- GM 071 class no. 073 hauling a full load of flat bottomed rail (approx 0.75 mile's worth) from Portlaoise to Cahir in Co. Tipperary.
The train is firstly seen passing through Dundrum, south of Thurles on the Dublin - Cork line before later passing through Cahir station on the Limerick Junction - Waterford branch en route to Clonmel where a loco runaround occurs. It's then seen heading back west (not east as the subtitle incorrectly states) passing Kilmalogue before we catch up with it depositing the rails west of Cahir station at Caherabbey Lower.

Absolutely fascinating video. Amazing how the rails appear to be so flexible !
Glad you enjoyed it John. I was actually surprised myself how elastic they were. A certain amount is necessary to allow for expansion and contraction in hot weather.
Thank you so much for replying and for explaining "the science bit" , lol.
Really interesting video - well shot too! Many thanks to the Irish Mainline for posting
Much appreciated thanks 👍
superb footage Danny from the look of the pace being carried they sure weren't wasting any time
Thanks Joe, in all they laid 3/4 mile of rail in the space of a few hours.
Great camera work as usual. Really hope they hold on to that line, not just for nostalgia now, mind! But it's a great piece of infrastructure and very important no doubt as a reserve route if something serious blocked the mainline. You got a snap of the old signal I think in Clonmel, or was it Carrick, a while back, I'm a bit nostalgic myself, no apologies!! Keep that scooter at the ready, always enjoyable. Paddy
Thanks as always for the kind comments Paddy, the upcoming relaying is at least a positive sign that there's plenty of life left in the line. Plenty of semaphores still in Clonmel (& Carrick), no sign of CTC taking over there yet thankfully.
Great footage.
Thanks Eamonn, appreciated.
In just the right spot there. Fascinating how flexible the rails are.
Yeah got lucky with the vantage point. Was surprised myself how elastic they were.

Os there much jointed track left on this line ?
Up to recently there was just 2 short stretches, west of Clonmel and through Cahir, the latter section is currently being relayed as CWR.
