Please, never take this video down. So many emotions are revolving in and around this song that I keep coming back to it. This particular duet is the best version of this song anywhere, ever.
Been listening to this for over 10 years and heart melts everytime I hear the sweet sounds of my mountains back homes. I love the west coast but my heart will always be in the Appalachians cause that's where my soul was born!!
Check out "what a voice" sung by lizzie higgins. Its a Scottish song and the last verse on it is how this version starts. Shows the progression of the song.
Just fantastic. I was born in California but way back when my family came from Ireland into Appalachia and these types of songs will always move me the most.
So nostalgic for a North Carolinian, The Scotch-Irish, German & Cherokee blood runs deep here. If you were born here pre-1970's, this is the music you grew up with.
I wish, I wish my baby was born And sittin' on its papa's knee And me, poor girl, and me, poor girl, were dead and gone And the green grass growin' o'er my feet I ain't ahead, nor never will be 'Till the sweet apple grows On a the sour apple tree But still I hope, but still I hope the time will come When you and I shall be as one The owl, the owl is a lonely bird It chills my heart with dread and terror That someone's blood, that someone’s blood There on his wings That someone's blood There on his feathers I wish, I wish my love had died Send her soul to wander free And we might meet where ravens fly Let our poor bodies rest in peace
Riley Baugus and great musicians like him are one of the reasons I LOVE living in North Carolina. You can't go anywhere here without hearing great bluegrass.
Just beautiful fellas. I live in The woods in KY and grew up writing music for the same reasons you do I'm sure..it spills out of the land. No matter what ills and troubles come..we get together and sing and play the stories of sorrows and triumphs the land gives us. This touches my heart.
@@TimEriksenMusicVideo At the risk of sounding ignorant what instruments are you guys playing? My vision is poor and my musical ability even worse! I really appreciate you responding! This song sticks with me and in my opinion is the sound of America
Tim, I must tell you, you truly are one of my musical Heroes. I first discovered you when I was living in Northampton and someone gave me a copy of Cordelia's Dad- Comet. Since then my admiration for your talent, voice and soul has only grown. Thank You.
I had the privilege to talk with Riley Baugus a few years back when he was on tour with Dirk Powell and his cajun band "Balfa Toujours" here in Sweden . I spoke with hin briefly after the concert. Such a nice and warm hearted guy!! He even let me try his banjo!!
Thanks for the note- I appreciate it, and I'm glad you're enjoying the music. Up here in "northern Appalachia" the old music is a little different, but it seems like there's some kindred spirit...
That is a a beautiful song. I'm a big fan of "old timey" mountain music. Part of its beauty is its simplicity - the harmony in this song is its icing. I wish Tim would come play in Knoxville TN some day. We have the Tennessee theater which would be an excellent venue.
Thank you our Lord Jesus for such beautiful spirits in these two men. I have loved this song from the 1st moment I heard it and I never thought I could love it more until now. I have the biggest smile on my face right now. Gentelmen, may God bless you all the days of your life.
I too heard this song and loved something about it.my family came from the hills as evident in our speach long before anyone can remember or cares to but still stirs some deep sadness that can be explained.
Cold Moubtain is so underrated. Love the concert at UCLA ob dvd extras. I bought this soundtrack before the movie came out and listened to it on repeat while I was waiting in line for Return of the King haha
AN Exclamation would be out of line..... My grandma sang this to me in the mid 50's, Our family in Ohio is in awe of anyone who can sing this with such emotion and accuracy...... TO our extended family in Buffalo Creek West Virginia we love and miss all of you..... and think of mamaw and pawpaw daily...... GOD BLESS YOU GUYS FOR THIS MUSIC
Hey, thanks so much for your note. I guess there's a lot of folks in Ohio whose roots are further south and east. Mine are all a bit to the north, but music has a way of bringing us to the same place I think.
one of my favourite songs ever, use to humming it when driving back home after a hard day! plus, it remenbers me when I lived in the US - VW! Cheers from Brazil Mr. Eriksen.
Yeah, that's me. Thanks so much for the nice note! And yes, Cassie Allen surely is a beautiful singer- like so many Sacred Harpers but also totally unique.
I meant just that we recorded it for the film. The first two verse are, indeed, old, while the last two were made up by our dear departed friend Anthony Minghella. Riley and I both thought they were kind of lame at first, but came around to appreciating Anthony's poetic take on things. (I think I can speak for Riley on that, but you should ask him as he surely has his own take on it.)
my life has been, as I'm sure it has for many, one long musical journey. as I go along I always discover something new, after all the years. it started with what was on the radio, and I swore off music completely. but when I was about 4 or 5, I was turned onto 90s grunge by my brother, and classic rock by my parents and their friends, and I realized what music was about. the next 20 years were discoveries mostly within those genres or stemming from them, but a few years ago I was introduced to folk music, which led to anarcho folk punk, back to folk, and finally to whatever you call this strange form of perfection. life has been different for me, not altogether good or bad. not easy. In all the music I listened to, I related to some extent but always felt there was this thin veil, this small bit of a lack of understanding between myself and the words I was hearing. there was one emotion that was missing that I still don't have a word for. but I found it when I stumbled upon these tunes. Appalachian music? mountain music? the name doesn't matter for me. as far as I am concerned my musical journey was meant to lead me here. and I'm grateful for it.
I love to hear some beautiful music on some handmade instruments from NC keep the Appalachian spirit alive, your music touches my soul, please don't ever stop.
being a hillbilly from east ky, this music runs in our blood. Im all over the plae musicly but this brings me home, no matter where i may be. Best version iver heard. I saw the movie again recently and this song choked me up. Its hard to believe tim erikson isnt a hillbilly as well. guess it just goes to show you, this music though frommy part of the world isnt exclusive. Beautiful music is beautiful music. Well done, brothers
Hey Shawn- I'm glad you're enjoying the song! Yeah, it's small part of a great tradition. I'm more of an elite-small college town-New-England-billy, but like you said...music. I'm pretty tired of the things that are supposed to divide us.
your voices and that sound is and will always be viable and relevant. the heart that hears it will always respond and come alive to your voices. especially in the SOUTH. rest assured, my friend. Timeless....
I watch and listen to this Video every day. I wish I could play my Banjo with such empathy and be gifted with similar vocals. Soulful, haunting and absolutely brilliant. Many thanks. STP
Great song!! Love the sound of that banjo--it's got a lot of projection for a mountain banjo. I'd be curious to know what kind of sound holes he has there.
Please, never take this video down. So many emotions are revolving in and around this song that I keep coming back to it. This particular duet is the best version of this song anywhere, ever.
What he said 🙂🖕
I’m with you Stroman. Checking back in after years away from this video…. Maybe a decade. Needed this tonight.

This song is real music sitting on the porch and making sweet music ✌️❤️

This is who we are. America the Beautiful is more than just broad vistas and beautiful landscapes. This music is our original Soul.
North Carolina from the womb to the tomb. The rest of my life is not enough time to enjoy this song, i want it played at my funeral as well!
One of my favorite videos hands down.
Just fantastic. I was born in California but way back when my family came from Ireland into Appalachia and these types of songs will always move me the most.
Very moving for me too.

Best version on RUclips... Just sounds raw n rustic
Thank you I looked for the non movie version of this song it's so beautiful ❤️
Yeah man, that's got that sound. That high lonesome sound. Thank you gentleman for giving us a dose of your wisdom and soul.
I wish, I wish my baby was born
And sittin' on its papa's knee
And me, poor girl, and me, poor girl,
were dead and gone
And the green grass growin' o'er my feet
I ain't ahead, nor never will be
'Till the sweet apple grows
On a the sour apple tree
But still I hope, but still I hope
the time will come
When you and I shall be as one
The owl, the owl is a lonely bird
It chills my heart with dread and terror
That someone's blood, that someone’s blood
There on his wings
That someone's blood
There on his feathers
I wish, I wish my love had died
Send her soul to wander free
And we might meet where ravens fly
Let our poor bodies rest in peace

The last verse says "his soul" not "her soul" just fyi. Feel free to check the official lyrics. Also you can clearly hear it.
I love this down home version of this song and it's great to hear both these instruments played in a traditional style.
One of the greatest songs ever imo.
a song I will listen to until I die

I've listened to this song more than a few times and I like it more every time I hear it. Thanks Tim and Riley.
I particularly fell in love with this song when I heard it for the first time on Cold Mountain. Such a great film

This is the best song ever written and by far the best video here on you tube, love you two guys together
Pretty sure at least half these views are me, listening over and over. So much love for this song!
Thanks for the note- I appreciate it, and I'm glad you're enjoying the music. Up here in "northern Appalachia" the old music is a little different, but it seems like there's some kindred spirit...
now this is SOUL music!
Takes me back to West Virginia and SW Pennsylvania--coal miner country--years long gone by. Thanks for the lovely music.

Tim, Your video style is all over this with the short walk around the garden and the zoom on the bees at the end. Nice playing and singing with Riley.
So incredibly beautiful. Thank you
This is such a beautiful song. ❤
This is crystallized beauty. As pure, natural and honest as music gets. Thank you for posting it. I've listened many times.
