hi angels! here is the Blair Waldorf video!! I tried a different format for this video essay where I focused primarily on the issues at hand and used various films and TV shows that remind me of the subject matter, to help me tell the story! I hope you enjoy this journey through history and feminism as we explore the origins of Bulimia, why Gossip Girl is so impactful and what it means to be a young woman despite the time period you were born into! It's probable Aphrodite was like this (barren) because she was technically a virgin, meaning she had no children, yet the object of every man's lust -- so could control them. There was a saying I read about ancient pagans once, they would say as a proverb "the embrace of a god is always fertile" in these male-focused societies so guys like Zeus attacking women weren't 'sleeping with them', the sexual modern understanding of degrading a woman (what he literally does) BUT impregnating them, a revenge pregnancy was the aim and object, banishment from her whole life in shame the intention, not just suffering and humiliation. Forcing her line to meld with his, robbing her of Darwinian gender role? Sexual selection. Men control natural selection and compete among one another so 'may the best man win'. But what if women don't want him? Sexual selection is the gatekeeper of genes and in archeology most men never reproduced. It emboldens that process to control fertility including the Roman plant they drove to extinction. Probably Patrician Rome along with it! A similar thing is happening now with calls to ban the Pill. A daughter is Daddy's Princess UNTIL she bleeds, then they stop loving us, frankly. We become a thing for other men to use - and dispose. So he disposes of us first in disgust. So it might extend paternal protection too. Fasting in the Church is common for nuns and those were powerful women, learned and respected in society. Their attacks by Vikings were the only of their kind men cared about. Widows were desired by men but ill-treated, since they had proof of fertility. Second wives were expected to take on children from the first dead wife. A barren woman by restriction proves purity AND reduces her burdens socially. Instead of suspicion stealing your husband, she's seen with pity by women and invisible to men. That's a superpower considering what was done to Medusa. The feminine rage in that story is great. She is untainted and unblemished by the evidence of sinful carnality. I think Melanie Hamlet has spoken on her channel about the perceived wrongness of the 'virtue' in seeing suffering women as good. The more pain we're in, the more giving we are. It's a status signal in a way. Misogynists hate virgins on the Pill because it isn't about carnality, it's about the idea of a woman 'evading' her 'due' allotment of pain. They believe it's our PURPOSE to be in PAIN for their benefit, however theoretical - including availability for attacks. The witch thing about bedding the Devil was actually a pagan ritual to technically make their first pregnancy considered divine, I lost the link for it but basically they 'break' a certain part of anatomy on a statue and it meant their baby was considered to have magical abilities and be fathered by that god. Weird right? Later on, men still got superstitious about this demon baby stuff, to this day in shows like Game of Thrones. Technically these guys thought women were cheating on them with magical Devil babies. They couldn't prove it but it's like hysteria for incubus stuff. Saints had magic but VIA them, from a MAN, not controlled by them so were 'safe'. Lilith is Jewish, not Christian, but explains Jewish misogyny against women. Similar demon baby narratives are used by bad faith Christians but Lilith is blasphemy to Christians. There is only honourable Eve. Like Pandora and the box. Eve's 'fault' was inability to contain which obviously has sexual connotations with Adam's seed. Eve's proof of failure is becoming fertile upon leaving the wilderness paradise of Eden (which was feminine, fertile and protective FOR her). Her punishment was pain. Original Sin. Prior to the fruit, she'd borne no children. The temptation of knowledge gave her misery, like Pandora. A learned woman understands the trial of her situation suddenly. There's a Claire Nakti video about Hasta nakshatra and the concept of women 'filled' with holy spirit - instead of food, I wonder? Piety, purity, power. By being 'full of faith' women evade the invasion of a man and his seed. She is ful-filled by HERSELF. I read that we have replaced the 'archaic' need for sexual purity as women with FOOD purity - non-GMO, vegan, gluten-free, carbon-neutral, zero sugar, low carb etc. The virtue signals acceptable when virginity is shamed. A virgin has a flat stomach, no babies in sight. A flat, toned, Pilates stomach.... yep, the exercise trends aimed at women. Emulating a virgin girl's gamine torso.
Saints and angels have the same Hasta-type face. Ethereal and innocent. A Victorian doll is the same, utterly lacking in allure. She is admired - but virtuously. Attention usually degrades women like meat. All the potential of youth and none of the desire. Even our body parts are normally fetishised like siren eyes, bedroom hair, the insanity of nail varnish toxins as claws to dig into a man. A mind palace by Sherlock Holmes - genius. A mind palace by a woman - tragic? Fasting can induce anhedonia. Numbness. Ascetic? It's pronounced a-see-tic. These women don't want to be looked at, they want to be HEARD.
p.s. the Austrian painter loved Neoclassical stuff and it had a resurgence in women's fashion during the Regency. Vestal virgin white gowns suppressing the flesh of a nubile figure. There are racial variances in BMI and actually a different equation is needed so pregnant women aren't overlooked. The African body fat percentage is higher by default so it's really an impossible ideal for ALL women, therefore only sold to some. Like an impossible ideal. The trend for Asians also makes sense because they have lower muscle mass on average, looking to White eyes (creepy guy eyes specifically) like white little girls. Yep, closet p3dos. Guys who love Thailand and never say why. A lot of non-white women pass preventably in childbirth because doctors often don't know BMI calculations vary. Victorian menarche for white women used to be around 18 I read, now is child age because of xenoestrogens, so creeps feel justified in peddling the if it bleeds>breeds nonsense false equivalences, yet men blame women for this Oestrogen Dominance condition for 'being fat'. It's POLLUTION. Supposedly, menarche is earlier in Africans but this might also be hormonal creams, meaning premature sexualisation was more common historically. Victorian ladies also ate mercury wafers and other sterilizing material so who knows. Terminal hair length and other data do vary racially and ladies showed off long hair which might be lost in fasting, leading to soup diets and broths. Bone broths are popular now and taking collagen. I don't know about pelvimetry, conflicting data. Victorian etiquette books TELL women to portion restrict to be considered ladies. Married off to an old creep? Paternal age causes baby loss, so the man would assume it was his fault, not her eating habits. The waist corset stuff is Ashlesha btw. Like a ch0king of the self, girdles and now Spanx can actually crush an early pregnancy. Some women don't know this. Herbal teas were also well known, including pennyroyal for the same purpose. What did ladies at lunch do? DRINK TEA. INCLUDING HERBAL TEA. And now??? The men bragged about their Pleasure Island pursuits of endless women thanks to the noxious Boomer cultural pollution - and no silly burdensome requirement to marry women, just use them like James Bond, pump n dump like stocks. Cash out like a failed Boomer marriage on a 'younger model' like speaking of a car. But no woman wants to be replaced and discarded. Now, women are refusing to sleep around.... and the birth rate is plummeting. The one assertion which is deafening. The one reaction of withdrawal they CANNOT ignore. Women never cared about genetic legacy, only safety. Men who refuse to respect the need for safety (Astromartine covers this) in women will lose any POTENTIAL of a legacy. Suddenly, after all the selection 'liberation' of men to exploit and demean and degrade generations of women, then gaslight us for it? Sexual selection is back - and men HATE it. See decentering men and the rage at it. They think we OWE them unpaid labour. Look at fetishwear, all caring professions: nurse, secretary, teacher. ....Maid's outfit, anyone?

I didnt read the whole essay. Im sure its fascinating. But I habe to atop you at "men no longer reapect the women they impregnate". Yeah, maybe if they never loved or married them. But you should not judge the world by western culture. And even in the west I have met more men that want to have a normal family life than not. More women cheat, more women get divorce, and men are more lonely and isolated than women. Women hold the power in the family and in society. The west for sure was hit by patriarchy, and I agree with the Zeus cult shifting the culture too. But the west today is more matriarchal than ever. Masculinity is all but dead. So if femininity. That was always the point, to create a genderless society stripped of all social groups, isolated from each other yet controlled by artificial identity. In essence, nominalism created Liberalism, which will lead to transhumanism.

@@esikazemese Thank you for your kindness. I do. I'm doing EMDR therapy and trying to heal from my ED with a ED-informed nutrician. Both helps a lot.
My psychologist once told me that, in a loving home environment, refusing food as a baby is our first grasp of power. Makes sense: to be powerful we need to exerce our influence on other people, and to any other necessity, as babies, we don't need the assistance of others; we can sleep, pee and poo on our own. But to eat, we need others. And the moment we realise that by refusing food we find ourselves in a place where we can give our caretakers grievance of any kind, we understand the basics of power and manipulation. It's a way of expressing dissatisfaction, the food we're being given by those who love us is not good enough. Makes sense why we carry on this practice as adults when we are dissatisfacted with our families and loved ones, and specially as females in a world made precisely to dissatisfy us. Conversely, the lack of food of any kind, be it because of "unloving" environments or just poverty, binds us to the feeling of powerlessness throughout all of our lives.
wow…..i never thought of that before but it makes so so much sense. especially when so many people who struggle with EDs have seemingly “normal” childhoods yet still present w the same exact symptoms as people with tumultuous ones

I will say- it no longer binds us when we have the means of getting genuine- REAL- psychiatric help. After years of me being in and out of help it wasnt until a specific professional who was able to communicate what i needed to understand in a non biased way that i was able to understand what i needed to change of my raise in habits to get the lifestyle i wanted. Even the victims are intelligent enough to teach something better.

thank you for creating a much larger picture with Blair’s ED more than gossip girl did itself. Much of it is loosely implied in the show but you help string it together.
As a recovering bulimic, I notice I relate a lot to Blair outside of her binging/purging. At any sign of stress or loneliness, she becomes impulsive, thinks in black and white, and acts out against the very people that cause her to lose the control she wants, even if they love her.
She heavily relies on Nate’s love for control once Serena leaves, her dad leaves her mom for a male model, and she has no one to discuss her pain with. Eleanor even explains that Blair’s been deeply hurt by his leaving but has pretended it’s all been fine as to not be an inconvenience. Her only hope was that he’d be there for the holidays-hence the pie thanksgiving episode going awry.
In “A Thin Line Between Chuck And Nate,” Blair angrily tells Serena that she can’t be like her and party all day because she’d be looked down upon for it. I don’t think Blair meant to insult her, but rather explain that Blair’s different family history full of established heirs to a lavish hotel made her forced to act perfect.
Serena’s family is rich but mostly from her mother’s marriages and mom’s wealth, and those expectations Serena feels aren’t the same as Blair’s whose generational wealth expands much farther.
They only relate enough to the fact of being high profile people, but Blair’s feeling of being a controlled pawn in wealth society is something she cant easily change. So she uses school and creating her minions to also have some sense of control-the way people see her. Anyone who Blair hid her bulimia from was someone she felt didn’t truly understand that this “perfect” act was a facade. It does feel like that-you only tell people you feel will understand.

yes!!! so true and i think ultimately that’s why she ended up befriending jennie and lowkey forgiving her in the end because she understood jennie’s desire to be perfect and keep all the ugly parts hidden in order to make a name for yourself and it’s no coincidence that once jennie started to rebel against that culture, is when her and blair started to argueb
Please create more pop-culture analysis like these in the future. This was SO well done. Feminine pain is ingrained in every facet of society, and this essay makes me wonder how it’s linked to the blatant ignorance of women’s suffering in healthcare. Maybe, since it’s expected for women to suffer, it is only fair this extends to our hospitals, and other medical institutions? Ugh, I’m going to be thinking of this essay for a long time.

100% makes sense!! especially when we consider the fact that black women were historically experimented on and still to this day are thought to be able to “withstand” more pain! i heard a saying once that said “systemic racism means, even if every person in the system is anti-racist, the system itself is racist” and i think the same can be said about misogyny!! even though a doctor may be empathetic or understanding, the system that taught them to be a doctor is inherently set up to oppress women

It’s really good, but it’s just an introduction. If you have any recommendations for books/articles that go more in depth I’d love to hear them!

@@ashleycooperpopMen suffer extreme pain and loneliness too. It’s rarely focused , ignored by our society but it’s true. When we turn 18, we have to sign up for selective service, the draft. Men can be sent to war by no choice of their own and are expected to perform the worst acts and witness awful things. My dad was drafted in Vietnam and saw unspeakable things , yet when he returned home he was called a murderer and baby killer, he just dealt with it.

I knew she was literally known as the first anorexic in history (that there is a record of) but I had no idea of all the context behind her decisions (for example, her sister advising her to stop eating)… This was SO interesting. Eating disorders as a hunger strike against patriarchy. I like your theory because in order to stay "pure" per patriarchal standards and the notion of menstrual blood as unclean, amenorrhea by passes the madonna-whore complex and provides the similar protection of girlhood, where femininity is theoretically at it's safest.

This was an awesome analysis. This is a topic I wish the show would’ve delved into way more than they did granted it was in the 200010s, so it was me to kind of glamorize it but this was an awesome analysis as somebody who struggles with this disorder.
i deff think they could have done more on the show especially cause season one was really mature and set a precedent for the show that they didn’t really keep up as the seasons went on 💔

loved loved this video essay! while watching it i was reminded of a term that i came across frequently in my own eating disorder treatment. behaviors around food and body image were often referred to as “rituals”. “food rituals” like chewing a certain number of times or “body rituals” like body checking. there is an inherent association with religion to the actions taken to control one’s own body.

This beautiful video tied so many women's struggles together: power, religion, racism, patriarchy, men, control, etc. You could write book after book on this, describing each struggle and intersection. There is something to be said that the main way women have gained control and power in their lives is through control of their and other women's bodies, as that is the only thing we've had near shared power over with men- destroying our bodies. I wonder where we would be if Princess Diana was alive and if eating disorders/disordered eating would be so glamorous still.

I think everyone has differences for their EDs. I just wanna put out there, as someone who has been disabled her whole life and is Asexual/a woman who never wanted kids, I had anorexia because of my hate for who I am physically; it was never about patriarchy or anything like that. But I can understand why women would use their EDs as power/control against patriarchy; having dealt with a lot of SA from men (and even women) over being Asexual.
just because you’re asexual and don’t want kids doesn’t mean you don’t experience life under the patriarchy which influences your decisions, our society is extremely ableist because of patriarchal ideas of what society should be and who it should serve. but i agree wholeheartedly with the first sentence 100% 🫶🏽

23:23 I will add to, as a Catholic I totally agree with your point and logic but it has to be said for context, accuracy, and cultural humility; St. Catherine’s motivations should also be considered through the lens that Catholics view the call to religious life as the highest calling a human can receive. And a life a virtue and obedience, chastity, and poverty is the closest to divinity one can achieve on earth. Following The Morning Star, Mary’s involves commitment to her ten Evangelical virtues that include universal mortification, humility, being “most poor,” and so on. So I’m not sure we can remove the Divine from her narrative because it’s highly contextual to her motives and subsequent actions.

Amazing video….I lost 95 lbs and as I listen to you I’m realizing I may have developed bulimia and it’s actually no surprise. What’s wild is that I have a masters in clinical psychology and I have great knowledge of bulimia nervosa however I never associated myself with it until I watched this video. Wow…..

To be fair the Christian practices of asceticism, in many ways worked out more seriously in the Christian East, in ancient christian practice (I'm not an expert) but seems to have been masculine practice that was made equally accessible to women as monasticism is a meta-gendered reality in Orthodoxy/Catholicism. I think you have a lot of interesting points in how these ideas have developed, and specifically bringing Blair into it is extremely interesting with her particularly interesting relationship with the Catholic Church throughout the series. A lot of food for thought, thank you!

I recently watched a video about self-harm that really stuck with me because I would never self harm but actually I do and a lot of people do too. Sometimes it’s just in the ways we intentionally set ourselves up, we cross the road without looking, don’t put our seatbelts, choose not to eat, stress ourselves out by not preparing something, it’s just a sort of constant intentional negligence of the only person we have full responsibility for. It’s surprising because life is already rough on most people so why do we feel the need to add to that?
Not all the way through this yet but I have thoughts I don’t want to forget 🙈 First, instant subscribe - this is a fascinating take and I am so happy there is a ballsy, smart lady like you talking about this! Second, I am about 4 years recovered from bulimia and didn’t grow up with religion, so this feels a little removed from my experience on it’s face, but I think a lot of the themes still ring true for me and I’m so happy to have a new way of contextualizing my disorder thanks to this. Third, I have one potential correction: you should look into the 1940s Minnesota Starvation Experiment - I think it and later evidence may suggest that restriction of food intake (e.g., anorexic behaviors) actually can lead to bulimic behaviors. This epiphany was kind of a big part of my recovery, so maybe I’m a little biased - but I think you might find it interesting at least!

I have been blessed with a supportive family, awesome friends and a boyfriend who has made me feel noting but loved and appreciated. I still hate myself and wish I were thinner. In my case, it is the pressure of media that keeps reminding me that I am not thin or pretty enough, but I don’t necessarily link it to patriarchy. It is just a way to keep us constantly dissatisfied so we can buy our way into our “ideal” selves. If I dress this way, if I use this lotion, if I try this new product, THEN I will look the way I want and finally be happy. I try to remind myself that the media refuses to embrace a more common figure because by promoting the looks only a small % of the population can achieve as the thing to strive for, the more likely we are to engage in overconsumption. The aspirational is manufactured and yet I really struggle to feel confident in my naturally more mid-size figure.

16:14 I’m Catholic and suffer from the affliction of scruples. I have been in recovery for almost ten years now. I struggle with Eucharist fasting as I rejoined the Church last year. In that time I made myself sick three times. I am avoiding Sunday mass until I figure out a healthy way to participate. Early mass has been a solution but with my mental illness I struggle.

Amazing. This is about so much more than gossip girl is about the deep underlying history of why women hate themselves and hate their bodies. what’s beautiful about it is that the self elation is our way of getting closer to God somehow trying to attain control in a world that doesn’t allow us any. It’s a beautiful way that you’ve shown us that we can see ourselves in this and end the pattern knowing that it’s not getting us anywhere our bodies, the way that they are and see our patterns of self punishment I have a long-standing curse upon women. We don’t have to submit anymore to the darkness within our mind within our souls. We can just choose love as a way out.

This was great, it is always a nice surprise when cultural criticism goes beyond the obvious points about the white male patriarchy that many have heard a hundred times before, and takes a direction of actually exploring something deeper and more thought provoking, which is hard to do these days!

It's okay. Being sad it's normal. Recovering it's a journey and it's not linear. Being sad doesn't mean you have not made progress or recovered. It's normal to be affected by this discussions and being affected by them doesn't make you less normal. In fact I would argue this topics impact a lot of people even the "normal" ones (if they even exist).

I loved the analysis, but as a rape victim I wish you would have just said Chuck Bass is a rapist. Instead of saying ”too horrifying to name” as it only silences us more the less people even talk about rape.
@@ellasoriginalchannel9713 tbh he is that without a doubt but the “too horrifying to name” is in reference to when he essentially traffics blair when he trades her for the hotel. it’s hard to speak plainly about human trafficking without youtube censoring your videos and this was already a touchy subject so i tried to choose my words wisely / in accordance with their rules but i appreciate your support and insight angel 🫂🫂🫂
