A great show that died way before its time. It had a bit of a rough start but it seem to find its groove after a while. It had real substance and made one think which is not something most shows do these days. Maybe we will get another shot at it on Netflix or something similar though I am sure at this point all the actors have moved on.
No dude, actually it should have died in the first season. What a way to ruin the franchise, with a show that was more like a telenovela in space than stargate. Horrible.
I know many people hate SGU because it lacked the adventurous and comical aspects of SG1 and SGA, but if a Stargate actually existed it would look more like SGU. Constantly fighting amongst ourselves, self-sabotage, non-communication, egotistical personalities working for their self interest.
Stargate Universe came too early, too much ahead of it's time, because of the tone too serious and dramatic it's spitting. I bet If the show had arrived in 2018, it would have been a success.
Your probably not wrong. The problem is that SGU followed SG1 and Atlantis which both had completely different tones. This show was much darker in feel which sort of came as a culture shock to many Stargate fans. Now most Stargate fans are craving anything from the franchise and I think SGU would fit the bill nicely.
SGU was set up for failure from the start. A lot of Stargate Fans were pissed, rightfully so, because Stargate Atlantis got canceled arguably at its peak and because of this they felt like it was being replaced with Universe. I think fans would have jumped on board a lot quicker had they aired the two shows back to back like they did with SG1 and Atlantis back in the day. The other major issue was that SYFY was trying to get out of the science fiction genre and into the reality tv genre and moved Stargate from the Friday time slot it had for years to a Tuesday slot
SGUs format was almost a carbon clone of Battlestar which was award winning. The issue with Universe was almost no one who liked Stargate liked SGU. It was a show built to target an entirely different and new audience, coupled with a serialized format that heavily relied on character investment with a pretty mediocre first season.
I think this show had potential, but as someone once told me "potential is a 10" dick that cant get hard"... This show didnt get hard until it was too late and the girl (or guy if you swing that way) had already put on their clothes on and walked out the door. I would have liked to have seen it end properly and not just with Eli trying to fix the last stasis pod or dying trying. Kind of like how SG1 had 2 movies to end it, though that being said, i still prefer the ending to SG1 before the movies compared to afterwards, Tel'cs last word being "indeed" seemed fitting.
the show was UP and COMING, the problem is that while it was excellent sci-fi, it was terrible Stargate. There was no core team, no one was likable, there was no main protagonist, and there was too much relationship drama.
@@kylerstorm9260 I have to agree, they tried to deviate from what made stargate great, and instead tried to make it about an ensemble cast rather than focusing on the one team like SG1 and Atlanits did.
If I remember correctly, Daniel Jackson said Ascension did not make him omniscient and that ascension was only the beggining of a journey. I guess the Ancients had plenty of time to explore the universe at a level so deep they can know have an answer or strong hypothesis. But the ship was not designed for ascended people. He was designed when the Ancients thought to connect to it one day and start this expedition. Sadly, they seems to not have chose to reconnecter with the Destiny after they fled Atlantis and prefer Ascension.
Or Destiny is actually in the past and 9 chevron address opens a time travelling wormhole. It is the destiny of the destiny's crew to establish the civilization that would one day become the ancients themselves. Ancients knew this, and devoted the resources of an entire generation for the creation of this ship and named it "destiny".
@@insertclevernamehere2506 I can't remember it making any such comment. It was hinted that Destiny wasn't far from reaching it potential destination, after million years of travel.
@@caseyinutah More accurately, SGU was a mature exploration of the concept behind Star Trek Voyager. Where Voyager completely failed to establish stakes, create fleshed out and interesting characters, or create the impression the crew was truly exploring the unknown, SGU succeeded in spades. I respect BSG, but to attribute any aspects of SGU to BSG is a disservice to both series, which were both brilliant in their own respects.

People just did not like the style of storytelling change from SG1 and SGA to SGU. Today this type of storytelling with more personal stories and longer story arcs is nothing special anymore. If SGU would have been introduced 3-4 years later it could have run as long as SG1. Back then to many complained it is too much of a soap opera and then 2-3 years later they regretted not supporting the show and losing this franchise.
@@kirishima638 The romances were pretty crap. But the overall arc was interesting. Less love triangles, more of the ships mission/unfolding mindblow timetravel it was setting up.

The main problem was it was just hopeless all of the time. Everything was always in the process of getting worse. There was never amy reprieve from that so at some point I just my limit on trauma and was completely numb to everything any disasters that happened afterwards. The comedy was an important aspect of Stargate for that very reason. It provided a reprieve from the galaxy shattering stakes.
Young was the single worst commander ever shown in the entirety of Stargate. Destiny would have been far better off without him. Too bad we never got to see Rush focus on the true mission. Too much time wasted bickering about who was in charge and wasting what little resources they did have for no reason.

This show had so much potential, but it was just bad through and through. My head just hurts from the camerawork. The characters and their unnecessary drama. The plot and the idea is really good. What really killed me the show was the sex scene. So degrading, cheap soap opera fill in. If things would've been different, this show would've been great.
The point, when you make a spin off or sequel show, Is to show things from a different perspective. If it’s exactly the same, then it’s pointless. @@Lava91point0 Bullshit. Bad camera work is not justifiable. It's shaking like they gave the camera to some guy or intern to hold it. Some scenes and moments of the first scenes are just poor. Cheap. I mean budgetless. Like there was a serious problem with directing. Also, unnecessary cheap sex, soap opera drama, cheap teenager movie things and the like. How is that a "different point of view"? Spin-offs. Atlantis was a spin off. How was it a different perspective? It's the StarGate experience with additions. Nice sitcom like show, action, adventure, interesting stories and characters. Loveable characters, and banter. Compare that to Universe. Most characters are unlikeable. Also dumb. Stargate had 8-12 great actors at the very least who were the core and pushing the show forward. Atlantis 4 main + 2 support + 4 other support, technicians, etc, and actors from Stargate, + a couple other main story characters, other side characters. Universe? Around 4 at best. But the second problem is the Script. O'neill was a great character, great script, strong background and the actor already had great movies before. But if he wouldn't have had great script? All of that build for nothing. The character wouldn'T have gone anywhere. The whole Universe series was pushed by 2 actors with decent skills and script. The others even if they had good skills, terrible scripts.
Also not a good start when by episode...4? the producers had to be like "there's no sex in the first 10 minutes this time we're sorry" as I swear they started cutting scenes. to ensure there wasn't. It had a ROUGH start compared to other SG series
Colonel Young came down with a bad case of plot-induced stupidity here. Dr Rush was right to call him out for wasting power for the sake of moral. Too Rush is an unlikable analogue of McKay and Jackson.
I have watched this only once, and never again. When you have so much fighting and hatred towards each other, there is no place in my heart for this. That is why it only lasted two seasons. Look at the 10 seasons of the original SG1 and then the infighting in StarGate Universe and you know why it failed. There is a saying in the bible, “A House divided against itself will fall.” But in the case of this show fail miserably.
I think what caused the failure of this show was twofold. 1. They cast a bunch of wholly unlikeable characters and left themselves no way to add or swap them out for better ones (like they did with SG1 and Atlantis). 2. That permanent, godsawful 'dirty-lens' camera filter got so depressing and tedious after you noticed it that it ground you down until it was just too painful to watch.
After watching a few clips from Universe, it looks like Doctor Rush is always wrong! Maybe not true but with everyone disagreeing and working out their way, it looks like that!

A great show that died way before its time. It had a bit of a rough start but it seem to find its groove after a while. It had real substance and made one think which is not something most shows do these days. Maybe we will get another shot at it on Netflix or something similar though I am sure at this point all the actors have moved on.
the problem is it wasnt too popular with stargate fans it didnt fit well with the other 2
No dude, actually it should have died in the first season.
Destiny is space starship done right. An expert system in a Mustang like spacecraft.
I just got goosebumps. I should watch this show again
There are too many heterosexual white males in it for the current year to handle
The argument at the time was that it was trying too hard, and failing, to be like Battlestar Galactica
SGUs format was almost a carbon clone of Battlestar which was award winning. The issue with Universe was almost no one who liked Stargate liked SGU. It was a show built to target an entirely different and new audience, coupled with a serialized format that heavily relied on character investment with a pretty mediocre first season.
Rush knows the inside and out of ship.
and uses it against his shipmates at every opportunity
Rush knows how would he design the ship if he needed it to fulfill its mission
I always suspect he was an de ascended ancient. Even if he wasn't, he knew way more than he should have the ship and its systems and stargate.
@@kylerstorm9260
I have to agree, they tried to deviate from what made stargate great, and instead tried to make it about an ensemble cast rather than focusing on the one team like SG1 and Atlanits did.
cool moment in this show
one question : the ancients ascended right ? so they got the answer to the destiny mission since they dont need space ships to travel i suppose.
Comment is made to that effect in the show, to explain why Ancients never gated to Destiny - they found another way to get the answer
The music was 50% of this show.
I was horrified for the first few episodes but persevered and love this above SG but behind SGA
This clip has a real Battlestar Galactica feel to it.
It was on at the same time as Battlestar galactica. They tried to copy the format but failed
its the reused sets...
@@caseyinutah More accurately, SGU was a mature exploration of the concept behind Star Trek Voyager. Where Voyager completely failed to establish stakes, create fleshed out and interesting characters, or create the impression the crew was truly exploring the unknown, SGU succeeded in spades.
I respect BSG, but to attribute any aspects of SGU to BSG is a disservice to both series, which were both brilliant in their own respects.
and thats why it was cancelled
If the ancients speak ancient in the series, and English speak English, does that make English the metaphorical portray equivalent ?
so how can first gate structure of gates 60mil years old have earth adress in memory when its on other end of god how many galaxies far? maybe last worked adres like icarus can be recall ( but no response cuz of boom ) but i understand if you manually dial earth it will work with enormous mount of energy than yes but not from biblioteca. But overall I loved SGU very much for me It was SGA,SGU and SG1.
what was the music when the gate was first dialed?

Destiny was a mess but it had it's moments. I think with another season it would have been great.
@@T0ghar It was a soap opera, with two dimensional characters. Remember the whole maybe-baby storyline? Shudder.
@@kirishima638 The romances were pretty crap. But the overall arc was interesting. Less love triangles, more of the ships mission/unfolding mindblow timetravel it was setting up.
@@musicalaviator There was also the lack of a real enemy/protagonist. Those aliens showed up a few times but we didn't learn much of them. The Lucian allience stuff was a just a holdover from the SG-1 and they were pathetic. The drones were just....drones.
It seems more dramatic having a slow dialing gate
Can anyone tell me what word does Rush use in 1:36 , for the sake of a ...?
Morale.
Thanks. Been waiting for 2 years for an answer :)
Young was the single worst commander ever shown in the entirety of Stargate. Destiny would have been far better off without him. Too bad we never got to see Rush focus on the true mission. Too much time wasted bickering about who was in charge and wasting what little resources they did have for no reason.
I imagine Rush might have program the pods so that only he wakes up, with the scientists and engineers.
Greatest Stargate Show. ✨🚨
I respect your right to an opinion, but you're wrong.
Greatest Show.
@@Penultimate_Jive Then why say anything at all?
@@erentheca Cause I'm a loser, and I don't remember writing this comment, lol.
ok, 1:45 that sound sounds exactly like the sound used in Interstellar when they have to dock after Dr Mann fucked shit up.
ok..many stargate is seeding in many planet..
where is factory was make stargate?..
The seeder ships.. rush literally described it in this video
stargate universe wasn't so bad
It brings method to bear,to risk lives or a key only the lord would have.
i never understood rushes inability to be a team player considering their constant need to survive. Hmm, i wonder why every hates me and distrusts me??? The guy is a genius, seeming has social skills even though he can be crass in his interactions, so he never really made sense to me, other being the internal foil of the group. Don't get at me about how he was mostly right, thats called plot armor. He's the main reason the show didnt work on so many levels. I loved robert carlyles performance but his character was written poorly. Like, everyone has a glaring character flaw that needs to be exploited...it got really annoying. the writing and story got better but it wasnt enough to save the show from a poor financial situation at MGM. SGA movie, canceled, 3rd SG1 movie, canceled...SGU didntg have a chance.
Cause Rush only cares about himself like an arrogant asshole.
@@darthnowlan Rush knew what he was doing bringing them to Destiny. In the scene where they first arrive he climbs above all the others and looks down at them, slowly smirking while everyone else was confused. The order to evac was for Earth to be dialed, not Destiny. Every one of them was used by Rush as his own captive lab rats. A world, the Destiny, where only he was brilliant and knew the answers. Only he could "save" them. Narcissistic asshole.
@@GamerLoggos Never liked that prick Rush.
Sometimes the journey is long but the thought is short
This show had so much potential, but it was just bad through and through. My head just hurts from the camerawork. The characters and their unnecessary drama. The plot and the idea is really good. What really killed me the show was the sex scene. So degrading, cheap soap opera fill in. If things would've been different, this show would've been great.
The point, when you make a spin off or sequel show, Is to show things from a different perspective. If it’s exactly the same, then it’s pointless. In my opinion it was a more realistic take, there were no dues ex machinas (well at least not the usual kind). So of course fans hated it, and brought it to an end 🙄
The show was teetering btw the worlds of CW teen drama and legit sci fi. Fortunately, by the 2nd season, it was the latter lol.
I had high hopes for Universe (big SG1 and Atlantis fan) but just got tired of the CONSTANT bickering in EVERY episode. Just my opinion.
Also not a good start when by episode...4? the producers had to be like "there's no sex in the first 10 minutes this time we're sorry" as I swear they started cutting scenes. to ensure there wasn't.
It had a ROUGH start compared to other SG series
I agree
Rush was right
Colonel Young came down with a bad case of plot-induced stupidity here. Dr Rush was right to call him out for wasting power for the sake of moral.
Too Rush is an unlikable analogue of McKay and Jackson.
DESTINY?OU INFINITY?VOUS ÊTES DANS LE CHANT ? DANS LE NÉANT
Anyone on this ship is either arrogant or pervert. Very few are both.
After watching a few clips from Universe, it looks like Doctor Rush is always wrong! Maybe not true but with everyone disagreeing and working out their way, it looks like that!
This is the reason I didn't like this series. I will not condemn anyone that does like it!
infighting, or the gate sound?
Atlantis was cancelled FOR THIS???
No, it was cancelled for an Atlantis movie that never happened because of the financial issues MGM ran into around that time.SGU kind of resides in it's own little bubble, both in-universe and out.
(I actually made a video a while back, "What really killed Stargate?", if you're curious).
@@Rocksteady72a They should've stuck with a Season 6 instead of going for a movie.
Also, the actors wanted more money
yes
SGU S2 showed in which great direction the show was going.
One of the worst sci fic shows ever made, and of course an abomination with the name "stargate" in it. And the one that ruined the franchised for good.
SGU was a really bad idea of concept
I'm proud that Stargate fan's killed the franchise rather then see it turn into a Bullshit Drama.
There's no apostrophe in "fan's".
