12:00 I think I read somewhere or saw a video that said Avatar Yangchen the Airbender Avatar before Aang could in fact produce a bending assisted sonic scream powerful enough to deafen people at close range and create powerful blasts of wind.
Indeed, she could create powerful sonic screams or something akin to that, yeah. Or at least that's what I heard as well. Which is totally fine and wouldn't surprie me at all, but the issue is that she was the Avatar of her time, so as the Avatar she'd HAVE the ability to that for sure. My proposal of the "gong" was moreso for any regular Airbender, a technique that they could use pretty freely as soon as they can learn it. At least, I'm assuming you were referring that, correct?
@@worldbuildingfilms507 Because The Earth Kingdom is so massive, their earthbending masters use directional geomancy. They use special bone trigrams to divide the Kingdom in half, ruling one half out based on how the bones fall. Then they do it again and again, cutting the number of possible locations for the Avatar in half repeatedly until they narrow it down to a single spot. The Fire Nation has the Fire Sages. In the past, when they were much closer to the spirits, they could read people's auras and identify the Avatar that way. In current times, they do bone fortunetelling by burning inscribed bones and reading the resulting fissures: sound familiar to a certain character? The Water Tribes' one is implied, but given little information and not directly stated: the sages gave Kuruk some sort of special glowing crystal and it rose into the air under his command.
@@worldbuildingfilms507 Yep, the Earth Kingdom one was a subtle plot point in the first Kyoshi novel (her parents were outlaws and kept moving around with her, so she wasn't found. When they got desperate enough to try the Air Nomad method instead, Kyoshi didn't finish the test, because she had been abandoned and neglected and was distrustful of people. This lead to a whole mess where they falsely identified someone else because the era was super chaotic and they desperately needed a new Avatar.) The Water Tribe one is briefly mentioned in a flashback about Kuruk in the second Kyoshi novel. But again, unlike with the other ones I mentioned, they don't directly state it's the test. But it's implied: the Water Tribe sages had already suspected Kuruk was the Avatar, gave him the glowing crystal, were pleased when he could lift it up, and then weeks later declared him as the Avatar. The Fire Nation ones are stated in the Roku novel.
I think I can say that this small dot separated from the tattoos of ancient nomads is to represent the last chakra. Something like the tilak to attract good energy and represent the release of the energies of the last chakra or something like that. I agree a lot with your proposals to show the mastery of domination with symbols and titles but I think it could be more complex. Different symbols for different degrees of mastery, like the incomplete moon for someone who reached the first stage of mastery and the full moon with the ocean for the great masters. A dragon-shaped mare or adornment for the youngest masters of fire and the title of dragon would be given to the highest master or whoever killed a dragon proving that he surpassed the original master (my headcannon is that this pointless hunt is so that the royal family or humans would be considered the great masters or something like that). It's actually quite fun to think about this.
Oh do you have a source for the original Air Nomads? I'd like to check it out! I sadly hadn't found much info 😂 Oh yeah, as far as the tatoos go, these are just possible ideas I had for fun, just for the kicks of it, so I'm more than ok with considering other ideas people might have for the other nations! And oh, anything dragon marked would be A-OK in my book. Because, as mentioned before - F*CKING DRAGONS! 😈🐉 (Also, am I assuming you might be from Italy? Because you said "Dominion", and I know for a fact that they're called dominion in the Italian dub. If not I'd be really curious to hear what other countries used that word!)
@@worldbuildingfilms507 It's not really a source, but an inference or association. The nomads have an obvious influence from Tibetan monks, in addition to Chinese elements. Tilak and similar paintings are common in Buddhism, Taoism, and Hinduism, which are the dominant religions in monasteries in these regions. Well, we can use sun tattoos. You know, in addition to the sun warriors, it is the fuel of the firebenders, as well as breathing and motivation. In addition to all the inspiration in Japan and Thailand, the sun is a central figure of worship. I'm actually Brazilian I use the translator, which sometimes fails hahaha. It's easier to leave comments in your native language when I find the content interesting to support.
Oh ok that’s fair then. Well good interpretation as well! Although I wanted to choose another path, because while it’s fine to take inspiration from our real world, we had them for our reasons, and they would have had it for very different socio-cultural reasons, so I figured that realistically they should have had other reasons not tied to what we know 😅 The Sun as a tattoo symbol is a good idea! However it would then go very much against what the fate of the Sun warriors actually was, being secluded and thought to have died off (which I think makes no sense and you can check my video on the Firebenders if you want more details on that, if you haven’t already). If the Fire Nation all used Sun tattoos for them, it would have made getting rid of the Sun warriors culturally much harder. So, it would narratively be best not to tie those two things together, lest you really have to find a super complicated way to explain why they were “wiped out”, especially within the constraints of a kids so that was already putting a lot of effort into pushing boundaries for the time
Temperature bending being related to breathing makes a lot of sense outside of what was said in the video. It was explained in the show that fire bending (which is basically temperature bending) is derived from the breath. So it already in universe has that foundation
Indeed, I figured that if they have this (and it’s more than fair), then something similar could apply to the others. The building blocks were already there
- tattoos: With earth benders that might be difficult. The more if they also can metal bend. As a main ingredient in tattoo ink is based on metals. They might just pull the ink out of themselves. On the other hand they might also be the best to give others tattoos and they can bent it in every way you could imagine. I could however see them wearing ceremonial rings with claws on the fingers. they might even be able to use in combat. like firing the individual claws like a dart. a bit like how the DiLee use there stone gloves but more refined looking. - with the new airbenders the energy helix could be a thing. I can also see it happen that those that are still direct related to Aang and Tenzin will still uphold the old style. in a way creating a division. (that can be a interesting plot for in a farter future) - with the Jing and Yang part. for water benders there basic form already is Jing and Yang. As the moon and ocean spirit are the direct source of the energy it self. In there case I would say the biggest power would be to only use Jing or Yang. Like only act as a extension of the moon spirit and use there own energy to increase the moon energy closer to a full moon. the downside is they them self can not fight or even move. they have to stand/sit still. They can't use the energy them selves but other water benders can.
For the Earthbenders the rings are a good idea. Although the metalbending tattoo thing wouldn’t be possible because metalbending didn’t exist until Toph invented it, so in Korra it can easily be a thing by, but not before. for the double helix, yeah, that’s true, it can open a lot of story possibilities by creating different factions and such! For the Waterbenders, I’m not fully sure if I understood what you meant, sorry. What effects would those be exactly?
@@worldbuildingfilms507 For the Waterbenders. to get the idea. in the basics of book 1 Waterbending it self is based on the powers of Tui and La. there balance is why Waterbenders can bend. my idea is that water specialist. could become La fighters or Tui Defenders. La fighters only use La energy during a battle. A very destructive very hard to control power (like a minor Koizila) Tui Defenders only use the energy of Tui during a battle. So giving other benders on the battle field ether a minor buff in general or more a constant minor healing if covering a area or they could focus that moon energy to heal more directly. La fighters can never become Tui users. Nor can a Tui user become a La fighter. I do take in to account that both users need to be very skilled already and need to train further in there fields to ether maintain control and be able to use ether bending form longer. As always i am a big fan of your approach, where you work very close with the already established canon and deepen some of the elements. Of course some of your ideas are also sometimes bigger changes (and this is not bad!), but i still wanted to say that i like this side of approaching the established worldbuilding. To be honest, i am not a big fan of the Tattoos for all elements, but i can respect the reasoning behind your ideas. How you tied the ancient airbending-tattoos to your idea with the spirit bending was kind of a nice touch. It could be a nice explanation, because i also have never seen another explanation for why they have such a difference. More focus on Breath control in temperature-bending or even bending in general would be perfect, because bending already builds so much on a foundation of martial arts and meditation. Making the different bendings more the same and still retaining an individual difference like you did with the different forms of YING/Yang-techniques is also a nice approach and works pretty well with the mentality of the show, that everything is one thing even with the seperations. Tension years should already be canon i think. It just makes perfect sense! And especially not attacking the nation with the next Avatar seems pretty reasonable. Never really was a fan of how the Spirit world seemed less mysterious and dark in "Korra" and many spirits more... like pokemon or digimon? Okay, but this is probably another thing entierly. Back to the video: Yes, making it a mirror of the collectice of the people living in the material world seems better than making the Avatar to much of a center. Back in the day - as i believe to remember - when there was more of an idea, that the Avatar is a personification of the kosmos, i could stand behind making the Avatar the powerfull center of everything. But with the Avatar being "just" a specific powerfull spirit it makes sense to not go full on god-mode with them. About the movie: Lost all respect for you, my dude! 12 years dungeon without trial for that... Hehehe, this was a joke. Yeah, credit is needed when credit is due and this part of the movie was pretty good as an idea. But as others have mentioned it seems to exist in the canon already some other methods of finding the next Avatar. About Kyoshi: How can one character be such a cool and still well written? I already liked here in the show, but the books made me a full on Kyoshi-fanboy... Favourite Avatar of mine now. It is also funny how here age comes because of an accident in the writers room... Another thing, that i do not know if you will talk about that: Because of the mentioning of the tenthousand years i just wanted to ask what do you thing from the very widespread trope of fantasy worlds being more or less static over many thousand years?
Heyo good sir, always glad to read your comments! 😄 First off, thank you ;) Second, for the tattoos, yeah, I don't claim they would be necessary at all. The Air Nomads got 'em, and that's more than enough, the other nations have other ways to express their cultural identity. It was just for fun speculation Indeed, bending is a full on martial art (despite what Korra implied and showed, but that's another story) and it's easy to build upon it, but since many of them have common ways to expand upon these tecniques, I figured that both temperature bending as well as the Yin Yang Clash could be used by the others as well. Maybe it's not required, but I think they could at least come close, and then they'd all still have their own uniquenesses here and there (for example, bloodbenders are the only ones who seem to have any kind of bending control that has to do with the physical body, I can't recall of instances to the contrary) Yup, the tension years just seem something purely logical more than anything else, so I would love it if one day the creators would one day see these videos, take inspiration, and I can say I left a footprint on this franchise as a whole somehow! Not sure what your pokemon and digimon reference was but ok XD Yes, it's best if it's everyone's collective emotions. Not to mention that if it's all based on the Avatar's only, then all the nations would be too worried at cuddling the Avatar from a young age, lest their ancestors be basically living an eternal hellscape, and we'd end up with a whole lineaology of spoiled Kuzko's, so we can't exactly have that. About the Avatar being originally a sort of center of the cosmos or something like that, vs what Korra said... stay tuned 😏 Oh, if there are other canon methods used in the show that I'm not aware of, by all means let me know! Yup. Kyoshi seems to constantly be accidentally tripping into awesomeness, lol. And yeah I know, they just miscalculated when Kyoshi Island came to be and now it's a canon thing that made her all the more badass XD And on that last part... once again, stay tuned 😎
