woman here and I just started tattooing last year. I can't speak for any other woman but for me it took so much initial effort to get over the gatekeeping and impostersyndrome and actually start (at my pace too and not being kept small and slow in some powerdynamic), but I am so happy that I did and people like you sharing their knowlege online and for free have had a big part in that. Thank you and pls never change

    am a woman...
being a tattooer (especially self-taught, through videos) requires an entrepreneurial mindset, which is usually encouraged for men/boys rather than for women/girls. it also doesn't help that the traditional route for tattooing is also fraught with misogyny and sexual misconduct. nonetheless, i am really grateful for your amazing tutorials! :)

The reason I watched this video is that I'm learning how to tattoo on my own as a self-taught student, my parents were the ones who found my interest in art so they advised me to learn to do tattoos, and now I love to tattoo on fake skins so I hope one day I will be able to tattoo on real persons and start my job as a tattoo artist in the future, that's why I just started my own yt and tik tok vids. This is the first time I have watched your video and I really love how well you explain things and show some problems we need to look at before doing a color tattoo on a person, I'm glad to be able to learn a lot in this video, I hope to learn more from you in your furthermore videos!

In my case I’ve been a stay at home mom for 20 years. I’m just now coming back into the workforce and can’t take on an unpaid internship. (My son has autism and I can’t give 40 hours a week to anything besides him) I decided to become a tattoo artist because I can still be there for him and have something for me that also helps my husband support us. This means your videos are a huge help because I can stop when needed and still make progress. There’s also the stereotype that women with tattoos or tattoo artists are somehow “easy” or only doing it for attention. I get a lot of backhanded comments even though I’ve been drawing for most of my life. Don’t get me wrong some women like the attention and that works for them but for those of us that only want to see our art loved, not our assets it’s off putting.

What every other woman here has said- for whatever reasons tattooing as a career has high chances of egomania? And power is usually accompanied by mysoginistic tendencies. Women absolutely are as capable of being fantastic tattoo artists as men but there are egos and gate keeping and easy grounds for sexual harassment.
I’m starting off in a shop with another woman, a ~55 y/o who started her own because she was sick of being condescended. And was so happy to give me a start without the same issues she encountered.
    Thanks for the awesome video!

I think it’s because as a women it’s an incredibly hard industry to get into. I have had multiple failed apprenticeship bc my male mentor was only interested in me, not teaching me. I have friends who experienced far worse sexual harassment from their male mentor. I think a lot of women aren’t interested in the amount of beat down it takes just to be given a chance in the industry. I still have yet to had my chance and be given the opportunity to prove this is something I want and I can do. All of my personal experiences with the tattoo industry I’ll be honest have been not great and had really changed my perspective of tattoo artists. I still want to be a tattoo artist and I will still continue on push forward until my time comes but, it has been a very discouraging past few years as a women trying to enter the industry.

I'm sorry to hear that you've had such discouraging experiences in the tattoo industry. It's indeed regrettable that women in some fields are still faced with such challenges. Your experiences sadly reflect a far too common issue where women in male-dominated professions encounter discrimination and sexual harassment, something that most men have not even experienced in their daily lives. I wish you only the best and I'm confident that you can make it!

I was super lucky to find a mentor that wasn’t creepy or abusive. Most women aren’t at all so lucky. He made sure I only focused on tattooing and didn’t let me clean or help anyone in the shop and would bully any creeps that came in trying to rizz me up.

I can only agree with the others. Learning in a male dominated industry ist extremely difficult. I’ve also dealt with men trying to harass me and being more interested in me than in teaching. Ultimately, I resorted to teaching myself through videos like yours. Later on, I managed to work with a very helpful mentor. He taught me a lot of things too and through him I still believe that despite all of my past experiences, there are good teachers out there, also as men. I think women are rising up in the industry, and hopefully over time, that quote will balance itself out 😊

Girl don’t give up. I was a single mom of 2 and learned at home. Now I own a shop! However, to really be successful, you have to give up a lot, family time, friends…. ALOT so you need a good support system. It’s a 24/7 job. When you said you were a mom, I felt the need to warn you so you can prepare yourself for the amount of sacrifice it takes. I wish you the best!

As a woman tattoo artist myself, I started by tattooing myself and friends until I felt comfortable enough in making it a career choice- I then decided to do an apprenticeship I found through Craigslist. My mentor was a black woman, and she was helpful in some aspects, however I mostly learned on my own. Now, I’m doing my own entrepreneurial route and have a passion for my craft that drives me to get up and do my best for every piece every day! Sucks everyone else has bad experiences with mentors in shops, however since I’m more underground, I don’t deal with the shop BS that normally comes with the “industry”. I love what I do, and every day is an opportunity to learn more!

As a young 21 year old woman I wanted to get into tattooing, was taking college courses in art and had several men tell me that if I wanted to be in the industry I needed to be ok with being sexually harassed daily and disrespected. It seemed such a common response to me telling people my tattoo dreams that I decided not to do it. Now I am 35, unfulfilled in my well paying corporate job, and going for it after all these years. I believe things have gotten better in the last 15 years for women, but still recognize the struggles I will inevitably run into.

I did 2 apprenticeships. The first time I was sexually harassed a little bit and I was treated like a slave. The second time was at the same shop, years later under different management and it was a much better experience. I was never able to finish though as my shop needed more time from me and I had 2 kids very young and 2 jobs. If you're a woman and have kids, getting into this industry can be very challenging and cutthroat. My kids are 16 and 11 now, I'm 33 and trying to get back at it, self teaching and taking whatever courses local artists are giving

@Fani_Meherzi_Tattoo it's all part of the journey, I look back now and laugh at my first apprenticeship. It sucked at the time but that was about 15 years ago. As an AFAB person (raised female and didn't have language for my gender expression until 2020, at which point I started identifying as non-binary) who got into the industry in 2006, there are and were many men gatekeeping and making it too painful, uncomfortable, inappropriate, or dangerous to be a female tattoo artist. The first shop I went to to inquire about apprenticeships even literally laughed in my face for asking. "We don't work with chicks," I was told. When I finally got an apprenticeship, one of the artists at the shop had a huge chip on his shoulder about it and went out of his way to sabotage me and make me feel unsafe and uncertain for months. Things have improved tremendously since then but it's not been a long enough time for us to see the industry really level out in a way you may have expected. In my experience, it's generally safe to assume men are the reason women aren't represented most of the time. Even if you haven't witnessed it, there are men out there who go out of their way to maintain that power structure. Women (and other groups of people) in all industries experience this, regardless of their ambition and motivation.

As a woman trying to learn to tattoo most artists I've asked to show me the ropes were more interested in getting me naked and showing off than actually teaching me. When I tell them I want to learn to do tattoos they ask why and always give me the patronizing "aw how cute" face. The industry is biker heavy and tattoos tend to have a reputation for being "manly" despite the large number of girly tattoo, hearts, feathers, and cutesy cartoons. When you say "tattoo" people think of skulls and bikes, and grim reapers, and whiskey.

Not sure why as a woman. I would guess that women are less likely to try to learn tattooing at home, and perhaps a portion of your male audience is men trying to learn from home through RUclips? It's really hard to say, because there are a huge number of women in the tattoo industry now, and certainly many, many lady artists.
Either way, I found your channel today, having just started my journey as an apprentice yesterday, and I'm eager to learn as much as possible, and I can tell your channel is going to be of great help in this endeavor! AFAB tattoo artist here. As many women here have pointed out, it probably has less to do with you personally and more to do with male tattoo artists in general. The misogyny, harassment, bullying, etc that I personally experienced during my apprenticeship was unreal, and it was all under the guise of “paying your dues to the trade”…for an apprenticeship I was paying cash money for. I’m here lurking in your comments now because I stopped tattooing for a long time and I’ve just come back to it and I need to brush up on the basics.
I legit started to trauma dump, but I deleted it all lmao let’s just say it can be BAD for women/AFAB apprentices in shops.

I am a woman who is in many groups of male dominant fields. I got a degree in math, a male industry. I am a computer hobbyist which is mostly men as well. Go figure, tattooing is another male thing i do i guess. I think woman are commonly in restrained roles because their role models set their expectations for their best self, and many female role models are not only chosen by us, but influenced by our parents too. lets be honest, many tattooed woman are negatively depicted in American culture. girls growing up see media where tattooed women are depicted as "Bad Girls" or out of control. This has been my experience at least. my mom hid that I had gotten a tattoo and I didnt know. my grandma saw it and was all like "Why did you tell me" to my mom who acted like i never told her. because in their generation, it labeled me as a women of loose moral character. I've been asked if i was worried about how it would look to people when I am older. Someone said people would think I'm a bad parent one day. its craziness. I am a mom, and my interest in tattooing has nothing to do with my parenting skill.

I love tattooing and you're right its a total sausage fest lol i think its because drawing is fundamentally a practice in logic and spacial awareness which men are naturally better at and more interested in. At the same time women are naturally more emotional and perfectionist which is hard to be with a permanent medium such as tattooing. Just my thoughts..

Seeing videos like this always makes me sad...I am red/green colorblind, this type of work would be impossible for me.

I'm a woman but I'm also a lesbian and I like alot of male activities like computer science, engineering, chemistry, cars, wrestling, working with my hands and getting dirty. I also don't have a lot that I spend my money on so maybe this is a more expensive and time consuming activity that some women might not be as interested in watching videos about. Plus it's hard to find people tattooing kawaii stuff like I literally found this video looking for tattooing using pastel colors. This might be boring for them 😅
