Recovering A Jeep In The Middle Of Nowhere

  • Went along with Matt's Off-road Recovery to get a Jeep out of an area in Canyonlands called 'The Dollhouse Trail'. Couldn't pick the jeep up and carry it out due to the factory plastic front bumper, so we pulled it out with a strap. Was a very long day for me and I had way less driving then Matt and his crew had to do. The reason for the jeep being stranded was a starter failure, being a brand new vehicle Jeep prefers it be towed to a dealership to be repaired instead of on trail repair. I was just along for assistance and map reading. Thanks everyone for watching and supporting us.

    For context: Canyonlands has 3 parts. Maze is all the way around and least visited part of canyonlands national park. Canyonlands in Moab is Island In The Sky which is heavily trafficked. Needles District is south of Moab. To get into Maze you have to travel to the end of the world and when you get there you are about as remote as you can possibly get. This recovery is in Maze.

    This area is great fun. I lived in western Colorado for 27 years, and spent about 35 days every year exploring central and southern Utah. The robber's roost highlands are above and adjacent to the western boundary of Canyonlands N.P.. We went down and up the Flint trail switchbacks several times. I took my Dad to the Maze Overlook and Doll House in 1991, his first and only trip to Utah. He never stopped talking about it until he passed in 2009.

    Been to the Doll House. It is beautiful but it's remote. You have to get a permit and orientation from the Park Rangers at Hans Flat. Among the things they tell you is be able to get your junk in and out because if you can't and need a tow it will cost $3000 and up depending where you break down. We did fine. I was driving a 1967 Series Land Rover ambulance. Good times. I know you do a lot of recovery for free but I hope you got paid well for this one.

    I love the Community feel you guys have, Matt/Paul/Cole/Robbie etc and your associated teams and the likes of Mischief maker, always their for each other, even though you guys could be competing for the same work, it makes for great watching,
    When you do the truck Olympics you could add sub sections for the individuals, we joke about ugger duggers for torque settings, what about a torque comp, you have to all set x or y bolts to a set torque and get points for being the closest without using a T wrench obviously.
    You could do something similar with tyre pressures, when the whistle stops put ya finger over is heard a lot, so just what PSI is that,
    it would also bring in members of each`s teams to add some fun,
    Also blindfolded racing . . . . the passenger tells the blindfolded driver where to go, maybe make that a relay race so they swap roles at the other end and race back again.

    • @grahamstretch6863
      @grahamstretch6863 2 года назад

      We did a blindfold auto test, you know, round the cones, park in a garage, pop a balloon with a specified tyre! All done in front of a crowd in a small field. Well as my mate was doing a test run to prove the course worked I yelled ow, ow, ow, your on my leg, well you know where that went, much hilarity and a friend with ptsd for a couple of days! 🤣🤣

    On Matt's video there is considerably more discussion about the Jeep with details as to why it had to be pulled out. The Jeep is diesel and the customer had tried to start it and fried the starter. I think they had run out of fuel.

    Ya know, I still don't know just what kinda magic you use to film (well!) and pick & execute multiple vehicle lines?!? Not to mention wildlife & scenery views as well... & of course all the chuckles too! Thanx for the ride alongs !!

    I wish we had off-roading like that around where I live All we have is mud. You have amazing 4wheelin and great scenery to go with it. Just can’t be afraid of heights.

    I don't know if the viewing audience knows these areas. Canyonlands - I -Sky to the N & W of Moab, Needles, S & W of Moab and the Maze W of Moab (the way the bird flies), but otherwise, N to Green River, W and then S to Hanksville, S to Hite Route into Glen Canyon Area. 2 Hours E to Teapot Rock, 2 hours of "rock & roll" & another half hour dirt road to recovery vehicle (looked like near the Wall Camp); Standing Rock and Chimney Rock Camps are to the E, and Doll House Camps to the far E and SE. This is in the Maze region of the Park. (most remote section of national park in the lower 48). The exit route is in the park until W of Teapot Rock and then it becomes Glen Canyon Region (managed by the park) and then to the Highway. 1.5 hours N to I-70, then E past Green River, then E to the junction and an hour S to Moab. That was a long and exhausting recovery. When we go in there (usually down the Flint Trail & out Hite) we always take extra gas, (Rory knows the drill, Matt apparently doesn't). That is a big endeavor, the client is lucky to have such a skilled crew pulling the vehicle out & doing it safely.
