The title track "Sucker" was my fav. It's so underrated -- it's like if Jack Antonoff produced a M.I.A. song. I think her team should've kept "Superlove" on Sucker and re-released it after "Boom Clap" popped off. It's still probably her catchiest song. Sucker had the potential to be big despite not sounding like anything else at the time
Superlove is so underrated omg i wanna talk about it when i discuss True Romance, I wish Atlantic had kept it or even commissioned Charli to remaster it for inclusion on Sucker! I think the potential was squandered by promo-ing and single choices. Break the Rules is cute and great for like shopping malls and movie trailers but as a single, it hurt the cycle.
The fact people didn’t appreciate her first ep and album, breaks my heart...true romance is my #1 charli album but I honestly can’t even pick one I dislike AT ALL. I love love love everything she does.
She was so niche for the time, still is today. I adore her regardless just wish she’d be spoiled with some public acclaim every now and then but never to the point she feels the need to conform or stop doing her thing. It’s a weird tightrope to walk over as a musician.
Comment your favorite Sucker track! I forgot Need Ur Luv which is one of the better tracks off the record. It has a lovely melody that probably warrants more attention but remains a deep cut.
In my experience, most angels are either ogs who love tr and sucker, but not really everything else, or newer ones who dislike those but like everything else. And i could never understand those types of people. All her projects are masterpieces, she has very few songs i dislike/don't listen to sm. I only started listening to her in April this year, but she's already one of my favorite artists of all time. I need to listen to Sucker more, but I love London Queen, title track and Red Balloon. Also, Superlove is one of my fav Charli songs, it should've been on Sucker.
Doing it is my honestly my fav cause I have so many memories attached to it. also the boom clap video was filmed 30 minutes from my home. So i have to love the video for that reason
Omg! How does it feel to live near somewhere pretty iconic? Doing It is such a good track, I wish Americans had better taste bc it deserved way more here in the states. It’s a bop
someow never knew die tonight was originally for one direction but it makes a lot of sense. my favourite on sucker has to be famous i think but for a period of time back in 2016 i pretty much based my personality off the whole album, i was obsessed
Famous is such an underrated cut and this album definitely deserved a little more recognition. Also basing your personality off an album is so relatable, 2017 Melodrama vibes
I'll never forget the first time I heard Boom Clap on the radio and I thought Gwen Stefani had made a miraculous return to relevance 😂. I think my favorite song is the closing one, Need Ur Luv. I love the feel of it and her vocal delivery 😍.
Sucker remains the best album I've ever heard. Boom Clap is so nostalgic and I just grew up with this album. It was a very unique one at the time till now. ❤️ I got the CD version for Christmas.
wait ik i commented like two years ago but im back to say im a proud sucker defender 😭 tho true romance is one of my favorite albums sound wise, sucker makes me SO nostalgic to the early 2010s (which was a time i lived my childhood in). tho some songs can feel a bit of its time (die tonight 😍) most songs like body of my own, famous, and the title track are so underrated :) i think songs on this album will be placed in A LOT of teen shows in the next couple years due to its nostalgia bias lol
i love old charli and current charli, both were making the perfect music for the time, true romance was there for my edgy school years, sucker was my college walk album, and the various ep's were there first time i ever paid my own internet bill, then charli and hifn got me through lockdown (Along with MARINA's ancient dreams album) whatever charli does next i'm here for it
@@EljohnMacaranas well i was about 20, and i was poor most of my life so couldn't afford my own internet until a few years back, so in about 2016 when charli was making her big hyperpop debut i was only just learning how much the internet had changed since i was a kid playing space cadet pinball on a windows 93 rig, but one of those eps i remember was one of my first itunes purchases in xmas 2016 (I think it was vroom vroom) , i'm getting old.
As a fan that found True Romance and devoured every piece of music in between, when “sucker” came out, I didn’t like it. I was one of the basic gays that was like “OooOmmMmGggG...... I wish she’d stay a gothic girl forever” but, the beginning of 2015, no music was “doing it” for me so I gave “sucker” a second chance and I prayed to Charli that she would forgive me for sleeping on her album for 6 months. I think the fact that all the music sounded a certain way wired my brain into thinking she had to stick with one genre. Idk. But sucker is such a monumental place for her career. She gained many fans during the sucker era. I was close minded when it first dropped not gonna lie. I feel like the album was a huge learning process for her and me. I’ve learned that artists are allowed to do whatever the f they want
Her gothic days are still some of my favorite moments! I don’t blame you for being skeptical at all. But Sucker was such a moment if we have to be honest. The cheerleader aesthetic, the sound, the acclaim. I wish the public had been onboard with it sometimes but it was a great learning moment for her to pursue what she wanted against the label or other people’s interests. Artists /should/ be able to just do whatever the f the want esp artists like her!
I'm a 39 year old guy and love the song Sucker. The album is really good too. I agree that Break the Rules is not a great song but she pulls it off like no one else could. No bad tracks. She really brings the swagger. The sounds present on this album still sound really fresh to my ears. Gold Coins is another one of my favorites.
Sucker was how I first got into Charli! My friend introduced me to her back in 2014. I was 20 and in my second year of uni. Hearing the songs makes me miss those days so much
some people (maybe) think “oh ag cook invited hyperpop” cuz ya he did in fact officially start the genre, but I also think charli did cuz she put her spin on it and that’s what hyperpop artists are doing today
Charli definitely made it accessible, the original hyperpop sound before her was a little too niche where she made it easy for people on the fence to jump onboard I do agree it’s just as much her genre as it is AG’s
I still love this album despite it being lower on my Charli ranking. Famous reminds me so much of a Beck song from Colors since Greg Kurstin produced both Famous and most of Colors. That is such a good album and I hate that Beck fans give it so much hate.
Greg’s a legend. His work with Lily Allen on It’s Not Me, It’s You remains impeccable as does his recent works. I didn’t even realize Beck stans hated this.
@@EljohnMacaranas They hated it because it was pop. I'm both pop and indie stan, and I hate it when indieheads trash on pop when there is good pop music out there. Colors was top-notch compared to some stuff on the radio.
For my money it didn't age SUPER well, but it showcases that she had a personality that people could get behind and could chart So when you've proven your worth to the masses, why note experiment in a way that really showcases your full potential
I wanted to do a video about Femme Fetale being the first Britney era I was like cognizant enough to live through soon actually, so you might get some Britney analysis (ofc I’ll cover the rest as well just not chronologically)
Eljohn Macaranas she said that they couldn’t come up with the right video concept so it was cancelled but this was also right after she recorded with sophie for the first time and started crafting xcx world so i’m sure that played into the decision as well!
I really liked the direction Charli went with the Sucker album. Her I will call it „real sound“ like her last albums is not my kind of bread unfortunately
I genuinely think her current stuff is her “real sound” for now and I love anything she does. She’s disowned Sucker which is unfair bc for what it was, it was a good pop punk record. Charli’s always seemed to be a contrarian like she runs away from trends. True Romance defied the switch to folk pop, Sucker was a rejection of the traditional synthpop revival of the mid 2010’s and her PC Music/Hyperpop sound is her current rebellion. I imagine if it ever catches on, she’ll go back to a Sucker sound or back into ambient pop or even pivot to indie.
PC Music is definitely not for everybody. While it’s given Charli her cult following, it definitely turned off the GP in 2016 when she pivoted and scared Atlantic into locking her out of what would become the unreleased XCX World. I recommend listening to some of her tracks on Charli if you haven’t, the solo tracks like I Don’t Wanna Know, Official, and White Mercedes definitely feel like evolutions of the sort of pop here. Her next album is apparently rumored to be inspired by Janet Jackson so it’ll probably be more traditional pop.
Thank you for making this videos about the more underground artists like Charli Xcx. Would love to see videos about Marina Diamonds discography as well 💕

Superlove is like the only old charli song that i ADORE with all my heart
we all know boom clap is a banger, don’t lie... that song MADE her solo career and all the local girlies still bang to it, i do 💁🏼♀️
At least you’re not lying! I don’t know how to feel about it though, hey siri play Boom Clap 🤷🏻♂️

thank you for covering this! i love charli so much and where she is in music now, but sucker will always hold a special place in my heart!
So Over You is my fave on this. Her tone and inflection along with the cadence of the beat is just excellent.
