After the civil war the side that lost went and took refugee in the island , today called Taiwan, without admitting defeat nor victory each went their own way declaring they are the real CHina.
Technically, there were '2' civil wars, one before WW2 and one after. During the first one, Taiwan is still under Japanese rule and pretty much the ROC crushed the Commuist Party. After WW2, Taiwan is given back to the ROC. And during the second war, ROC retreated to Taiwan as the still have naval superiority. Amd hence that is why PRC didnt, or striaght up cannot unie ROC during the civil war

it recognises the prc as the only legitimate government of china, and it recognises Taiwan as part of China, so it recognises Taiwan as well as mainland china as the rightful territory of the prc

Same. I agree. The ROC was SOOOOOOOOO much nicer, they only killed 3 million people for protesting while the totally worse PRC killed 300! That is so messed up! and they only ruled as a dictatorship for 95 years while the PRC ruled for 75 years! The PRC is totally so much worse!
