The C&O canal was operated until the 1924 flood and the B&O railroad owned and operated it in the last years to keep another rail road company from putting another railroad in. Although the railroad made it to Cumberland some ten years before the canal was completed, the canal still operated for 74 years.(1850-1924)

I’m so glad that this simply popped up in RUclips recommendations. I watched every second of this and will do so again.

Super fantastic!! I biked the entire 184.5 miles from Georgetown to Cumberland in 1997-and shot video (and narrated the history) from my bike seat while riding! I'll be editing the footage into a "documentary" eventually. A small sample can be found on my channel. As spectacular as the Paw Paw Tunnel is, it was the expense of completing it that caused the canal to struggle from day 1. Took 3 different contractors!

Mules really don't get the credit they deserve in the massive role they played in our collective American history.

Ya think with the technology today, they could have edited some narration in.
