Rolex Explorer + Seiko Alpinist + Omega Railmaster = Lorier Falcon III: A New $500 Alternative

  • If you love the Rolex Explorer 1016, Omega Railmaster 1957, or the very first Seiko Alpinist from 1959, and have an under $500 budget for a similar watch, then this is the review for you! Today we take a look at the latest offering from Lorier for 2022, the Falcon III, in a hands-on watch review filmed in Washington DC. Are Lorier still the best of the best when it comes to the newer micro watch brands? What's behind their rise to the cream of the crop when it comes to designing and manufacturing affordable vintage inspired watches? In an oversaturated watch market, can they still maintain their lead as one of the best go-to options? In this video I also compare the third generation of Lorier's Falcon watch to some heavyweight 36mm classics, including my own Rolex Explorer 14270 and a Brosnan-era Omega Seamaster 300m (ref. 2551.80.00) from my James Bond themed mini travel collection. Join me to find out if the Falcon III is a hit or a miss in another fun and independent review.

TGV let me tell you something. I came across your videos a few years ago. I'm a wheelchair user. During that time, I first moved into university and I had to live independently. It was my first time. I had no idea how to look after myself personally. I've always been interested in watches and your videos helped me get through that tough time. You were the only person that really kept me sane. Now, a few years later, I have a part time job at my uni and I bought a junghans form C. I'm saving up to buy a vintage navitimer 806. I love the Navi just like you. Thank you so much for everything. You have no idea how important your videos are to me.

Excellent review, TGV. What I love about Lorier is that every piece they produce have their own personality and can stand on it's own merit. While the Falcon resembles an Explorer, it's own characteristics make it a "Falcon" and not a homage. BTW your tribute to Her Majesty was truly pure class. Best always.

I've always really liked Lorier's designs, however their short model runs and constant improvements seem to have me in a perpetual state of waiting to see what they come up with next, as opposed to me pulling the trigger on something they're currently offering. Perhaps one of these days I'll finally stop being indecisive and pick one up!

I've got the Neptune v3 which is very nice for the money, however as Lorier keep improving the design of their watches I think it devalues the previous versions (not make them collectable as TGV claims). These are at a price point where most people will just buy new & why would you consider an older version where the design is inferior unless you can get it at a knock down price!

I lived close to DC years ago and I took oboe lessons at my teacher’s apartment in the Watergate complex(I was in awe of his playing, but his apartment-omg-2 stories with windows floor to ceiling in the living room overlooking the Kennedy Center)-the angular looking building next to the curved one…memories. Great to see you in DC, TGV. Like a moveable feast for history, art and culture nerds. As ever, superb visuals and fresh camera work, even on some of the most-photographed spots in the country. The Lorier is indeed a gem of a watch for the price, especially for those of us who love the low-key, classic vibe of the Railmaster , Explorer, and even the Seamaster 300. As a current and long-term DC area resident, a few peanut-gallery comments for fun. The "back" of the White House you like is actually the Front of the White House, built for the more sedate days of horse and buggy, with the lovely rotunda bit (that houses the Oval Office) the back over looking the gardens (or, garden, for those doing proper British); the next time you look at the Washington Monument, if you look closely you'll see it's two-tone -- it got halfway built, they ran out of money and it sat half-finished for 20 years -- and when it finally was finished they could not exactly match the stone color; finally, next time you are in DC check out the National Building Museum, most magnificent interior space in DC with its giant, multi-arched atrium. Building was built as HQ for pension scheme for Civil War veterans - you and the camera will have a field day in there (literally). And the just-revamped Air and Space museum -- can't wait myself for that one. Safe travels and hope to see you back in DC!

Definitely one of my favorite tool/everyday watches. I own the blue one (previous version).
Nice and clean design: perfect for all occasions indeed.
For me, we are close to the 'perfect' watch here and especially from a micro-brand.
Greatly inspired but still so clean simple and under the radar.
The improvements are really good choices. My guess is they've listened to customers'feedback.
Less raw sharp edges on the bracelet, also thinner and position of lug holes adjusted.
If I'm being picky, I would say that the '2D' hands look a bit cheap compared to others but after some time you don't pay attention anymore.

Lorier are one of my favorite micro brands too. I like their understated elegance and vintage styling cues. This Falcon does seem to be predominantly a homage to that earlier Explorer though. Apart from the handset, it’s nearly if not quite identical. No bad thing IMO, as that Explorer variation is from a long time ago and unfamiliar to most outside of the vintage Rolex cognoscenti. I can’t really find much fault with it either. Even though personally, I would of still preferred a sapphire crystal over the plexiglass. But I get why they use one. As it’s also become a trademark trait of their watches. Great video dude 👍

The USG is keeping mechanical watches alive and well. You can't take electronics into secure areas. They also don't allow electronics in many conference rooms to prevent someone from secretly recording even unsecured meetings. Some people wear smart watches or fitness watches and take them off every time they go into a restricted area, but many spend their entire day in secure areas or are constantly going in and out of them. My wife used to wear an apple watch. Then she took a new job in a building with tons of security. She went back to wearing her Mido Commander 1959 (in stainless). She also asked me to buy her a new mechanical watch for Christmas. So, thanks to the USG, you will find a great following of mechanical watches in places like DC.

Great review and production TGV, easily the best watch viewing to be had. I'm in awe of this husband and wife business that is Lorier. Got compliments whilst travelling to London about my Hyperion. However, I'd like Lorier to provide the ultimate fix for the hyperion wobbly bezel before they move on to other model iterations. You mentioned the number of GMTs in the wild in Washington DC, and another popular if more expensive American microbrand just updated its GMT which has edged ever closer towards a The Crowns almost ubiquitous design, but I teckon the Hyperion remains the best looking, best wearing yesteryear style GMT. Lorier could clean up if they sorted out the Hyperion's wobbly bezel and divisive green bezel lume. I respect that they are delaying this falcon release until they've got greater numbers and QC, so maybe that is lesson learnt but that hyperion bezel should never have come to pass on what is otherwise the best looking gmt. That said they're all very good looking.

Watches that simply copy other watches, and stick their own brand on, are not “homages”, and are not “inspired” by the original, but are simply shameless copies and intellectual property theft. Respecting the work and ownership of the original designer is not watch snobbery, but the right thing to do. While the copying of watches that are still in production is unforgivable, it is a different matter for watches that have been out of production and largely forgotten for decades. Here, a design that is no longer available can be resurrected. The Neptune has sufficient own design elements that it stands on its own, and is a fantastic design, its sub 6204 roots notwithstanding. This newest Falcon edition is a terrific improvement over the previous one in terms of design as far as I am concerned, although it comes dangerously close to being a simple Explorer copy. It is saved by the design elements of the hands, bezel and crown, and re-introduction of a textured dial, that for me have achieved the rare feat of being an improvement over the original, where I am in the camp that simply find the Explorer boring. Not so the Falcon, it is a terrific design. Just my opinion, of course.

I was born and raised in DC. It is nice to see bits and pieces of it again. When I moved to Chicago as a 21 year old, I owned nothing more than a Timex . I had no idea that people collected watches. And I had no money to get into it. But times change and here I am wearing a Datejust and watching you stand at the bottom of the Exorcist stairs. I miss living there. So the nostalgia inducing design cues of this Lorier incite that desire to buy one. Time. It passes yet hopefully a good watch will always be on my wrist to mark it with style. Thanks. Check out some Go Go music if you ever get a chance.

Thank you Michael, I can't wait to go back. I purchased several books on the city and am studying them veraciously. Anyways, thank you as always for the support.

Well done, TGV. Lived in the DC metropolitan area for about 8 years myself. A very historically rich, yet thoroughly modern area of the world. A lot of money in the area, and noteworthy timepieces, as well. Simultaneously one of the poorest cities in the nation, surprisingly, and unfortunately in the running for the murder capital, every year. I do believe that the Lorier, "Falcon III" is the most interestingly-handsome, sub-$500 watch that I have ever seen. TY for the tip. Cheers, and happy travels

This is their best Falcon yet. They combined all the inspiration points into a cohesive design, which is more than I can say for quite a few other brands. A 38 or 39mm would be more suitable for my wrist, but this is so good I am even tempted. I know 36 is a great size for people not as giant as I am, and it’s trending so it’s the perfect watch at the perfect time. I hope they don’t sell out in minutes, for the sake of the watch community. The lack of regular availability is my biggest issue with the brand. I would personally prefer a nice domed sapphire crystal, but I understand why they stick with acrylic. By the way TGV, I must commend you and Lorier on the Safari again. I haven’t checked the secondary market, but I think it’s an instant classic and wouldn’t be surprised if they traded over the list price.

I saw a couple of copper safaris for going for around 700 hundred or so. One nutter had it listed for around 1500. It is a shame the prices are high, i kind of regret not buying an ivory dial when they had the option to place an order available.

    • @mitchaelhollingsworth4069
      @mitchaelhollingsworth4069 Год назад

Unfortunately the lack of availability is an issue that plagues all the best microbrands. I would love to buy a hailos, but dont see that happening anytime soon because they sell out quickly and then trade for a few hundred more than the retail price. I have liked how lorier have handled this problem though, i have had four of their watches, and while i have had to wait for 2 of them, they have always been upfront and informative with what is going on and the production timeline. Their goal is to make iconic and classic designs accessible and affordable for people to actually wear and use, and i don't feel their popularity has gotten in the way of that. I have never felt excluded or unable to acquire one. It seems like the owners take in customer feedback and do their best to get watches they are passionate about on to people's wrists the best they can.

Hello Tristano! I reaaaaally love Lorier watches! I own, very proudly, a Gemini panda and I have to say It is one of my favourite watches. I love the design, vintage and original, the details of the dial and the caliber accuracy. It is a pretty good strap monster, even if the bracelet itself is very very very well built and realized. Time to buy another one? Maybe the falcon? Well really hope so, It could be a wonderful xmas gift 😊🎄

Speaking of Seiko I just added a Seiko prospex SPB153 aka The Capitan Willard to the collection 😉 great video pizan 🇮🇹The original Exorcist is my favorite. It was horror at it's BEST. Chuck Waters who did the stunt as Farther Karras falling down those steps was amazing 👏Max Von Sydow was my favorite character.

Well, TGV, you have gone and done it again! What a fantastic video! What an amazing watch! I love my Bernhardt Anchor. It fit the niche between field/explorer watch. I have looked seriously at Steinhart and their Adventurer or Metropole but this Lorier Falcon 3 is such a fresh take and mixology of the significant pieces of this type of piece. I have long thought about Lorier and adding it to the collection. This video and this piece may have pushed me over the edge. Absolutely fantastic job, TGV.

Hey TGV! Since you mentioned the Lincoln Memorial scene in the movie Nixon I thought you might like a bit of trivia about that scene. The Lincoln Memorial was undergoing renovations when they were filming in D.C., so they hired a sculptor, my friend Jim's brother Gino Cooper to sculpt a life-sized copy of the monument! It was done in Styrofoam with a fiberglass coating.
