- Documentary looking at how Detroit became home to a musical revolution that captured the sound of a nation in upheaval.
In the early 60s, Motown transcended Detroit's inner city to take black music to a white audience, whilst in the late 60s suburban kids like the MC5 and the Stooges descended into the black inner city to create revolutionary rock expressing the rage of young white America.
With contributions from Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper, George Clinton, Martha Reeves, John Sinclair and the MC5.
Don’t let the techno and hip hop distract you; this is ROCK CITY. Even the rappers are Rockstars in the D🤷🏾♂️
bless the BBC for taking the things we take for granted and putting it on a pedestal
While Twain was in London, someone started a rumor that he was gravely ill. It was followed by a rumor that he had died.
According to a widely-repeated legend, one major American newspaper actually printed his obituary and, when Twain was told about this by a reporter, he quipped:
“The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.”
(Detroit isn't dead folks. It is very much alive. New businesses. New construction. Homes being renovated. It may not be fully recovered but it is alive. So don't write its obituary yet.)
Bob Seger was there throughout all of the 60s and 70s and still lives in metropolitan Detroit. He became a bigger act than any of them.
He also didn't let fame drugs & money ruin his life smart Man 👍
I always wondered what Iggy and Alice thought of each other as showmen. Now I know---it's kind of as I thought. There are similarities and differences. Alice's version of "shock rock" was more polished and orchestrated, where Iggy was more spontaneous and improvised with his presentation
Watch "It Came From Detroit" to see how the spirit of the MC5 continues in newer generations of bands. The Dirtbombs, The Paybacks, Electric Six, Hard Lessons and many more.
Sorry Alice...but you aint got nothing on The Stooges! "They just stood there, and let Iggy do all the work"? Yeah...but they rocked way harder than ANY of your songs. No contest. They avoided that whole decadent seventies stadiumrock lameness.Where ROCK was just a word...without any content.🙄😁Hail Scott and Ron Ashton..They really were a special groovemachine.
Yeah Alice, sorry I didn’t put makeup on to see a concert.
where is Mitch Ryder, GFR, etc?
I LIVED THESE TIMES, AND I WANT TO DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN IF I COULD, COUSIN FIGEL
Changing times I was there !!!
Iggy and the stooges so much better and powerfull shit than any other band of any time, this times are boring, rocknroll is dead, this times we have only shy vocalists with no presence on the stage
Now if that's not an oxymoron I don't know what is. It took Alice Cooper moving back to Detroit from Los Angeles in order to make it
Where so called punk music was really started. Detroit. Where Rock and Roll Started! FACT!.
Great video
if Eminem grew up on 8-mile for real, he wasn't exactly a Suburban kid
Alice Copper knocking the Stooges is like a turd knocking a filet mignon...
He didn't knock them. Just saying the whole band became like Iggy Pop rather than Alice doing all of the theatrical work.
Comrade Thoth And he is right. The Stooges were not shooting for theatrical. They were in your face, but their music is very well composed and arranged.
I still have my free John Saint Clair poster.
1:20 People have ALLERGIES Jimmy! OMG the humanity!
Stevie!!
true. but detroit had its own garage rock scene before the white stripes that definitely helped start the garage revival in the 80s. groups like the gories. unfortunately jack white gets the credit haha
notfragile33 The band's in London that you mention happened a decade later.
unless you live in the Motor City you just don't get it!
Pete Feges
I live in Cleveland, and I get it.
Comrade Thoth
Yep
Bc Yer all be so special?
Detroit: America's Third World
I'd go with Furnier "Alice" 's band more, MC 5 and also Amboy Dukes for best rockers from the day.
For a second I thought Stevie Wonder was jamming with Simeon but I'm sure it's Malcolm Cecil.
is that David Was at 10:09?
It was this very thing that made all of us youngsters in Detroit think we could rock. (back then) I personally never thought anyone was going to get, "discovered" in the Detroit area. I used to jam around with my friends & bandmates thinking no one will ever be found in these shit dives Piggy Slop got know 'cause he was a cock sucker. Read "Wonderland Ave" by Danny Sugarman.
And there I was thinking Iggy Pop got known because he was the twisted frontman for a brutal, primal rock band, which produced live shows and albums utterly unlike anything else around at the time.
who is john st claire. ive heard of lake st claire
Michael Beaubien Sinclair....
The real Jack White is Jon Spencer from D.C.
Detroit > San Francisco
Detroit > Seattle
Detroit > London
so depressing
Yoko ono what a talent!
Lol
I like The Stooges, but I just can’t trace the line between them and punk; punk as I know it anyways. For me punk as I know it and identify it , starts with the Ramones. The Stooges, MC5, The NY Dolls, etc....sound to me like a stripped down version, more agressive Rolling Stones.
Does it really maTTER WHAT COLOR WE ARE? i AM AN ORANGE SPACE ALIEN WHO LOVES dETMUSIC hEADQUQURTERS OF THE WORLD
Koffin Kats
Diana Ross is the Queen!
I agree. As far as I'm concerned, Iggy Pop is a legend in his own mind. His music was crap. And The Stooges? Who?
this is an atrocious take especially for 8 years ago
@@neal1692 I agree lol
They literally created punk rock and brought a different kind of show to the people. A lot of people tried to copy them but failed
