does give you more options but these days most ignition systems don't even use a distributor and can not be timed using a light as a result, I would keep in mind your usage before spending the extra money.

    thanks Eric for another informative video. What does it mean if you need to go further in rotating the distributor to get to the desired timing, but are unable to turn the distributor any further because you reached the stop point of its hold down bracket? Does this mean you have to pull the distributor out and reinsert it in a different position, then try again?

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 лет назад

    @nico27004 No, the keyway is offset so it's not necessary to put the engine in time before removing it. You might want to watch the video that I did on replacing the distributor in this car for more details.

    @thebanjoboy666 Yea the biggest problem with that model was the rust that would happen around where the springs would attach to the body, other than that they last forever.

    @EricTheCarGuy I had already replaced the O2 sensor before the initial test. Adjusting the timing (from 12BTDC to 18BTDC according to the smog test, I actually had it spot-on the mark, though) fixed the problem somewhat. Before I had 133/100 HC count. Afterwards I had 100/100. I also put in a ton of seafoam the day before the retest. It could have been the timing or it could have been the seafoam but I just barely passed.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 лет назад

    @jtoplinerc Now I realize that you are not setting ignition timing but mechanical timing. Use the white mark on the crank and make sure the cam sprocket has the mark 'up' pointing upward when you line the marks up. Good luck.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 лет назад

    @jhndick1 Nope, lots of manufacturers have gone to that set up, if that is the case you can not 'time' the engine in the way I show in this video.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  14 лет назад

    @200996 Ignition timing is hardly ever a problem these days. I would first look to the ignition system (use NGK or Nippon Denso plugs only), if I didn't find a problem there I would adjust the valves and check the EGR system for clogs.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 лет назад

    @jdmlov3 You will still need to set base timing, the computer can only adjust timing so much. Make sure you follow this procedure or you will not be successful however.

    @Michiganborn1969 I've heard of this before and if I remember correctly you need to take it to the dealer to have it retimed. Apparently with a GM scan tool you can correct the problem. But also make darn sure you have it in there correctly.

    info was clear and concise ..spot on i already knew about shorting connector but wasnt sure what each of the 3 timing marks were for (number) you where doing an acura and I need to do a honda so if timing is lets say 12 degress + or - 2 then the center mark will be the 12 degree mark. just saying is all as the honda im working on has no im sticker on hood .
    have a snap on adjustable timing light that haven't used in 30 years so forget why it is even adjustable other then maybe it is for verifying total timing at full throttle or at max advance ? yes im pretty sure that is what the adustment is for. and if i tested your car and dialed in 16 degrees on timing light the white mark would be showing on tab

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 лет назад

    @nico27004 You always need to make sure it's in time but for best results consult with the service manual for the service procedure of the vehicle you are working on.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 лет назад

    @MegaMarshal Crank pulley? If that is what you are referring to probably not as I think they are the same. You really don't want to swap those from one engine to another however as they are a balanced assembly.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 лет назад

    @joelkarlonas If you take the cap off and see orange dust inside the distributor then replace the distributor and see if the other problems still exist, I suspect they will go away.

    @EricTheCarGuy PART *1* hey eric! well i couldnt find what was really causing the acceleration delay problem from anything, i changed the clutch, fuel filter, clutch master cylinder even, and i cleaned the spark plug wires that goes on to the back of the spark plugs with some electrical parts cleaner, good spark plugs and connections, it still had the problem, so i just dropped the diagnostic
