- ( www.TFLcar.com ) For 2012 the Nissan Versa and Toyota Yaris are both newly redesigned. The new 2012 Nissan Versa gets 38 MPG on the highway while the 2012 Toyota Yaris is all new except for the engine and transmission while the 2012 Toyota Yaris is all new except for the engine and transmission. Both cars now face extreme competition in the small economy car segment with cars like the Ford Focus and the Honda Fit. So how does the 2012 Nissan Versa compare to the 2012 Toyota Yaris. Check out this video review to find out.
These guys don't realize that not every car is all about 0 to 60, it is about getting more MPG's and not having to visit your mechanic every couple of months.

I don't know why people think the Versa is so ugly. I think it looks great for a subcompact car. Drove a Versa hatchback today and I plan on buying one this week! It handles great for its class and has all I need :)
The cars would have gone a lot faster without the dead weight inside them.
Don't kid yourself. They are dangerously slow.
Tom Brooks No they are not. I own a 2015 Yaris and it has more than enough power for the average person, including myself. She cruises at 120 kph on the highway and in town there is plenty of zoom zoom. Not everyone needs 300 hp. Best part is I get 37.5 mpg all day every day.
+Tom Brooks that means you cant drive a car you rely on powerful engine
*+ Tom Brooks Don't pat yourself on the back. You're a fucktard, and you're wrong. They're only "dangerous" when piloted by a fucktard such as youself.*
Toby Miles Look dude you should really stop trolling all of my posts. After all it's way past your bedtime tonight and if your mom finds you on the internet again she's liable to ground you from your Roadblocks account again.
So what its not a fast car it gets the job done!! People are so obsessed with speed that's why people get speeding tickets so much!!
My Dodge Grand Caravan is in the shop -- again -- and my warranty program includes a rental car during long repairs. The car I was given is a Nissan Versa hatchback. I am 6'4"/295 -- a big guy -- and I have to say that I have more room in this little car than I do in my Grand Caravan. I am so impressed with this little car, that I am seriously thinking of switching!! There's even AMPLE room in the back seats!!! I am really impressed.
Rented the hatchback. It felt planted to the road like a honda accord and the driving and steering reminded me of the toyota corolla. Even the wife enjoyed riding in it to the beach.
I have the yaris 2012 with a 1.5L vvt-i engine and from 0 to 60 it take me way less then 15 sec LOL!This review is underrated!
At 55 mph, I'm getting 46 MPG in my Versa. At 70, I'm averaging 42 MPG. Not bad at all. I wanted a Kia Rio, but the dealerships know they have a hot econo car and weren't willing to budge much on price. I would have ended up paying MORE and getting less (roll up windows and such).
Thanks for the nice words about the videos. We enjoy your comments
@tylers1800 Thanks for the suggestion, we've added it to our list.
@chicoloco341 That's for the suggestion. We'll do on the next mashup video.
The Nissan Versa is a winner on paper & in real life, durability, economic and it has a good price tag. ( it is actually has a heritage way back to the Datsun B210 ).
Good work !
I bought a 2012 Yaris, 2 door base model with the five speed. I am very happy with the car. Now I probably wouldn't want one in an automatic like the one tested, but it is fun to drive with the five speed plus it gets great gas mileage usually 38 city/highway combined, 40-42 on the highway.
I really enjoy watching y'alls videos. Keep up the good work!
@datpimpinboy NO the Koreans don't say they get 40 MPG, the EPA says the car gets 40 MPG on the highway and in real life on the highway that's what the car gets. Just because you don't like the outcome of the review, that doesn't mean you can change the facts to support friends car. Both the Yaris and Versa are using yesterday's technology when it comes to the engine compare to a direct injected engine in the new KIA's and that's why the EPA says the cars only get 35 and 38 MPG on the highway.
Just a matter of opinions I heard different stories from different people about the Nissan Versa. I have one and it performs quite well.
You must be a salesman. And a bad one.
+Tom Brooks - Fucktard talking shit again, I see.
Toby Miles You're about 4 months too late oh quick one.
Toby Miles Does your mom know you use that language? I recommend you do a couple things for yourself. Go finish high school, learn some decent self respect. Learn how to communicate with others beyond a 4 letter vocabulary, and learn that life is not just about yourself. Maybe then you will actually contribute to making this world a better place for yourself and others.
Toby Miles Don't make me repeat myself. You better reread what I said until it sinks in.
Is the Yaris any better with the five speed manual? Is the five speed manual a good choice?
I like the Versa's styling and roominess
I pick the Versa just because of it's rear seat leg-room, but I wish they'd make it a hatchback.
How about the Honda Fit?
I bought the 2014 Versa with the 5 speed manual. It isn't fast, but I am averaging 42 mpg in all around driving! Also this car retails at $12000, the cheapest economy car available. It seats 4 adults comfortably, and has a huge trunk. I did take the Versa for three laps at Road America, and while it is not a GTR, it did handle it pretty well. The traffic jam behind me might have disagreed!!
If u had 4 adults in that car you would probably blow the engine.
+Tom Brooks - Fucktard talking shit again, I see.
TFLC has a later video where they take the Versa Note - same engine, transmission, and platform - up the Ike Grade at higher elevation in Colorado. It made it. On the other hand I just watched one of their videos going up the same grade (or just before the grade) where they blow up the fan (viscous coupled) on a 2017 truck towing another truck on a trailer bed. YMMV.
your reply was the best, most humorous I have read. Thanks for the laugh and truth about what the car was designed for.
i rented a versa last august for two weeks, had no problems, was able to carry three full size and a family of four which includes three adults farely comfortabe for over 100 mile to transport our daughter to college. spent a lot of time on the highway and had no complaints
The 4 speed auto and the 3 door for the price of a 4 door is what's making the Yaris such a hard car to push out the dealer's lot.
Who is here in 2024 realizing what an amazing car the 2012 Yaris turned out to be? Probably will last longer than this review.
Guys, are you seriously comparing these ECONOMY cars to a GT-R??? That's like comparing a Cavalier to a Corvette. You DO understand the difference, don't you? No one buys an economy car for speed, so spending so much time to run 0-60 tests, shows that you don't even grasp this basic fact. Your "review" misses the mark by miles.
I have a 2014 2.0L Jetta - yeah the no variable timing, 115hp edition that's been around forever - and it does just fine with freeway merges. As did every other car I've owned, including the former generation Yaris. IMHO, the main difference in real world situations is the noise level when you go to 3/4 or full throttle - more powerful cars don't break a sweat and make it look easy, while high mpg cars make it plain they are working hard. But to me that's efficiency - sip gas mileage in commutes, work hard up a steep hill or on a freeway merge. So long as I feel safe and keep speed, I'm happy and just ignore the engine roaring. They are designed, once broken in, to hold relatively high RPM safely for a long time.
i think a honda fit review is in order... not that it would tell anyone what they shouldn't already know. i'd just like to see more people angry about hearing it again. the fit is the shit! great reviews guys, thanks!
Good video, it would be cool if at the end of the video you could put up a side by side list of things like MSRP, MPG, 0-60 that you already talked about just to sum it up side by side =]
i rented a 4 door yaris for as week . i'm 6'1 220 and was impressed all around .
Strange that neither mentioned that the Toyota Yaris for the last several years has been a Mazda2 with Toyota insignias.
you should do a Suzuki SX4 review to
Do you really think the versa is unsafe? hahaha the chassis was reinforced to absorb inpact in both sides rear and front so you can be protected all times and it has so many air bags that to my is funny when you say the versa is unsafe.
The Koreans advertise 40mpg but people have been having problems meeting those ratings. It's all for looking good on paper.
The hatch is based on an older design, the new hatch is not available yet but it will probably be available with the 1.6 liter.
The Europeans imo are now making the best small cars, Fiesta, Focus, Polo, Golf, Opel, Peugeot, Renault and those stylish DS Citroens!!
i wish it was hatchback vs hatchback or the sedan vs sedan but this works too
Look at those awesome burnouts and side-slides at the end! That Versa is powerful!
Oh, they're driving on snow.
@datpimpinboy I averaged 31.6 mpg in a 2012 KIA Rio5 over 500 miles. My average in the new Versa is 30.1 mpg over a similar series of routes. That's still a good result, but it still falls short of the KIA. Thanks for watching!
I want to see Nathan wear an AMC shirt. Gotta represent! AMC!!! Bringing it back!
Maybe because they like making fun reviews and not completely boring ones? Props for making an amusing review of some of the most boring cars available.
the yaris is proven.
Actually the trend has changed. Modern sport cars such as Ferrari, BMW, Porsche etc use dual clutch transmissions which are automated.
It must suck that even "fast" cars are slow. You don't get the full enjoyment of 0-60 cause you live or test at such a high altitude you don't get the benefits of the hp. I agree with you guys, it seems that the Japanese have gotten complancent, these cars would be good maybe 5 years ago but that's the problem. Toyota got lazy and still has an engine that is 12 years old (minor tweeks here and there). Yaris sales are strong now but that's cause its new. We'll see. Good review.
Economy cars are for mpg not speed.
totally review the fit. it is a hands down winner in the compact segment.
In Europe you've got a wider range to choose. We're going to buy the Yaris 1.3 cvt, great car! Better than the European and Korean cars. We've just sold a new Fiesta because of problems wich couldn't been solved. My Yaris diesel is a great car too. The mileage on paper is not the best but in reality it is! Toyota has a better mileage in reality than many other cars.
Elevation makes a big difference. I live in Houston Texas (about 100 feet above sea level) in my versa I hit 60mph in 9.5 seconds.
Nissan Sunny 2012 = Nissa Versa 2012 = Nissan Almera 2012 . Depends on the country but they are all the same. For more information, do check nissan global website
The Versa literally has no competition for the price when it comes to the base 5-speed model with no power stuff (but does come with a/c standard.) Problem is, once you opt for the automatic, or power stuff, or the 5-door, suddenly it has a lot of competition because the price jumps so much.
where do you guys make these videos? Looks like Reno.
It’s stupid to test economy cars for speed performance!
People only buy these little cars for 2 basic reasons, cost and efficiency. The Versa wins on both accounts. For what I paid for my Versa SV, I would have only gotten role up windows and manual locks in a smaller Yaris hatch. I also get OVER 40mpg on the highway.
The versa is like the original vw, pinto, chrystler k car, Yugo, ect ect. when you compare these 2 to the others I have mentioned they fair quite well.
Haha I love my Versa! It's definitely an excellent highway commuter car for really tall people. Not a performance vehicle though...not at all. I'll take the better gas mileage over extra horses.
I have a 2008 Yaris, but never owned anything more 'sporty'. On paper, the new 2012 Yaris has a lot more features I think I'd like, but it keeps getting heavier. I feel quite comfortable on the highway, but if the fuel economy is slipping: what's the point of either of these cars?!
I bould buy the versa in australa where I live it is called tiida and Nissan is running it out after six years I loved the tiida so much I bought two of them
renault is a french vehicle. nissan is a japanese vehicle... if you know how to read.....!
How sad is it that my 2012 GTI with a stage 2 tune has 275 hp and 315 Ib ft of torque and does around 25 mpg city and 34 hwy while a Versa or a Fit does only 3-4 mpg while it does about 10 seconds slower 0-60? Is that extra 3-4mpg of the Fit and Versa worth it?
The Yaris is rated 38 mpg highway, your thinking of the Sonic at 35. Id rather have the sonic and its awesome 1.4t engine. Up there it would still put out about the same performance as down close to sea level.
farhan chowdhury its worth it. VWs known for electrical problems, well new VWs rather
Please do a mashup of the 2013 Ford Edge Limited vs. 2013 Toyota Venza Base V6
I don't think the Versa is that ugly, especially compared to the last sedan
Oops...sell all day long but I think they forgot about the Yaris and Nissan didn't even give the Versa any pep which is why people love Nissan.
I hate when automakers redesign a car but keep the same engine and drivetrain. I'd rather have a Toyota Matrix cause they are bigger and get just as good of mileage as the Yaris. I got just over 800 km on a tank on a rental Matrix.
i like the room of the car. However, i would go with the S and the 5 speed instead of the CVT you were stuck with.. Interior quality does not get better, and thankfully AC is standard on all trims.
but 38 inches of legroom in the back is damn impressive!!
I dont get this review, I have an old 02 mk1, 1.3 yaris, it does 36 mpg city and does 0 to 60 in 10 seconds.
Why would this be?
I have a 2008 Yaris and I will not buy another Toyota. The interior is toy like plastic safety rating are the lowest in class, I have a one and a half star side impacted rating. Toyota dealers will lie about the numerous recalls. I am going to buy a Nisson or Honda next time.
Where are you getting these safety ratings.... If they actually were lying, which I doubt, you should have told your attorney general....
Shut your trap and have fun with your ford.
BTW, variable timming valve helps the performance! Like Hondas V-Tec...
Unfortunatly you guys do make some errors quite frequently for professional car reviewers.
If the car has a CVT or any other sort of slush box, then no that's not true at all. The only automatics that are comparable would be a dry clutch automatic transmission which is really kinda sorta a manual transmission but with computers actuating the clutch. The reason why autos can't compare with manuals is because manuals don't need an oil pump for the transmission. The only reason autos would get better gas mileage on the EPA test is because the ratios on the M/T are higher.
Well, the honda fit is called the honda jazz in the UK
Except in today's modern world you can get a car such as the VW GTI with a stage 2 tune that can do 0-60 in a flat 5 seconds instead of 15 seconds with epa mpg estimates of 25 city and 35 hwy.
I dont know what mpg is but in thailand they are called the nissan almera i could 25km per liter av. around 16-20km pee liter
Why do you keep bringing up the gtr?? WTH were you expecting?
No, the Yaris is definitely better looking and a slightly faster car. However everything else is wrong with the Yaris and that's why it loses. I didn't really see too much bias in their review at all. Yaris is probably a better driver's car but if you care to bring people with you, then you'd definitely want a Versa instead.
@Slimecrazy234 Yep. And the Japanese have always been claiming low 30s and their cars tended to get over 40. So something is not right in the way the EPA is testing cars.
This is an unreliable evaluation of both cars. But specially for the nissan versa. One of them even trying to compare a subcompact economy car with "his porsche". If you want a solid evaluation I would suggest the nissan versa review "in the drivers seat" which is also available in youtube.
No Korean compact cars can achieve 40 mpg at the moment.
Old hip13 youre right man even at the end of the commercial they are having so much fun with the versa I think the versa is for people that don't care about looks or alot of speed because at the end you are not a fucking nascar pilot and you need a good and safe Commute versa was made for average not wealthy smart person.
If Toyota adds a CVT to the Yaris, it would make it a very economical machine. Until then, I'd get a manual.
They did
i drive a versa 2012 and its nothing like these guys describe it
Kesell Macias.EXACTLY there full of ST, my versa accelerates frim 0-60 with 6 secs and in top of that it will keep up @ 100mph!
its funny how the manager of this channel instead of being nice to people is always like hating on viewers o.o
can u guys please do Tahoe vs. Expedition
Good video, however, I believe that was not the best choice of Versa. Example, the hatchback model is a 1.8liter and not a 1.6liter. As far as styling goes the Hatchback vs the sedan versa has better looks. Your going to like the yaris hachback over the versa sedan, come on guy's. I'm a nissan person and even i hate the sedan model. So in all fairness i would put the versa 4dr hatchback against the yaris 4dr hatchback and see who wins.
My dad has a 2012 Versa HB & my gf has a 2013 Versa Sedan SL & I used to have a 2012 Yaris 3dr L so I have plenty of experience w/both vehicles. The Toyota has no dead pedal, which is annoying all the time, needs constant course correction all the time, the engine is pathetic and transmission is dimwitted & slow, interior is as barren as it gets and flimsy. That being said ANYTHING is better than the Versa. Toyota just drives better. Yaris > Versa. I just upgraded to 2013 Kia Rio5 EX & love it!
in addition, also same as Nissan Tiida, but can anyone tell me why they need to change the name in different country??-__-
Who the hell tries out these cars? 1st off who in their right mind tests 0-60 in an automatic? I got a 2007 Yaris h/b and it does around 8.5-9sec 0-60. Dunno where the hell these mags get an 11sec time. Hell I clocked in 17.1 @ 1/4 mile while missing 2nd gear and that was STOCK!! A 10 sec 0-60 car doesn't even do 18secs in the 1/4 mile.
No disrespect to our Japan auto makers for we All Know Camry's sel
haha my '09 Yaris gets 0-60 in 7 seconds. All stock
What korean car gets 40mpg?
if i really had to pick, id pick neither, ill get a honda fit
Go yaris!!!
They press the pedal doing 0 to 60 like they own the car. Floor it b****
THE VERY BEST TOYOTA YARIS
Korean car that gets 40mpg with direct injected engines? 5:45 obviously that was before the Hyundai marketing fiasco...
The versa is nice for its low price!!!
Hmm Believe it or not, these days many Autos achieve faster times to 60 and better gas mileage than their manual models... It's sad but true.
ive seen the versa get to 0-60 in 10.56 seconds
those guys are killing those tiny cars thats why they didnt go faster
who the hell buys a nissan sub compact? lol might as well go for a toyota if ur gonna get a small car
Manual transmission stupid guys, I have that car and is awesome!!!!!!
