Agreed-Barry had the greatest skill, but he did get trapped behind the line. With Jim, it was like the Deacon said-"that power"-you don't see anybody or even a group of guys pushing him back-the stack is moving forward or going down, usually for a five yard gain. What nearly every fan today overlooks is Brown's speed. I realize there are quite a few guys today that are faster in the forty-wearing shorts, indoors, on artificial turf, with special shoes, and a timer that doesn't start until they leave the blocks. How does that stack up against a guy who reportedly ran a 4.5/40 in full uniform on a grass field, hand timed? Don't know, but I've got $10 against a penny that the guy in football gear wouldn't have to hang his head in shame. I've also read somewhere that Jim Brown is the only NFL player to have ever run a 100 yard dash wearing football shoes and full set of pads in less than 10 seconds. Another big plus-when he had that ball he was plain damn mean/tough-look at some videos where he talks about slamming his fist into the solar plexus of a tackler or his creative use of the so-called stiff arm (really an open handed punch to the head of tacklers). Willie Davis once remarked that all of the running backs, even the big strong fast ones didn't want to get hit and it showed in their faces. The first time he saw Brown, he said to himself-"This guy looks like he wants to kick somebody's a$$. Love Mr. Brown!

biruk121 Barry Sanders was a very great running back. He played on artificial surfaces which enabled him to utilise his unique skills to the maximum. But he wouldn't have excelled to quite that degree had he played in rain, snow and mud on real turf. You simply can't perform acrobatics on a frozen or sodden field, cancelling a lot of offensive advantages. Brown dominated under the harshest conditions while displaying almost superhuman capacities. Both are great. Brown gets my vote.

3 numbers that tell you all you need to know about Jim Brown:
    1. 104.3 yds per game for his career best in history
    2. 5.2 yds/carry that's a 1st down every 2 times he carried the ball-for his career best in history.
    3. And 0(zero)-number of games he missed while being the most marked man in NFL history. Took more cheap shots in piles and after the whistle than any back.
He NEVER ran out of bounds-wanted to punish the man hitting him instead of giving him the edge by going out of bounds.
Brown wore no hip pads or thigh pads-too restrictive and didn't need the protection.
If you still have any doubts as to who was the best, read/listen to what his fellow players said about him-the men that play the game know the truth

Jim Brown & Otto Graham are the only players in pro football history to accomplish all of the following during their career: (1) Play in every scheduled game and lead their team to a winning record in each and every season of their career. (2) Average the equivalent of 1TD ( rush TD = 1 TD / TDP & TDR = 1/2 TD ) per scheduled game for their entire career. (3) Finish their career with a career average of over 5.0 rush Y/A at RB or over 8.0 pass Y/A at QB. These achievements put both of them head & shoulders above all other players in pro football history. In case you are wondering, no other player matched more than one of these 3 accomplishments & Tom Brady matched none (not even in his 1st ten seasons).

mizofan gale sayers was better than Payton but he really only had 4 healthy years like Terrell Davis....I think butkus, sayers and Payton were 3 best players in bears history. I would put reggie white and goober in top 20

Butkus was dirty. Every one of his tackles would be illegal in today’s game. Filthy dirty.

Looking at these highlights, it appears that Jim Brown averaged 20 yards a carry. Not five yards!! Brown possessed every conceivable asset any athlete could be gifted with. With the heart of a Lion. And he did it all in an era riddled with racism and ignorance. Brown literally suffered every stereotype ever heaped on the black man. Then hammered it straight down their racist throats!! There was a cool, restrained dignity in his exploits. It was, "I know I'm better." You know I'm better. Why flaunt it?!" My favorite Brown quote said it all. "If you beat a man physically," he observed. They may not like you. But they will respect you." Just like his brilliant but tragically scarred Syracuse contemporary Ernie Davis. Davis was the victim of cheap shots and illegal hits rarely seen in today's whitewashed game. Like the great Jimmy, he dusted himself off. Then left his tormentors broken in his thunderous wake. To this day Davis is cited as the one back in history that might have been Browns equal. They were mirror images of each other. Most of all in their innate manly dignity. This is why Segragation and Jim Crow existed in the first place. The more gifted a man was. The more he outshone EVERY rival. The more he must be shoved into the background. To not be a constant reminder of their own inferiority. It was the most backhanded compliment any man could be paid. That was Jim Brown's shining legacy. And his equally brilliant friend, Ernie Davis.

In today's game the most Tell-Tale stat for a running back is yards after first hit. You simply can't compare a scat back to Jim Brown.

This story is about JB only. He Barry Sanders was great but Barry Sanders's father told Barry , " you're no Jim Brown"

  • @BigBlack81

If he had ONLY been a blocker. Jim Brown said multiple times that he didn't block as a football player. Had he blocked just a LITTLE, he'd be the greatest of all time. But IMO, he's the greatest pure running back ever. He cannot be the greatest all around football player because he didn't block. This isn't anti-Jim Brown at all, just clarifying something he HIMSELF lamented as the sole flaw of his game. He didn't block.

    • @Mark-sj3xb
      @Mark-sj3xb 5 лет назад

And that’s why he’s not the GOAT. He never blocked a guy. How can you be the GOAT if you never blocked anyone? That’s why Payton was the GOAT

Ray Lewis was a great, great player. However, with all due respect, he never saw Jim Brown play football. He was too young to remember Jim. You should get a contemporary of Jim to make comments; not somebody that has no memory, and is just speaking hearsay. Jim Brown had been retired for nearly 10 years when Ray Lewis was born. He’s Jim Brown’s friend, but he’s not a credible witness for the reason I stated.

Ray wasn’t even born when Jim played. The former was born on May 15, 1975and the latter played from 1957-1965. You do the math!
