This tutorial is a classic stage ballet bun referred to as the "Balanchine Style". I do my hair like this in any ballet that calls for a normal, high bun, such as Sleeping Beauty or the Nutcracker. It gives your head a really beautiful shape from the audience.

Hi Katie! As for suggestions, this one goes for girls like me with long, curly, abundant, and VERY thick hair (also a great idea for girls with LAYERED hair). For years I had problems with my bun because it was very hard to twist and pin in place. And whenever I did, it just looked out-of-center and huge, just not at all flattering or appealing. So I began searching for other easier and faster ways to make my bun (I had to use about 30 minutes of my time just to be sure I could make my bun). And finally I found my perfect ballet bun! So it's actually two buns: First I put half my hair up and secure with a hair tie. I make the first bun with this pony and secure with bobby pins. Next I brush the bottom half of my hair to one side and upwards and twist around the first bun, securing with pins as I go. And finally the hair net. It looks very appealing and can be used as a high, middle, or low bun. NOTE: Much easier to do and looks better when hair is parted down the middle. Thanks Katie!
Whats your hair type
I would love to see an everyday make-up tutorial from you! You always look so elegant!
Thank you!
I never thought there was a specific type of bun, and related to a dance style! Loved it. Thank you
I love Balanchines nutcracker I perform in it every year and I love it!
Omg thanks for this, I'm so happy that I'm not the only one with thin hair. My bun without the extension is like yours and love your tips ! Also, I'm diagnosed with Hashimoto's! Love your work and videos 😍
Thanks so much. I've always admired how this kind of bun looked, and never really learned how to create it. I've also always had trouble with French twists, getting that sleek look with the proper line, tapering down (or enlarging up, depending how you look at it) the back of the head. Maybe having thick, long hair messed me up, but it always seemed if I got the shape right, it would mess up the top front, and vice-versa. So I really appreciate your videos, and thank you.
i've never seen this better explained than here!! thank you so much
I needed this so much!!
Thank you!!!
Loved this!!
I'm always looking for new ways to wear my hair for class! Now i know of another option! Thank you! :)
i love how you just get to the point
Great video! I am going to share this with all of my students and have them save it as a point of reference. Thank you so much!
Will definitely try this out! You have the most beautiful eyes!
Great! I learn something new everyday
You are so lovely to share all these tips with young dancers. I wish I would have had access to these tips back in the day! Keep up the amazing work!
Thank you so much!
Thank you for this! You're so beautiful, talented and helpful.
I'm very interested in how dancers cross train. Every dancer has a different routine that seems to work for them and I know many dancers need to cross train for cardio (aerobic workout vs. non-aerobic ballet class) and also to correct any weaknesses or muscle imbalances. I'd love to know you're routine during the season and off season! Thanks Katheryn :)
Love all your videos! You have amazing advice. Keep making such great videos!!
Ally King Thank you so much!
When you put the hairnet on, I had an 'AHA!' moment. So, THAT'S how they do it! :D
Thank you! Could you do a tutorial on a French twist?
Yes!
This made my bun look 💯
Your channel is amazing! You can share your experience and help other dancers. You are an inspiration! Congratulations from Brazil.
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for posting this video! It's really helpful :)
Thank you!
Thank you so much! This will help me a lot :)
That's great! Thanks Katie!
The only thing for me is the net, I don't really like how it looks up close. So what I usually do is put a little bit of hair gel diluted in water all the way throw my ponytail, so it looks less messy than it would.
xoxo
I can't wait to try this tomorrow for my intensive ballet camp :D. And also can you do like a flexible video telling us how to stretch, get more flexible or just how to maintain our flexibility :D it will really help me a lot. Thanks for this excellent video! :D
So interesting, thankyou!
thank you so much, im starting again next week so i hope i can make this... and wow i need a hair piece too :( my hair is o thin unfortunately ... but you are beautiful :) and thanks for the tips. !!!!!!
could you please do a Giselle bun tutorial!!! Thank you!!! :)
How beautiful! I've never seen a bun explained this way, but I'd love to master it! I have the opposite problem as you, my hair is very long and very thick, and a normal cinnamon bun shape ends up too bulky on my head. I can't wait to try this! Thanks as always!
You are so welcome!
Thanks for the tutorial! Could you do a follow along barre video?
Thankyou so much!
This turned out to be really helpful :D
YOU'RE SERIOUSLY EVERYWHERE XD
Thank you. I shall by some hair to make this nice looking bun.
Kathryn, I just cut my hair and am having trouble putting my hair up (and it's on the thinner side as well). Where can I find hair pieces like this?
Thank you!!! I might not be able to do that because my hair is to LONG!!!!
You're long hair looks beautiful
I would love to see a French twist tutorial. It's really hard for me to do :/
That was very helpful, thank you!!! We would also love to see some videos of you performing, please. :)
Could you do more bun tutorials? Thank you!
Where did you get the fake hair piece??
Could you do like a cool fun type of bun ? Like for when you want you're hair to look fancy for ballet class??
It would be awsome, if you could show how to `create` ballet bun on short hair. I know it involves fake hair bun, but since I cut my hair short I don't really know how to start.
I know it requires a lot of effort and an actual short-hair person, but it would be really helpful.
Anyway, I just wanted to say a big thank you, for all your advices and tips and everything, I am sure I am not the only one pleased with your videos ;)!
can you a video of the clasic bun like the ones of paquita or like the silfides
I really love your channel. I have a suggestion for video 😊 could you do a how to take care of your feet when you are a dancer type video. That would be so helpful, thank you 😃
Yes! And thank you!
What are the wide hair pins you are using called? I had some like them a long time ago but lost them all and am looking to repurchase them but cant find them anywhere online
I almost figured out how to do this last summer at CPYB, but I chopped most of my hair off a few weeks ago and now my bun is so tiny!
Would you say this is a bun that would be appropriate for exams? Thanks
Does anyone know where to get a hairpiece like this? If so, please respond!!
What should I do if my hair is too short for the Balanchine bun
Where did you get your hair piece from ?
do you know any buns on shorter hair?
Hi, I was wondering if you could do a video on SAB's summer course audition? Also, where did you get your hair net?
Sally's beauty supply has good ones and either Target,Walmart, or Tesco's (if you're from across the pond) has good ones.
Anyone know where I can get a hairpiece like this :(? My hair is so thin and looks so small and flat when I put it up in a bun
any beauty supply store
do you have videos of your performances? I would love to watch it :)
Teresa Sofia I am working on getting some on here!
Hi! ❤️ I'm going to be in NYC next week. Do you recommend taking classes at steps? Or where else do you recommend taking classes to stay in shape?
I recommend Steps. Nancy Bielski's class is my absolute FAVORITE. MMAC is also good with Debbie Wingert.
Your so awesome.m. sory just had to get that out of the way. I struggle to do a bun that will stay in my hair have any tips on doing a bun on yourself with Zero help?
Lemoncake Thank you! So sorry I am just now replying to you! I had the HARDEST time doing my bun. I think I struggled until l was about 15. I think if you can have 2 mirror - one in front of you and then one in back of you (so you can see what you are doing in the front mirror) it really helps. But honestly it is just trial and error.
Hi, so I am auditioning for SAB and The Suzanne Farrell Ballet soon. I was wondering do you recommend using this hairstyle for auditions? It seems as though it would make sense because Miss Farrell worked with Balanchine, and SAB leads into NYCB which Balanchine started. I could really use help, I love your channel so much! Do you think you could do a video on different ballet techniques like vagonova, checceti, balanchine, and the distinctions between them?
Coral H did you make it into SAB?
I go to sab!
Would you mind doing a French twist tutorial? Every one says it's easy but I can never get it to stay in or look right!
Yes!
2022!!
where did you get the hairpiece? i use a bun maker, but this looks really natural!!
I got mine through NYCB. Our makeup artist at the time, Michael Avedon, got it for me.
2022!
If you don't mind answering, where did you get the hair piece from? It seems very practical and easy to use compared to other extensions!
+deanna sumrein Mine was provided by our hair dresser at NYCB. I wish I knew where he got it from!
oo ok! I guess I will look around, thank you for replying :)
can you do a french twist
Any tips for thin hair? My buns end up about the size of small bounce ball, so I have to use a donut. I know she talked about a hair piece, but is there another option?
Aubrey E its either a hair rat of teasing the hell out of your hair before bunning
Any suggestions for people with layered hair? :/
+Maureen Seel I used to have layered hair for a very long time and I either used lots of pins (make sure they match the colour of your hair) and hairspray (and the old toothbrush+hairspray method) or a hairband (again, make sure it matches the colour of your hair).
For the bun itself, you can use a hairnet (and again, same colour, you don't want anyone to see that there's anything in your hair), it keeps the ends of your hair that stick out of the bun down.
I have a question so what about African American hair
Sha Sha I do the same "ponytail" then do two twist and wrap them around each other. Makes the hair look thick ☺
My hair is no where near long enough to do the loops at the end. :( I'll have to stick to my plain flat bun.
Does anybody know the first piece of music she uses while she is doing the bun? I know I have heard it before.
me too! I'm dying to know what it is
Jenna Wu-Cardona I have done the variation in class before, but for the life of me I can't remember what it was!
Jenna Wu-Cardona after many hours of searching, I found that is the silver fairy variation from Sleeping Beauty
hi
How old are you?
And when did you started ballet
+Ryna Dialino I think she is 26 or 27.
What is your fake hair piece called?
I am not sure. I got it through NYCB.
I LOVE your channel, and I'm already a subscriber. I would like to know how is your rotine before classes and how many times you take (because sometimes I get late for classes because of it), witch pointe shoes do you use... And if you can, take a look on my channel that's about ballet too, I would be SO happy if you do :D
Thank you! I will!
Ahh!!!! Why is my hair so short!?!
I spend 30 minutes on my hair every single day

Why am I here? I don’t have enough hair for this nor do I dance.
This was a hot mess
