I know.... My sister and I were there all the time.... Such great times... Such great music.. Such an incredible time in my life. I agree... to see The Grande in that shape made me cry. PEACE, LOVE and UNDERSTANDING ... DUDE
Ah..the Grande Ballroom....my old teenage stomping ground. So sad to see it in this state.....still, these images can't erase the great memories I took from there
Great video. I remember sitting in those little nooks with my incense (blush). I was a musician's girlfirend. Saw the best bands of the time, UP CLOSE. Will never forget!
This story will be on PBS and I hope after everybody watches it that somebody will start a page to collect money to restore one of the great historic buildings in rock'n roll history.
We got married at the Grande Ballroom Sept 10 1977... After seeing this awesome documentary I realize how awesome that really was.. I was 19.. We are still happily married after 33 years. George Bogle had bought the building and turned it into a Christian Ministry for youth during that time. Thats when the Jesus movement was big. His radio broadcast from the Grande was the reason my husband and I met.. It was an awesome place...
I went to see my first real group at the grande. We drove 3 hours from Waterloo to see the who in about 1966 or so and I just could not have been more blown away than any thing I had ever seen before. I went back several times to see other groups at the time and loved going there. It was so free of bull shit and you could do almost any thing. My first time there the guards at the front door were searching every one and I was carrying some pot and freaking out until I found out they were just after weapons and could care less about drugs.I had some of the best times of my life there and will never forget it. Boots from Canada
The Grande was a crazy wild love fest, i was at hundreds of shows. Got thousands of good memories from there. I remember Neil Young there alone with an acoustic guitar forgetting his lyrics and stopping, people went crazy cheering him on till he got it again together to do it right. It was a beautiful high.
I envy you and anyone else that got to experience this rocknroll landmark!!! I'm 32 so it's just a "lil" before my time but I would give my left nut to go back and see an MC5 or Stooges show as the original magic happened...I'm still waiting to win the lotto but when I do this place will be restored and generations will gather and the only thing that will matter is the love for REAL music!!! Oh yeah the beer and the bud will be on me too haha...CHEERS!!!!!
Sorry, but I remember and I was there and it was magic. Sadly we can't go back and those days will never be duplicated. They'll be new days and I'm sure they'll be great, but this was the beginning of something that defined Michigan hard rock.
Man oh man.... I cut my r&r teeth at the grande (or simply the 'E' as we called it back then). No bad shows in the bunch.. everything on fire.. I remember getting chills and having my mind blown by Jethro Tull.. twice!.. back in '68 or '69... I think they played in May then again sometime in autumn that same year.. never seen anything like it. Anyone know if Ian Anderson has any commentary in the LTL vidie? I remember thinnking he must be Jesus to play like that. God bless the old ghosts.
The guy in the video said it best that: GRANDE WAS DETROIT's FILLMORE...for what it was to the West coast, we had the Best in the East coast, GRANDE BALLROOM...not for ball room dancing, but "balling your chick" might break out in front of you any moment. RAw music, and sex drugs rock n roll. what a time.
The opening act for the first Led Zeppelin Grande show was local guys 'D.H. Lawrence Blues Band', 2nd act 'Linn County' out of S.F. I know Zep didn't use the DH Lawrence equipment, they were our buddies, maybe Linn County's. Went back stage after the show, Page and Plant were dicks! Good show, though!
Would lie to my mother, tell her I was going to be out with my buddy delivering pizzas! The only thing I was delivering was myself to the Grande! Young people just don't believe me when I tell them all the groups I saw there. It is memories that seem like they happened yesterday. What a shame that such a mile maker in rock history is left to rot and waste away. Now I wish those walls could talk, or at the very least, sing as they once did; Grande infused life into all that went there.
I just was thinking about the 2nd time I saw the who at the grande.I eat a purple mic acid and Alice Copper was the warm up band and of course Alice was doing something crazy eith a chicken. Whow what I would give to be back in that time. Boots
My old band played the Grande a few times and I was a regular there on my off nights....It WAS magical place and I thank the Moon and Stars for making it happen...Uncle Russ you were a jerk, and still are, but Thanks as well....
Slash, Lemmy, Rage against the machine guitarist-Tom….you guys are unconvincing in this docu- cause you guys sure in the hell was'nt there- although you wish you were.
i just watched the dvd. it was good! (although i never went to the grande, we did go to the eastown theater in detroit back then, had a lot of the same acts) i checked it out from the local library here in davison mi.
they could have taken better care of it ;p I mean for godsakes, "proud" motor city men, petition the nps and get it put on the national register of historic places. tell ya what...i'll even pitch in a few bucks toward it's renovation. this dump needs to be turned into a museum or just tear the eyesore down.
Honey, the place was a dump and falling apart even when it was open. "They" (whoever that is) didnt have the kind of money necessary to keep it usable.
Great documentary but I find it hard to believe that THE WHO would of headed back to England if it weren't for the Grande, is a load of bollocks lol. Tom Wright what are you thinking ;)

Detroit seems to produce the best, straight up, rock and roll bands of all time. There’s just something about Detroit and rock and roll....🤔👍
Agreed, something about the rawness & blue collar get it done attitude. They keep reinventing the wheel
I saw so many bands at Cobo Hall/Joe Louis Arena back in the day freakin' awesome great times!!
I was there from Day 1 until it closed.
What a place and time to grow up.
Changed my life in so many ways, I could go on form pages.
My uncle saw the MC5 and Cream there. My family is from Eastpointe AKA East Detroit.

All these rock stars and nobody can step up and fix this place!
Great video. I remember sitting in those little nooks with my incense (blush). I was a musician's girlfirend. Saw the best bands of the time, UP CLOSE. Will never forget!

What about the BIG BAND sounds of Billy May, during the 50's - met my husband there dancing on "Stag Nite".
Best days of my life! I played there with the Metro Blues Band. Duane -- if you see this call me. Phil - Mad Cow Photography

Congratulations on completion, look forward to attending one of the US Premier's this summer.

I hated the Mc-5. I liked Clapton, Zeppelin, Beck, Page, the great musicians. I saw them all. No theatrics there, just great musicians.
