In this video I tell the short version of what 20 years of heavy drinking was like, what happened, and what my sobriety is like now. I've also touched on some resources to help those in need. I'd appreciate any comments, likes, shares, and especially new subscribers on the channel! RUclips's robots are studying my stats, and I'm really curious to see if this RUclips experiment of mine can grow legs. And now for my "branding" line lol...LET'S DO THIS DAMN THING! 🎥🎬🤓🎨

Well said. Very straightforward. Which is good. Real talk. And a real story. They're the best to learn from. I am alchohlic. And when I get blind drunk. I am a monster. Yet when I'm sober. I'm a gentle and placid person. It's like Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde. I am trying to keep off the booze. I had 5 beers the other day. I have had 5 beers in 2 weeks. But I know that when my pay day comes around my head will scream for more. I'm gonna try to ignore it. It is very hard to control. I did it for 8 months. Cut down to 6 beers a week. But then it came back to the point where I had a few more, then a few more. Then 30 or so a week. Two cartons a week etc. You're right, as an alcoholic controlling it is near on impossible. But I don't feel I can stop completely. Coz of my anxiety issuss and shit. I am gonna try. To stop completely. I just need to take it slowly is all. Maybe that won't work? Idk. Maybe not. But I'm gonna try to eventually stop altogether once I am used to going without it. And at the very least. Never get blind drunk again. Therein lies the issues I guess. It's hard to stop at just one or two or three. Five becomes six and six becomes ten and ten becomes twenty. Yeah I know the drill. I'm not naive. Just hopeful I guess. Well done for stopping man. Takes real strength. I know. Coz I can't seem to stop altogether.

It started with an extremely traumatic birth for both myself and my mother. It started with nightmares as a child. It started with abuse and neglect and gaslighting. It started with being relentlessly bullied no matter where my mother moved us. It started with eating too many sweets (I could never eat just one... I would always eat the whole pack straight away). It started when I discovered that drinking numbed the pain.
I was 15 years old, living with my narcissistic and emotionally neglectful single mother.
I still remember the first major bout of depression and anxiety, and how a bottle of wine made it all go away.
I don't regret my 15 years of DAILY ROUND THE CLOCK alcoholism. Not one bit. It's made me who I am, and despite it all I have some truly incredible friends who love and respect me for my many virtues, and who hate my disease (though it took me 10 years to get rid of the bad friends and influences in my life).
Going into detox and rehab in 5 days after a 2 YEAR waiting list. I'm done with this poison. DONE.

I've been to rehab twice, somehow survived 2 suicide attempts, got a criminal record, huge debt, substance addictions, depression, numerous broken bones, messed my family up, isolated myself from friends, lost a very well paid job. The list is endless. My saviour was getting back into martial arts and training to exhaustion. I competed in a boxing event last week, I lost and broke my nose but it wasnt about the result it was about getting back to being me. There is always a way. Always. I thought my life was over and I was convinced. Just find it.

Thank you for sharing your story, James. Hearing about other people's struggles with addiction helps me immensely. Last October I tried to stop drinking. I took the better part of 2 months off, but I think what did me in was thinking I could get to a point where I could just have the occasional drink on special occasions. By the time Christmas came around, I was back to drinking every night again, despite wanting to quit alcohol more than any other goal in life. I recently turned 49 years of age, and a couple of weeks ago I had enough. It's been two weeks since I had a drop of alcohol, and I already feel happier and healthier. My goal this time is to 100% stop drinking...forever. No illusions that I'll get to a point where I can just enjoy a drink or two on special occasions. I know if I have a drink again, I'll be drinking regularly again. Every fiber of my being understands that drinking a toxin on a daily basis is going to make me miserable and eventually kill me, and it needs to stop. I have my eye on the goal and taking it one day at a time.

Have been drinking heavily from age 35 and now 37 (was a once a year “social drinker” but would black out; that should have been my first clue of my addictive nature 😔)....it’s been awful. I tried to stop cold turkey I’m on my third night and have the worst anxiety and pain on my chest....please pray I can get
    Through this.....as of mom of 2 I can’t take this anymore 😔🙏

Then Came Sober James -thank you so much! It’s weird to say this to some one unknown on the other side of the screen/internet but ITS BEEN hard for me. I don’t even want to drink but the scary part is the withdrawal and pain right after deciding to quit. Today has been the hardest for me. The pain and electrical feeling from my whole body even while asleep has been unbearable!!! To the point that all those 5 out of 7 days of binging on vodka/wine for the past 3.5 years is not worth it. Maybe going cold turkey was a mistake to go on my own and feel like going to the dr/ER this minute. No one knows (at home) why I’m feeling this way but it’s definitely a withdrawal symptom I have never felt.... thank you for your encouragement and I’m being optimistic every minute but scared at the same time.

21 days sober today, had enough money to scrap together to get into a rehab center for a couple weeks and I got out a week ago. First 5 days there I wanted to just hop the fence and go get a drink from the corner store. I actually thought about leaving my phone behind just to get a drink. After I got out I haven’t really craved it to bad, I’m also on naltrexone. It cost me my CDL and separated from the navy for it too. It’s not worth it. Until about a month ago I blamed everyone and everything in my life for my issues except drinking. If I put in the smarts I used to hide my drinking from everybody for 3 years (since I graduated my A school for the navy) into having a successful life I’d be rich right now.

Found you on twitter and sent you a message there, I have been also trying to spread the message and trying to raise awareness for this current state of addiction in the world. I recently got out of rehab and just celebrated 90 days sober today. I have been documenting my own sobriety since day 50 on my channel and basically approaching it from the perspective of going on the journey alongside the community of those in recovery. Some friends from rehab who are more familiar with the other drugs such as opioids ,heroin and cocaine have been participating in interviews to share their experience in addiction and what life is like now either recovering from health problems or dealing with the legal system. It was ironic you said in your video about people winding up in the ground or in jail because I have been preaching that for 4 weeks. Anyways, I subscribed and if you do more videos like this I will def recommend the channel to other people. Trying to see if we can have an impact or arrests and death statistics in 2019. Thanks for the Inspiration and keep moving forward my man.

I would love more info. I feel like I am in a downward spiral. Drinking was my social thing for the longest time but then my divorce happened. At 42 I never thought I would be divorced. Being rejected caused so much pain and confusion; now I live on my own in a small apartment, no friends, my immediate family lives on the other side of the country. I began drinking heavily on weekends to get through weekends. Where I once had responsibility and routine I now have nothing. Some week days I go home and finish off a bottle just to cope with being the loneliness, not wanting to feel the hurt and sadness I've been holding onto, no motivation and now winter is here, when I get home from work at night, it's dark, I sit in my chair in a cold dark living room thinking back at all I once had. When I was a kid, I praised my father for being able to quit drinking, now I find myself facing the same battle he did but I'm older than he was. It's a dark and scary place to be.

15 years ago i used to go online to join AA sober chat rooms.. Don't go to AA or online anymore was a bottom drunk hospitals, rehab program etc. You name it... Heavy drinker effect drinker to numb the mind. Lost my family everything . James tells you the classic AA way it says which I don't fully agree. Don't attend AA meetings and you will drink well I haven't drank again. God's stuff wasn't for me, I decided people get addicted to AA and go overboard. James your story is a direct quote from the big book and a common story tell us your real story . The 12 steps are for everyone, not just addicts, yes addicts that's what we are. So in my 16 year sober, just do it.. I was told I was on my way to an early death, but that didn't stop me, 4 more years until i woke up and got serious .

@@SoberJames Yeah I had it sort of together for awhile but by the time I was 23, I had been arrested 3 times for fighting and DUI and that continued for awhile. I also was on xanax and pain killers, totally messed myself up. I remember we were very "adventurous" and tried many things early on and that caught up to me eventually

Yeah bro, shit gets hectic. I'm like night and day. My sister and mother and father wanted nothing to do with me at my worst, now I babysit my sister's kids, people come to me for advice, night and day the difference between drinking me and sober me.

    • @SoberJames
      @SoberJames  5 лет назад +2

Xanax was my thing too. I'd black out on xanax and booze for days on end. I came out of it one day and asked my girlfriend how many beers I'd had. She said sixty three. I checked the trash, but I didn't have to, I knew she was dead as serious. Another time, my mom told me she watched just standing there straight up, all 6'4"of me, and I just fell straight forward into my face...like a dead tree. She said I just got up, got a paper towel for the blood and another beer. Crazy.

The book worked for me. I’m surprised more people haven’t utilized it. Very simple message repeated that gets inside you. Hypnotic. Flipped a switch in my brain and I no longer have any desire to drink. I drank every day for twenty years but limited myself to sixteen ounces of hard liquor per night to somewhat limit the morning hangover. I realize everyone is different but wanted to put this out there. Like you said there aren’t a lot of options. Dirt nap, incarceration,or life of misery.

Hi I really liked hearing your story! I’ve been withdrawing now for three days, terrified for my life, having major chest pains and nights sweats and anxiety. I would normally try to wean myself off but I was too scared because I had taken aspirin due to believing I was having a heart attack. I’m going to stay strong this time and take it one day at a time.
I ended up humiliating myself AGAIN monday night, calling a coworker absolutely plastered and blacked out, something I’ve been doing a lot lately, definitely a cry for help. I hope I don’t die during these withdrawals. If I do I wish you and everyone the best in getting sober. Peace.
