  • The ship Sorlandet is a Norwegian tallship that was built in 1927. This is a walkthrough of the entire ship in December 2011. This video was intended to show the inside of the ship to future alumni of Class Afloat or future trainees to give them an idea of what the Banjer and deck can look like. However, the ship will be entering dry dock in the middle of 2012 to rebuilt the inside and the banjer. This video is still representative of what accomodations on a traditional tall-ship can look like, however these accomodations will be ameliorated so don't base all your decisions of whether or not boarding the ship on this video!

That's a wonderful tour. Thank you so much for the rare peek. I must say you are a lucky bunch for the opportunity to crew and study on this glorious tall ship. Just one question.. What do they call those ventilation funnels sticking out like trumpets on the open deck? I remotely remembered it being called something like 'Kelvin' or 'Calvin'. Right?

Hey, somehow RUclips won't allow me to answer your last reply on my other video. But basically the helm works exactly like you said. It is attached to a large screw(split into two sections, one end threaded clockwise and the other counter clockwise). As your turn the helm it rotates this screw. Two threaded metal pieces are attached to each of the ends of the screw. As the helm is turned in one direction, the two metal pieces are pushed apart and thus turning the rudder. If the helm is rotated in the other direction, then the threaded metal pieces are pulled closer together . It's an entirely mechanical system, thus the rudder is connected directly to the helm. In rough seas two people are on helm to avoid being thrown around by the helm. Hope this all makes sense ....

haha now i'm so curious what pinching/zooming those big metal bits does.
there's a ship that has 3 wheels like a big mac on it's side, and 6 people can steer at once :O

@@longpinkytoes Yeah its not uncommon for larger ships to have many helms stacked. It looks really cool.

The script definitely needs to be improved.
