    oh finally someone said this! light is so calm and calculating for a sociopath, i hate when people call him a sociopath due to his ''impulsive'' behavior. he may have a few reckless moves but psychopaths can be reckless at times. though, i wouldn't say he's necessarily impulsive, just the opposite he's as cold as can be.
    i guess people just doesn't like to think about details... although those details usually reveal so much about characters.

      @@msmarbs you're right. besides, sociopathy isn't an official term according to dsm-5. there are 2 types of ASPD: primary psychopathy and secondary psychopathy. secondary psychopathy is commonly known as sociopathy. according to dsm-5, primary psychopaths also have the secondary psychopathic traits while secondary psychopaths don't necessarily display the traits of the primary psychopathy. judging by this fact, we can say all psychopaths are also sociopaths, but not all sociopaths are psychopathic. in other words, just because light displays sociopathic behavior doesn't change the fact that he's a textbook psychopath.

      Light Yagami is neither a psycho nor a sociopath, you have seen too many movie stereotypes gentlemen ...
      99% of sociopaths are highly disturbed people with serious social problems, of little success and prone to violence and impulsiveness, psychopaths are colder but still robotic to a careful eye, they do NOT know how to feel any emotion, they are NOT afraid, they are NOT they ask what's best for the world.
      Light is different, Light suffers from a Macchiavellian personality disorder and some traits of sub-clinical sociopathy, malignant narcissism and messiah complex, but he is by no means a psychopath or a sociopath, if he had been they would have taken a lot. long before, never ever would a psychopath have the ability to simulate so well and maintain such perfect social skills over the long term.
      Let's go by points:
      1) When Light killed the first person he passed days of extreme psycho-physical stress, irrefutable proof of EMPATHY and FEAR OF BEING WRONG, this alone is enough to refute the theory of the psychopath.
      (I could stop here but ...)
      2) Light has very strong turbulent feelings, he loves and hates L, he has affection for his father (yes the father's death scene was not a play for many reasons, but I don't have time to dwell on it), he has a crazy obsession to confirm himself as just and good, he goes crazy only at the idea of being bad, a psychopath does not ask himself the ethical problem.
      3) When Light loses his memories he presents himself as a proud person, iron in his black / white morality but with empathy, he loses control when L tells him that he is depressed and no longer wants to commit to saving lives .. .
      reconfirmation of the fact that Light has EMPATHY.
      4) Light KNOWS what he does, he is aware that killing is wrong, but he is obsessed with his "divine" goal, a psychopath is not aware of the harm he does, he does not realize that he is a murderer.
      (now you could tell me that a sociopath knows what he does, so Light could be) ...
      5) ... but no, he is not in the least sociopathic, too self-controlled, too social, too charismatic.
      So Light is a narcissistic multiple murderer, with the God complex, and an evident Macchiavellian personality disorder, some symptoms are not enough to define a psychopath or a sociopath, it takes all.

      @@johndelanoatompunk1153 i agree that light is a machivallian with hubris syndrom. but other than this, he displays many psychopathic triats. first of all, he is reckless and fearless. fearlessness and shallow emotions are psychopathic qualities. remember his first intrection with ryuk, he screamed for a second but quickly put himself together. that wasn't a normal human reaction nor a machivallian's reaction. that was someone's reaction who lacks fear, anxity etc...
      apart from this, light displays the characteristics of the dark triad personality.
      he is noticeably narcissistic, his megolomaniac personality and god compex make it very obvious. he believes he's special and has a sense of entitlement.
      he is unarguably a machivallian. he's cold, calculating, manipulative and oppurtunistic.
      he is almost certainly a psychopath. he had no qualms about getting rid off people, even including innocents. he doesn't show any sign of remorse or empathy. in fact, he completely lacks emotional empathy and conscience.

  • @laurenmungaray3912
    @laurenmungaray3912 3 года назад +4

    I think he has OCD and bipolar disorder. He wants everything to be P.E.R.F.E.C.T, go according to his plan, if it doesn't go according to his plan he has a panic attack. Light's symptoms for Bipolar Disorder:
    when he expresses his emotions he explodes, *coughs* grandiosity , apathy ( in the beginning), delusions, irritability, disorganized behavior ( his acting in the scene where L died, the scene where he first laughs manically, the last episode he feels like laughing when he thinks everyone is going to die, and his last evil laugh scene, and smiling at dying L. I bet there's more ).

    • @msmarbs
      @msmarbs  3 года назад +3

      I’d kind of like it if you expanded on your point on him having bipolar disorder. Yes, he shows signs of delusions of grandeur, irritability and somewhat disorganized behavior but they can also be symptoms of many other disorders like narcissistic personality disorder, schizophrenia or even paranoia. I think your forgetting the 2 main signs that point to bipolar disorder, mania and depression. The depressive episodes can span for a long period of time (months) and the manic episodes are usually for shorter period of time (up to 1 week or more depending on whether it is type I or II).
      For one, Light is definitely not depressed during any point of the story. He never shows signs of being suicidal, tired, hopeless, insomniac, or difficulty concentrating etc., the list literally goes on. You can argue that maybe at the start of the anime, but I’d say more apathetic than depressed. So we can definitely surmise that the story doesn’t take place during his depressive episode. Or he would’ve shown signs.
      You said that he shows signs of delusions, grandiosity, irritability, and disorganized behavior. These signs are usually only expressed during a manic episode. As I’ve said before, a manic episode doesn’t last very long usually around a week and I can confirm that the story doesn’t take place during the mere span of a week. Also, despite expressing delusions of grandeur and irritability. He doesn’t really have any other symptoms of a manic episode, maybe except for laughing at inappropriate times. Light doesn’t make rash decisions that have not been thought through, he’s not hearing voices (Ryuk doesn’t count), he’s not having racing thoughts or continuously jumping from one idea to another. Or easily getting distracted. Considering all these factors, L would’ve caught him in an instant if that was the case. So, I’m pretty positive he doesn’t have bi-polar disorder.

    • @msmarbs
      @msmarbs  3 года назад +3

      I don’t think he has OCD either I’m pretty sure Light panicking when things don’t go his way ties more into his delusions of grandeur. In his mind, he’s the “God of the New World” and the fact that humans are outsmarting a quote on quote “God” is bruising his ego.
      But I’m not the most informed on Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, so I’ll check into that and get back to you.

    I think that one major event that made people think that Light is a psychopath is when he gets baited by L when a fake shows at TV. Light clearly overreacted whereas a psychopath would probably have kept his cool. Since it is a very memorable event and since most ppl stop before the last ep of the anime, they don't get to see the whole portrait of Light. Yet another problem is that the psychopath is actually Kira, Light isn't necessarily a psychopath himself, he could be a very classic and (hyper)sensitive teen as well as a psychopath who plays his role perfectly. Yet we have no real proof that Light Yagami (the gentle boy) is a psychopath, a sociopath or simply a highly succesfull and appreciated boy due to his agreeableness and openness.
    Another problem with the idea of "life events" creating sociopath is that it is not that much of a determining factor in some movies like the new "Joker" where Arthur is claimed to be a psychopath (which seems correct for most of the traits) but again is foggy in some details of the movie as far as i'm concerned. Arthur isn't famous nor is he appreciated in any way, he kind of loses his tact too (Murray shooting scene). If we pay close attention to the surroundings of Arthur, he sort of has everything in common with a sociopath in this new movie (loses his job, anger, rejected, alone and bullied, "hanging out" with colleagues that are malevolent asf). What seems to legitimate his "psychopathy" is his illness that kind of reminds me of the "born" aspect that u talked about psychopathy. Now, I have to finish this case with the ackowledgement of the fact that Heath Ledger made the Joker look like a real psychopath in the movie "The Dark Knight" and on this point i admit 100% he is a psychopath. Having watched "We need to talk about Kevin", i doubt even more that Arthur Fleck is a psychopath.
    I do understand why there are still debates about Kira since he has traits of both sociopath and psychopath. Now him losing his mind when getting outplayed by N (and taunted by L on TV) may fall under the name of "minor events" that do not really fit his casual nature. But once again, where he can keep a job for 6 years straight and be called a psychopath, Arthur can't even keep a job for a year.
    Finally, i've come onto some topics brought here and there on Quora and one comment emphasized the fact that antisocial disorders (psychopathy and sociopathy) aren't stereotypes (featuring traits set in stone) but rather spectrums with individuals more or less close to the stereotypes. Thus, there can be sociopaths who look like psychopaths because they are calculating things just like psychopaths would do, just as another sociopath could go and get a job before being fired 5 minutes later. It would probably be more enlightening if we had the genetic information of Kira (and/or Light). If we accept this idea of spectrum then we can understand why there are incoherences between Arthur and Kira. I doubt a S-tier movie like the new Joker would overlook the use of words like "psychopath" and "sociopath" so there is a great chance that Arthur is a psychopath, yet few incoherences arise (listed above). If we had to rank the two Jokers and Kira i'd say that the Dark Knight was the most coherent representation of a psychopath, then comes Kira and last Arthur Fleck who almost look like a sociopath.
    Liked the video tho it was nice to see a analysis of it.

      Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it. I haven’t watched Joker, (that’s literally a crime) but I plan on watching it soon. So, I can’t comment on their portrayal of psychopathy. But, I definitely agree with you when you say that we’re in an Era where we can’t completely stereotype psychopaths and sociopaths. Nowadays, there’s so many exceptions and it really blurs the line. Researching for this video was a pain in the ass, anti-social personality disorders are so hard to wrap your head around. Even now I’m still learning 😅
      The point you made about Light overreacting when L pretended to reveal himself, completely flew over my head. Like I literally forgot about that 😅

      @@msmarbs Diagnosing anti-social disorder isn't that hard but discriminating between psycho and socio is definitely a challenge for most cases. I do believe it is sometimes easier to present stereotypes than to create an entire character in movies, specially when it comes to using scientific terms. Now one good point is : ppl don't give a fuck if any character is a socio or a psycho, once the char gets in trouble and plans on killing ppl, that's a anti-social individual. Things were easier when horror movies presented psychopaths as stereotypes, just like it is done with Mickael Myers in "Halloween".

      Thank youu so much!! I’m glad you did. And to answer your question, yes in the case of a sociopath. It’s definitely possible but it’s pretty rare and less likely. However, you also must remember that the sociopath isn’t necessarily always abused, he/she is a product of their environment.
      However, in the case of a narcissist, they must be traumatized or abused; physically, mentally or emotionally. That’s what’s tragic about the narcissist, because they wear a mask of grandiosity etc., to hide their true selves. To hide their feelings of insecurity, low self of stem etc. which stemmed from the trauma or abuse.

      Contrary to popular belief, psychopaths do have a clear distinction of right from wrong. They’re aware of what’s morally acceptable in society. That’s why they’re able to blend into society so well. If they didn’t know right from wrong what’s stopping them from saying this in regular conversation. “I had a rough day today, I just had killed a woman and had to chop her body up and flush it down the toilet. Now it’s clogged.” Psychopaths know what’s right they just don’t have any regard for the consequences.
      I’m probably not explaining it properly, but I remember reading an experiment scientists carried out to investigate their morality. Do you want me to send you the link?
