The Building of "Frosty Morn" Section 3: Decking, Fitting Out, and Launching
Section 1: Lofting & Setup - Section 2: Setup and Planking - Section 3: Decking, Fitting Out, and Launching Хобби
We are the current owners of Frosty Morn (now Northern Traveller) and are happy to report that as she approaches the age of 30 she still looks and performs like a new boat, thanks to the quality of materials and the techniques and care used in her construction. McClelland is a master boatbuilder.
I have posted two videos of her under sail - search "starboard tack at Hecla Island" and "double reefed off Hecla Island"
good
Hi, it is now in Rivière du loup in eastern Québec. Do you know the phrf for that boat?
I am a contractor by trade out of Boston Massachusetts. It was a real pleasure watching you build a beautiful boat. Your handwork is second to none. Now if I could only teach my carpenters to take a little bit of pride in their work, I showed this video to my guys at lunch time to see if I could get a little pride out of them. I hope it works. Beautiful boat. Fantastic job.

Hi, should have gone to bed hours ago but started to watch and could not stop . Lovely to watch a craftsman at work. Like all highly skilled people you make it look so easy. Thanks for posting this. Regards, Rod
My man, you’ve built one hell of a sweet little boat there. Very very nice. I want one!
Thank you for allowing us to be a part of such an incredible build! I can't express how much I enjoyed watching and dreaming......;)
You have a talent that is slowly giving way to the modern boat building techniques. I hope you have a young man to help you out in your shop that is smart enough to pick your brain during the day. You my friend are very talented. It was a real pleasure to watch you work.
Vinny
I come from a family of traditional boat builders and so I do know craftsmanship. This is mastercraftsmanship at its best. The tone of the man's voice projects peace of mind and a good heart and confirms what Enstein once said, that sailling and violin playing are the noblest of pleasures. This man is a noble gentleman indeed
Great job.
Thank you for posting.
Having spent 5 years restoring a 33 ft. sailboat from top of the mast to keel I know this how much work you had under your belt !…
Everybody watching this video should leave a comment thumbing you up !!!…
Always great to watch an artist at work and would love to see much more. Thank you.
Hello: I was the third owner of this boat - owned and sailed her for seventeen years, from 1998 to 2015. This boat outpointed everything i ever sailed against. She was a sailor's sailboat! Her deep foils and hull shape made her unbeatable to weather. I sold her on for a boat with more headroom and cruising amenities, but still miss the sound of waves slapping against the cold-molded hull, and the way she would accelerate "through the gears" as she caught the wind. The fractional rig, a midcockpit traveller, radiused in two planes, with a windward sheeting car, and a rigid vang made it easy to tweak the mainsail shape for most wind/heading combination. With a relatively small foretraingle, you had to fly a spinnaker to get the most out of her downwind, and in really stiff winds her relatively light (750 lb) ballast made her somewhat tender, so you had to reef early and depower the main in gusts.
She received annual coats of varnish to her topsides as UV protection for the clear finished glass/epoxy layer on the outside of the hull, and painted surfaces were redone as required with Interlux Briightside. The only structural work I did was to re-skin the rudder with an extra layer of 10 oz glass set in clear-setting epoxy, to thwart off some incipient checking of the wood - otherwise she needed nothing beyond paint, epoxy, varnish and Cetol to maintain her in Bristol condition. The boat was as sound when sold as the day she rolled out of McClelland's shop. The cold-molded hull was bulletproof and never leaked a drop, nor did the decks or windows. His build quality was second to none.
Thanks for posting this video - I passed on my CD copies of the entire build, along with her plans as drawn by Peter Dunsford, of Gary Mull's Naval Architecture firm, to the new owner when I sold her on.
Incredible lofting and pattern work. Amazing what ONE man can do. Just a pleasure to watch. Having built lesser craft on my own, this was a treat to watch!
Outstanding Sir. I think the true mark of a master is in his mixture of craftsmanship and artistry. She is a thing of beauty! Truly appreciate you sharing this with us.
