Learned from a book on bike trails of Maryland that I recently purchased that Lake Artemesia was an area dominated by African Americans during the first half of the 20th century. Apparently because segregation in Maryland was still going strong and this was a part of the state that black folks, many working for the University of Maryland, we're squeezed into.. When they brought in the rail though that same community was pretty much forced out.

Great info! Thanks for sharing. I read some of the signs around the lake which explained some of that, but they were a little worn out when I went.
