Fletcher - What Makes It So Damn Good? [202k damage]

- I often talk about the Fletcher when I compare other ships to it, and I do it for a good reason. The Fletcher is the ultimate combination of agility, small size, great guns and stealthy torps, making one mean tier 9 machine. Since it's been a while since I featured a Fletcher vid I added my recommended build at the end.
As promised, the formula for calculating reaction time, if you want to check how quickly people can react to your torps!
D range / (V torp * 2.6) = T reaction - Where D stands for detection range of the torp, V for velocity and T for the reaction time.
Example for Fletcher torps;
1.4km / (66kt *2.6) ≈ 8.2s reaction time
Example Shimakaze F3 torps;
1.9km / (76kt * 2.6) ≈ 9.6s reaction time
Flamu thanks man.
Flamu Have you tried the yolo style 81knot torps on the Yugomo?
Where does the 2.6 come from? Am i stupid?
Would you say that the Fletcher needs a possible nerf? Or maybe a general nerf on the American smokescreens?
*****
No, D is the spot range.
Favorite DD in the game, probably my favorite ship overall. I really haven't enjoyed the Gearing nearly as much as the Fletcher. I even sprung for the perm camo. My grandfather served on a Fletcher in WWII, I'm so glad it's so strong in the game.
decodeddiesel I agree, I had the Gearing and Shime but gave them up and kept the Fletcher.
7:00 DID FLAMU JUST SAY TORPOI??!
Lmao
Flamu shame that island teleported there, that might of been close to 300k damage FeelsBadMan
Yeah, teleporting islands is really game breaking at times, I have no idea what they were thinking adding that ever since launch!
I got more funny situation once. I was retreating in my dd, firing nostop from my rear guns and then I stuck.
WHF! I was in open waters with no islands. It was my dead teammate and I did not just bump into him I jumped from the water and landed on top of him. The next minute I role played a fort artillery installation.

Wtf? ! Do you have that replay?
Flamu have you tried the torpedo speed captain skill on Fletcher ? 71kts and 8.2 Km range, like the F3 torps but with 0.5 less detection and 5kts less speed, ive used them for awhile now and theyre pretty much fool proof, especially against BB's, and being a fletcher its not nearly as risk to be aggressive and push in to 8km
I was so waiting for this ship review! I hope you do another series of it like you did with the Des Moines. Cheers!...
A quick question or 2 for you Flamu. I have a 19 point captain for my Fletcher and I was wondering if IFHE would be better for an average player than using, say Radio location, when playing a Fletcher?
Also, do you think that Concealment System Mod 1, which offers -10% detection range, +5% shell dispersion and -10% detection range of aircraft carriers squadrons (what does that really mean???) is not as good as selecting Target Acquisition System, which promises +20% spotting range, +20% acquisition range of torps and assured detectability range of +50% (I assume that means 2 km assured detection increases to 3 km for you and only you). It seems that a 20% increase in your spotting range is twice as good for you as a 10% reduction in your own detectability. Also, the 20% increased torp acquisition range. is always a very good thing, right?
I have never seen anyone explain the Target Acquisition System, so I don't know.
Also I was the person who explained bom-er pronunciation vs bom-ber pronunciation 2 months ago, if that rings a bell.
As always, thanks Flamu for all of your help and patience.
On what you said about the reaction time people have for torps. Gearing with torp acceleration has 13.2km range with 71 knot torps that are detected at 1.4km. People have 7.5 seconds to react. I love it.
Good timing for this. Almost done with my Benson grind.
I don't have Gearing yet, it's performance may defy my expectations. I think the reason it's better is turret configuration; having four forward, superfiring turrets makes you a much better deullist. You're able to charge down enemy dds in a way that Fletcher simply can't. Even a Khabarovk's hit points divided by the the Gearing's dps is less than the reverse. This is yet a greater difference when you consider a four to four gun bearing scenario.
I'm don't know if you recognize this scenario as part of good play, but I find my own play somewhat reflects these very straightforward trading conditions.
Love your videos. As how-to goes, it's incredible instruction. Just curious. I specced my Fletcher out with an AA buff. AFT instead of survivability and torpedo reload. Still grinding towards concealment at 17 points. At least on the NA server, there are t9/10 cv drivers who absolutely wreck the first dd into a cap. If you can't make them disperse, or at least screw up their drops, you get dead fast. How is it on the European server?
Hi Flamu, sorry if this has been asked or answered, what is the mod you have that allows you to see the line extended from enemy ships when they are locked as target? thanks!
Flamu i want to be a good DD player, any tips? i always seem to not get torp hits even though i either follow the estimate or sometimes estimate on my own. im a BB and CA player most of the time
Do you know when the Graff Spee is coming to town? Hoping it will come as nice X-mass gift these days D
Fletcher also has better concealment than the Gearing. That + the increased range means you have a very large stealth-firing window.
I have a question about fires... If the Fletcher has a five percent fire chance, doesn't that make an enemy BB with the captain skill and the upgrade for lower fire chance immune to fire from it completely? Just making cruisers and BBs capable of getting fires?
Or do you still get like a complementary one percent just because it cant get lower than that or something?
Because if you can actually get a zero percent fire risk from DDs then it could tbh be nice to get on a high lvl captain imho. Sure, cruisers still set fires. But an annoying DD you cant shoot back at will do more or less nothing to you at least. Sure, vigilance is maybe overall better but on a Bismarck for example, you have hydro anyway.
The 7% is actually 7% off the 5% fire chance which only lowers it to 4.65%
So that's how it works...wow. Useless then. Why even have skills like that in the game? Makes more or less no difference.
+MrZemIan Dude, that skill was never good since OBT, so why bother. Most BB and cruiser captain opt to reduce fire and flooding time, and use premium Damage Control Party to reduce cool down between use. XD
Great video, AFT not viable for range?
Is it really better to go for the extra HP skill instead of the extra fire chance, if the main thing us dds do is setting stuff on fire? Wouldn't the fire chance go from 5% to 8%? I just got my Farragut and will soon have to decide 😊
Greytest 3 second reload will eventually get fires, HP perk gives you around a 15% hp buff, so yes HP over fire chance. Fletcher is a godly knife fighter, more hp will tip the scales even more in your favor
You said you would put the formula in the comments?
;)
i'm playing soviet DDs again and i feel loke i'm not losing turrets. was there a buff????
What really amazes me is how stealthy Fletcher can be. I got mine down to 5.8km and I consistently outspot Shimis and Yugumos. It's great!
How is the mod called that shows the border of the smoke screen?
its part of the game now.
The Mark 16 and Mark 17 USN torps on Fletcher and Gearing used Navol as fuel, aka a peroxide based fuel, which performed better than the oxygen systems of the Type 93, and was just as hard to detect by not leaving a bubble trail.
The warhead, while smaller in mass, used a more powerful explosive as well, making them more destructive than the Type 93.
IJN players can try to be salty about it, but the Mark 16 and Mark 17 torpedoes are just better, both IRL and in-game.
The Mark 16/17 torpedo's were never used in world war 2. They were developed in 1944 but never saw combat. The type 93 was developed in 1928, and extensively used during world war 2 proving to be the most powerful torpedo of world war 2. The Mark 17 was newer than the ''long lance'' so one would expect it to be better. This was not the case, the type 93 was both faster and had longer range
Type 93 specifications:
22,000 meters at 50 knots
Mark 17 specifications:
16,500 meters at 46 knots
You also mention that the Mark 17 used navol as fuel making it just as stealthy as the type 93, but in the game the american torps have 1.4 detection while the Japanese has 1.7, even though in real life they were just as stealthy if not more. The warhead of the Mark 17 was smaller but used more advanced explosives however, since it was put in service 16 years after the type 93 i would expect it to have better explosives. The exact difference in explosive potential i do not know. Type 93 torpedo's were proven to be deadly and reliable by killing dozens of american warships. Mark 17 torpedo's were calculated to be dangerous and reliable but never proven.
The mark 17 should not be compared to the ''long lance'' since it was developed much later, but still the type 93 was better. The fletcher class mostly used the Mark 15 torpedo. Mark 15 torpedo's were pitiful in comparison to the type 93. It had a smaller warhead with much worse explosive potential, it was much easier to detect. And it was much slower with laughable range
Mark 15 specifications:
5,500 meters at 45 knots
IJN dd's should have much better torpedo's than American dd's for both realism and balancing since IJN dd's have really bad guns.
Hi Flamu, nice video. Can you please make an video about Gearing? Is been a while since u made a Gearing commentary. Please Please Please!!!
I never turn broadside to a cloud in a BB thats just asking for trouble. And this videos shows why :D
I'm Playing since closed Beta, I haven't started the American destroyer line. I've learned to play against them, Think I'll start and see if I can use it as well as you....Thank's Flamu....
The down side is you have to go through the mahan to get to it.
@flamu would like to see an updated fletcher video in the 2022 meta
Ever tried the fletcher with full aa spec and team up with a cv? its even more scary than a DM.
Man, im not sure about this ship. I loved the USN DDs.. but in Benson I have such bad luck. Im afraid this will continue with Fletcher.
IJN torps deal more damage than USN torps, must make them shit in every other way to compensate ))) excellent plan Tovarisch is much balance )))
basically how I imagine the balancing process with IJN DDs
I love the Fletcher so much i still kept my concealment captain in it even after getting the Gearing
Why do you choose Survivability Expert over AFT? Health over range?
FastFreddy2 survivability expert is over a 10% hp buff, and Fletcher is best at close range
AFT is THE worst skill for USN DDs. You can't hit a thing over 10 km but BBs anyhow. And contesting caps is where this ship shines. Among many other things.
For now, at least. German DDs will have both smoke and hydro. I don't see any other DDs being able to compete with them for caps.
Extra range will not help you then. Extra HP will. Besides, any knife fights over 6 km and USN DDs are at a serious disadvantage.
Also, IJN F3 76kts fish make hydro almost redundant in close DD fights. :)
The Fletcher just felt like a Swiss Army Knife, there was no situation that I felt it could not handle. The Gearing on the other hand, only had it for about 3 weeks now, but just doesn't feel as solid as my beloved Fletcher
I still prefer it over the Gearing. Torpedoes hit harder and have a faster reload than Gearing torpedoes. Sure they don't have as much range, but you don't use that extra range with the Gearing all that often anyway. I was far more consistent with it than I am with my Gearing as well.
similar here. Didn't even bother with Gearing, just stuck with Fletcher. Really love that boat.
a well played Fletcher is a nightmare to deal with
How do you get the ARP ships on that port?
Kendall Sisson yokosuka port.
so do you think the Fletcher should be nerfed
.uck! Now I know, where those island come from! I honestly thought they were there all the time and it was my garbage play. Now I am really angry on WG, they have not yet solved the bug with teleporting islands. I think we should write a petition. @Flamu, will you facilitate one, so there is no more teleporting islands in the game?
I love my Fletcher. I love sneaking up with my torpedo, penetrating the stern of a unsuspecting captain.
Yeah i just upgraded to a Fletcher and i do notice that i get a lot more torp hits than the Benson.
But IJN can also set a fire after landing a torp, thing is most IJN DDs forget they got guns too.
Yeah but 1 they have harder time hitting torps, 2 they have longer CD on torps, 3 they have less chance to set fire with their guns, 4 they get eaten by Fletcher in knife fight
#3 IJN DDs have the best chance per shell at causing fires, also the shell speed is awesome
Flat arcs and easy to aim
Ya, IJN guns are under rated, especially after the patch gave them a lot more range and the ability to easily stealth fire. They are still not good in a knife fight, but I generally beat US DDs at ranges around 10km.
Lol VMF DD's have the highest fire chance per shell not IJN.
Those where the days...long gone.
5x2 torp 90 sec 4x2 ijn torp 130 sec reload
Stealthy Icytail IJN already have Yamato, Zao and Hakuryu, let the USN have SOMETHING better for once at high tiers
Acuda721 tho I feel like if there was an ijn vs usn, usn will shit on ijn.
Keming Shi So it's okay for yamato to shit on Montana or Hakuryu to shit on Midway? But not ok for a USN DD to shit on IJN Dd?
Acuda721 I'm pretty sure I meant if a team of usn vs a team of ijn the usn will win. I mean ideally wg shld make it such that the lines are balanced, but that's not the case. And I didn't say anything about being ok for yamatos and hakuryus to destroy their usn counterparts, I just stated that in a team play scenario usn ships are better
Keming Shi USN high tier DDs are better, but that's it. No other line do they their outperform IJN counterparts at high tier, like I said let US have something that they are best at
Finally!!! a Fletcher !!!
The Farragut has 12.6 KM range of the main guns.
The Fletcher is the best DD of the game.
i will always prefear the gearing , for sure in a 1 vs 1 fletcher vs gearing the gearing will always win without any doubt the firepower cant even be compared
Where's the formula?
Flamu, what do you think, how much credits the mighty mo will cost?
1 credit
HurkOne GraffitiTV a tier 8 premium is about 50$ so the mo will be about 15-20$ more?
(in coins=free xp)
Catcrumbs i think 1 Credit for camo
HurkOne GraffitiTV It'll cost free XP
Missouri costs 750k free xp. Assuming you start with 0 free xp, it's roughly $107 worth of doubloons to convert.
so are the shima tarps less good than fletcher torps?
Hell no, 50% more torps per volley that are way faster and hit like a downhill runaway freight train
It sort of depends. Shima torps are faster, hit harder, and they carry more. Fletcher torps are harder to detect and therefore harder to react to. They're both strong in their own ways.
bière petzouille Shima's 15 20km torps are used to lure t1~4 players that know little about other stats into the ijn line. IJN torps are awful.
My favourite ship.
I regretted selected Demolish as the 4th skill. Can't even win a Yugumo for sure in a dog fight.
You must have some kind of psychic powers since you don't have to check dpeed on ships before firing your guns AND hits them. GG KAPPA
where are the players better, NA or EU?
EU
You are wrong my freind. Fletcher is nothing, its captain is the reason for the skill. Remember, no ship is good, but with its good captain
flamu can u show me how to play the kiev?
He has a lot of kiev vids. Look it up on his channel. I'm sure you'll love it cause I sure did. :D
I get so little fires with mahan .. it has 5% as well
That would actually be a good map... random teleporting islands :')
oh yes, love is in the air... but dont forget magic word #methismacs formake trends in your live... Love!
I mean in that sense Fletcher is a better torp boat than the yugomo
Fletcher really needs a torpedo nerf wtf..
No Demo Expert?
No I don't run it on the Gearing either. Your fire chance on these ships comes from your rate of fire more than each individual shell. Survivability expert is so much more useful game to game.
Yes, I never bought a Gearing either.
got the xp,need some credits for it.Sooo close.
Is your alt's name PotatoGod? haha
That's my NA account yeah
And some people wonder why IJN DD captains are salty even after the so called 'buffs'
It's because theIJN torp have higher decection range than USN torp, which is funny because IRL the Long Lance torp have a reputation of hard to detect, so there's that.
IJN DD was recently buff, but mostly at their gun performance, making gun is a more viable choice. Except the Akizuki however, the gun is still slow turning so they still inferior even to the Soviet DD.
I wouldn't even call it a buff, overall it was a straight nerf across the board. Speed, alpha, firechance, concealment, torpedo's.
Marvin Westmaas Well.... kind of true. Still, I will take what I get, and I still did well with the Yuugumo's gun so...... :)
And hey, at least the USN need something they are worth for, because the remaining line of them is pretty much..... meh:
- USN battleship, expect at brawling and AA battery: Nope, German take brawling from them, and with CV "rebalance", AA power is a reliability.
- USN CV, master of Air superiority: Well nope, you take AS and your surface attack power near non esistence, lisewise when you take Strike. Balance loadout, IJN CV does that better than you.
Yugomo is the ONLY straight upgrade over Kagero. Now try and say something positive about the rest of them :)
Marvin Westmaas Well I'm doing well with the rest of them, so... okay in my opinion. XD
I was always subed to you but today i noticed that for some reason you were un-subed.. weird
Huh me too
It's a really shitty glitch in youtube now, every time you upload vids you randomly lose subs. So you guys prob got unsubbed because of that :/
Ritz Matt I've had that too. RUclips is being very strange lately.
Lol I realised it happened to me as well
It is nice as the Fletcher-class was one of the finest DD to be built during WW2 with no other country making a DD that is as flexible, well armed and accommodating as the fighting Fletchers.
its pure paper ship
>Not as fast as IJN DD
wot???
Not as fast shima* would be the correct one. Forgot how slow Yugumo was.
and incoming USN DD nerf
Now to get rid of this Benson and its horrible arcs. Not to mention its torps go as fast as sea turtles ;p
It's about time they nerf usn dds, even tho I play it myself. I feel dirty playing usn dds and eating underage ships.
No, they DON'T need a nerf.... Through ALL servers, the US DDs are performing in the middle of all DDs in damage, K/D and Win rate. If any DD needs a nerf it would be the Russians again
+Acuda721 Yeah Russian DDs are kinda BS. All the strengths of a cruiser with none of the weaknesses.
Acuda721 the thing is, a good usn dd captain can absolutely dominate a game, but the same can't be done in an ijn dd.
Plz don,t get my fav DD nerfed by showcasing it and getting people bitching to wg .. lol
