Voting for president really should be a national holiday. A lot of people don't vote for president, and way way less vote for senators and elections between presidential. The suit was filed in a FEDERAL court that HAPPENS to be located in Texas. The Governor has no more authority over it than he does over (for example) what the Internal Revenue Service does in Texas.

yeah, but they're suing the people who use google not google itself. If you watched the video, then let's say Google defends someone and takes it to trial and the shell company somehow(remember the judges almost always favor them) manages to lose. Okay, well it's a shell company, as described in the video the company collapses and that's the end of it, the defendant doesn't get anything because the shell company is an empty "shell", no goods no money. It's designed for this specific purpose, distribute money so that when it collapses the people receiving the money are free.
The trolls still need to fund the court case though so if google stepped in and backed all the people being sued it would force these shell companies to back off or fold, if every time they tried to sue someone and google stepped in then they would get no where and lose money on court costs. Google has the ability to step in and bankroll the people being sued but obviously google just doesn't care. Not to mention Google (and i'm sure they could convince other large tech companies) could try to use some of its considerable influence and wealth to push through bills/laws that prevent this kind of patent trolling.

Hi Austin, I remember first hearing about your company being sued years ago... I can't believe it's still ongoing. As a fellow software dev and flight sim enthousiast, I thank you for going through the effort of actually investigating this absurdity in depth and raising awareness. The more people know about this, the more likely it's going to be that things might change. I find it rather disappointing that companies like google don't fight this nonsense, as this is clearly doing damage to their customer base. Either way, can't wait for X-plane 11! The new UI looks especially awesome.

This should have millions of views, not thousands. Unfortunately, because most people do not own businesses (and are therefore not *directly* affected by this *at the moment*) they don't really care. Some of the major companies that have previously settled with patent trolls (who happen to have legitimate patents on their portfolios as well) are also bound by their agreements not to go after the patent troll in the future, so they can't fight on your behalf. The whole patent system in the US is completely broken - you can say that what was once a good thing is now being used mostly for evil, destroying people, innovation and businesses in the process; i.e.; doing precisely the opposite of what the patent system was created for. This madness must be stopped.

I am Aviation mad, hence X-plane crazy, I have bought 2 copies (one for pc one online download) I have also bought all the planes for the Android version. Your program is amazing. C++ and OpenGL. OpenGL is not designed as smoothly as I would like, but I LOVE C++... I jus LVOE that language. Literally FUN to code in. Coding is my favorite part of the job by far, customer service and business and legal dealings all annoying. If all I had to do was code I would have made THREE X-Plane's by now!

it is the us law system that hides them. in germany a companys owner can not hide, unless s/he goes to the stock market, but that would mean that the company would need an "Aufsichtsrat" who in turn, can not hide.

Yes, both judges have recently retired... and now work for the very lawfirms that often represent patent trolls.

Hi Austin, I remember first hearing about your company being sued years ago... I can't believe it's still ongoing. As a fellow software dev and flight sim enthousiast, I thank you for going through the effort of actually investigating this absurdity in depth and raising awareness. The more people know about this, the more likely it's going to be that things might change. I find it rather disappointing that companies like google don't fight this nonsense, as this is clearly doing damage to their customer base.
Either way, can't wait for X-plane 11! The new UI looks especially awesome.

This should have millions of views, not thousands. Unfortunately, because most people do not own businesses (and are therefore not *directly* affected by this *at the moment*) they don't really care. Some of the major companies that have previously settled with patent trolls (who happen to have legitimate patents on their portfolios as well) are also bound by their agreements not to go after the patent troll in the future, so they can't fight on your behalf. The whole patent system in the US is completely broken - you can say that what was once a good thing is now being used mostly for evil, destroying people, innovation and businesses in the process; i.e.; doing precisely the opposite of what the patent system was created for. This madness must be stopped.
I sincerely hope you don't have to spend too much time on those white collar criminals. I thank you for making x-plane. It had a superb effect on my professional career and it's a great hobby too. Keep up the good work!

What does that have to do with my comment? I'm saying as a developer I'm vulnerable to scum like this. If I have no way to protect myself against them then Google should step in to protect the developers on their behalf. Otherwise developers, their life blood, will stop developing for their platforms.

C++ and OpenGL. OpenGL is not designed as smoothly as I would like, but I LOVE C++... I jus LVOE that language. Literally FUN to code in. Coding is my favorite part of the job by far, customer service and business and legal dealings all annoying. If all I had to do was code I would have made THREE X-Plane's by now!

What would I give for knowing how to write an X-Plane in C++ and OpenGL... I am such a noob I don't even get quaternions right (Want to use it for a rotating camera such as the follow camera in x-plane)! But yeah, it is such a fun to do even if you fail all the time, but that's coding... Trial an error :D

it is the us law system that hides them. in germany a companys owner can not hide, unless s/he goes to the stock market, but that would mean that the company would need an "Aufsichtsrat" who in turn, can not hide.

Say a corporation chartered in NY wants to do business in Georgia. They hire a company thatacts as the Registered Agent. That is wall #1. The corp. in NY is owned by another corp. chartered in Nevada.
"Shareholders are not a matter of public record in Nevada... Unlike some other states, Nevada Corporations can hold their annual meetings anywhere, even a foreign country, with a majority sufficing for a quorum vote for any actions. These meetings can be held telephonically, or via various other “modern” means...
Nevada Corporate law also allows for “nominee” Director and Officer appointments... Then THIS company is owned by a Limited Liability Cor- poration, or LLC, in New Mexico. New Mexico does not collect any info about the members/managers of an LLC, does not require annual reports, and there are no fees or taxes. A registered agent is all that is required.

The US is of, by, and for Corporations. Period. It used to be very free in the sense that nobody really gave a fuck what you did, as long as it wasn't totally outrageous. Now it is a corporate surveillance state, backed up by a paramilitary police force, a corrupt legal system based on a toothless Constitution, and a legislative branch for whom bribery is de facto legal, corporations have legal personhood, and corporate "lobbyists" write legislation.
It was an article written in the Dallas morning News (I think that was it) that spoke about a local Dallas Attorney that had made Millions suing companies for violating patents. Patents that had nothing to do with what they were inventing. It would be something like he patented curved corners on all devices or products. Just imagine how many things have curved corners? How can one person own a patent for that? It is insane.

The patent offie (stupidly, with gross incompetence) hands out patents where the GOVERNMENT decides WHO IS ALLOWED TO DO WHAT. Above, The GOVERNMENT said that a LAWYER named Raymond Niro OWNED THE IDEA OF USING WIFI... so he started suing.
That is the GOVERNMENT deciding who is allowed to own what idea or technology.

I do not think Patents would exist in Communism. They are a defect of Capital Investment, so that one can earn the return on the Investment in an idea, before everyone else copies it. In Communism, no one would own the idea and everyone would be allowed to produce it, just not profit individually. You are right that it is a loss of freedom, but it is one that is given up for the right to participate in Capitalism.
