What was your favorite track of True Romance? What was the first time you heard about Charli? Are you happy with the direction she's gone? Sound off below!
Probably grins and stay away but I love the other tracks too. I heard about her first when one of my sister showed me Boom Clap on my other sister's laptop back then in 2014. I'm so proud of her to became that famous! Good to be a fan!
I discovered her during this era and this album is so fucking good, I wouldn't be a stan if this was bad, Charli, Sky Ferreira, Marina, Ellie Goulding during her Lights era were everything
this album HAD NO BUSINESS being my favorite when i was 13, but listening to it again at 18, everything feels so relatable and it’s so shocking that she was able to convey so much emotion at such a young age. i love the new vibe of her music but nothing will top the emotions that true romance makes me feel
I know it's probably just me looking at things with nostalgia goggles on, but True Romance remains my fav album from her. Also thank you for mentioning Superlove! It's my fav Charli single and really deserved to smash... iirc, wasn't SUCKER pre-boom clap supposed to sound like Superlove? That j-pop inspired sound? Superlove being a Japanese bonus track on SUCKER leads me to believe so.
True Romance is probably the most realized album cycle she’s had other than Sucker. I think that’s why we like it so much. That and it being a time capsule of oddly more stable times. Even pre-Boom Clap, Sucker was gonna sound kinda punky from the demos that leaked. Like she leaned into that aesthetic after Superlove didn’t make any noise (it should have). Boom Clap and her sessions in Sweden really made it poppy. Her doing J-Pop would have been a moment though, her scrapped third album had a collab with Kyary Pamyu Pamyu which did get a performance on Jimmy Kimmel.
Sucker was supposed be french new-wave and uk indie-pop/punk inspired. The era was supposed to be red, sexy and punk inspired. But then she surprisingly hit it big with Boom Clap and the label decided to change her trajectory to become more mainstream artist, which sucks cause I really want that Red Version!
oh the nostalgic, i wanted to be her so bad when i was 18, she inspire to be more daring with my style, i change from wearing just jeans and hoodies to chunky boots and chokers and steal my mom's slip dresses. I love this era
Love her gothic era, so unique and gorgeous. I have never heard music same like this to be honest. Super Ultra is an icon. I wish I have seen her in live at this era... Her outfits in this era is 🥵 Waiting for the vinyl release to get my hands on it.
i def love her newer work, i think she’s really come into her own. she’s truly the queen of hyperpop which i think became evident when she released pop 2. my fav charli album is def between charli & how i’m feeling now.
@@carlybrooks9793 In some ways she almost did the same thing on the lead up to Charli last year with N1A and Pop2 but none of those tracks made the final cut except Blame it on Your Love. I think the stakes for her success were much lower in the True Romance era. Sucker despite being a fun era was a stressful time where she had to compromise so much.
I would not be surprised if Charli borrows the sound again one day! She’s remarked a lot over the last year how she still loves the record so perhaps she’ll sing a few tracks on her next tour or even record a few tracks in the spirit of this underrated gem!
True Romance is my favorite Charli record to this day! (let's see if Crash will change my opinion) I love the production, the goth vibes, the verses, everything about it touch me in a way that no other record do My favorite song is either Black Roses or Stay Away, i can't decide I wish i had discovered Charli in this era, since i discovered her during the Sucker era
Great to see you taking a short hiatus. I feel like True Romance and Sucker have no look for Charli. Similar to Heaven and Hell by Ava Max, while some songs were catchy, you don't really get the personality of Charli (same way with Ava). The only difference is I feel is that True Romance has more likeable songs. She has really made a name for herself though with Vroom Vroom and her new projects.
I was glad to take last week off because well... we know why (I’m more than happy with the results tho!) I thought she actually did a good job showcasing that she’s pretty much the anti-pop girl with the two records. When I criticized Ava, I was also referring to her lack of public persona. Charli in 2013-14 was abrasive, cagey, and a little intense in interviews to the point Atlantic hired media coaches. There was one interview where she played along when an interviewer mistook her for Lorde.
That makes sense. Eventually I wish to see you upload more videos of her contemporaries that she inspired and has worked with. Hyperpop and PC artists like Slayyyter, LIZY2K, Danny L. Harle, Hannah Diamond, 100 Gecs and more. Still love your videos and can't wait for more.👍
@@EljohnMacaranas I am into her. She is bringing something new to the table and I think she can last in the industry. I'll be excited when the video arrives!
Unpopular take alert: True Romance is my least favorite of her projects. I enjoyed it at the time, but like you said: a lot of it feels dated today. A lot of the album sounds like the 'cloud rap' that was popular (a la ASAP Rocky, Lil B, Clams Casino) -- very ethereal and sample heavy and if you're not in the right mood, sort of plods too much for me these days. Plus between the dense production and honestly an under-developed on-record personality at the time, her vocals tended to be the least essential element to a lot of tracks. I think the Sucker-era is when she really developed a personality.
Honestly, this is a pretty solid take. As I took time to record this video and research and listen back on her early stuff: this record’s a pretty solid collection of her mixtapes’ best tracks. On-record personality is always a challenge on first albums. Though by Sucker she did have a very distinct one. I somewhat miss her vocals from these days, the autotune is necessary bc she blew her voice out on poor technique (an interview in 2017 revealed this) but her vocals in performances this era were stellar.

grins
I’m happy and my fave is either grins or cloud aura
i was really obsessed with grins, set me free and so far away.. but ultimately Stay Away proves to be a timeless track
"Grins" is my favourite song of True Romance. Second is "Nuclear Seasons" ❤️
Probably grins and stay away but I love the other tracks too. I heard about her first when one of my sister showed me Boom Clap on my other sister's laptop back then in 2014. I'm so proud of her to became that famous! Good to be a fan!
My favorite era of her to be honest. The aesthetic and the songs feel really good in my soul.
The songs are like a warm hug from 2013!
Same here!

HAPPY BRAT WEEK, especially to SUPER ULTRA AND TRUE ROMANCE
See ya tmw! 💚
Thank you for mentioning SuperLove. It's probably her most underrated song and definitely should have been a worldwide smash.
Like it’s one of her most underrated bops, so mad they pivoted away from it for Boom Clap which I adore but def abruptly killed off the era
oh the nostalgic, i wanted to be her so bad when i was 18, she inspire to be more daring with my style, i change from wearing just jeans and hoodies to chunky boots and chokers and steal my mom's slip dresses. I love this era
YES omg she was the tumblr queen
SUPER LOVE IS UNDERRATED!!!
Deserved to be a smash!
I know! It is not on my copy of Sucker, (no bonus tracks) so I'm pissed about that! But it's a fave of mine!

She’s so good at evolving and the next album I just know will sound so different but in all the best ways.
SUCH an underrated album of hers!
omg i said it sucker is my lest fav album from her the singles dont reflect the album at all but true romance is soo amazing
True Romance is a classic!
Eljohn Macaranas I feel like it the project she was wanting to make and that she first attempted with Heart breaks and earthquakes and super ultra!

I need your love is such a bop tho, we stan the retro vibe
great video i love true Romance i wish we got more of it I'm glad people haven't forgotten abt it

ICONIC
Charli literally is a legend
End of the world with Alex Metric felt like it should have been on the album too

@@aviemoreno4647 I’m working on a video for one of her contemporaries as we speak actually! Though she’s not quite Hyperpop: Rina Sawayama.

So far away and how can I are my favorites on the album and YOU DONT LIKE THEM? 😪😪😪😪😪
Unfortunately, they aren't my faves! I'm into atmospheric but they can be a little too moody for me. 😭
Im pretty sure this where lorde got her style
Lorde did tweet “beaches and oceans for my baby” awhile back

I’m sorry but I don’t like her she uses way to much autotune and her sound is to repetitive but I like how futuristic the idea of her music is though
