- In an interview for the FRONTLINE documentary “Pelosi’s Power,” David Axelrod, who served as a campaign strategist and political adviser to President Barack Obama, discusses Nancy Pelosi’s early life and how it shaped her political career.
“She is completely formed by her experiences as the daughter of a ward boss and mayor of Baltimore,” he tells FRONTLINE. “She has the sensibilities of an old-time ward boss.”
Axelrod is the director of the Institute of Politics at the University of Chicago and a political commentator for CNN.
The following interview was conducted by FRONTLINE’s Michael Kirk on Nov. 4, 2021. It has been edited for clarity and length.

I doubt it will happen. The media and industrial complex destroyed the last populist president (Trump) and brought the other great populist to heel (Sanders). We will only see insiders from both parties for some time. Both candidates in 2024 will be hand picked. If Biden continues with such low approval I see him being forced out due to "declining health". If Biden goes the distance he will have spent nearly sixty years inside the political machine.

I don’t understand “soft money” nothing donated to politicians by billionaires/millionaires, corporations, lobbyists even unions {ideally unions have their membership’s (working & middle class voters) concerns at heart} hasn’t got strings attached. But dark money - no names just a committee to elect name - obscuring the Donation’s source. Knowing the source often allows us all to accurately deduce how the powerful want congress to vote or legislate. No one likes to be on the receiving end of ulterior motives, we want to clearly know who wants what. Mostly to conduct business or personal affairs - even the affairs of government - honestly. Also, there is way too much money spent on campaigns- those who donate the most money put the rest of us at a huge disadvantage. It’s like a guy with $1000.00 in poker chips playing a guy with $100,000.00 in chips & no betting limit. The rich guy just buys the hand, there’s no real skill or challenge to the game, not really gambling.
As I did not understand the term soft money I looked it up. I understand now that it’s money directed at a party not a specific politician’s campaign & it can come from a PAC so the donated funds are dark money in many cases - not linked to the actual donor’s name, which as stated in my first comment should be eliminated.
Pelosi needs to be fired and term limits need to be implemented in all public office. These “lifetime” politicians are unacceptable. We also need rules on insider trading for those on banking and security councils.

Term limits are complicated. But manditory retirement at 80 would be better. 10 terms for repersentives and 24 for senators would be about right. If you make it too short the permanent civil service would have the ability to shine on the congressmen

I think the suit sags a bit. Especially around the neck/chin/lower lip area because his species don't have chins. Most don't know it, but Sen. McConnell (R-KY) secretly disdains humans for having chins. If you shout to him, "Hey Sen. McConnell! What about these chins everywhere on the planet, amirite?" he'll either, a) pretend not to know what you're talking about, as he's a veteran at holding his disguise by now, or b) laugh because he knows exactly what you're talking about! He'll get the reference either way.
Maybe you should understand what type of political system we live under, before spewing out regurgitated diatribe that’s been spoonfed to you vis a vis the corporate media.
We live in a Republic, not a Democracy. There is a huge difference. Since I’m sure you’re not going to pick up any Plato or Aristotle anytime soon, let me try to help. The key reason we rely on a constitution republic or representative democracy is to avoid the tyranny or the masses. In a true democracy all the poor people could simply vote to take all the rich peoples money. Big problem.
Now mark me, I’m no fan of the Turtle man, but I put him on the same standing as Pelosi. They are both basically Neo-lib globalists that put corporate donor interest above their constituents. Garbage humans that both should be booted out.
Finally I’ll leave you with a fun fact, outside the purview of this little propaganda piece PBS put together. Outside of Schwartzenager, the state of California has been ruled over by the same 3 families that are all related. Brown, Newsom, and Pelosi… yes, they are the family that has single handedly overseen the utter destruction of the Golden State… my home.

Her time has passed and she should step down. Her skill set and public image have fossilized. The sensibilities of an old school ward boss don't cut it any more. Her style of politics has led to stagnation and infighting in the government. In times like these, no politician is worthy of praise, and no wealthy politician, regardless of the source, can make objective decisions for the other 99% - it's simply cognitively impossible, and at her age, cognition is a concern. The nation needs her to make room for more capable, modern thinking officials.

I just learned that a number of congressmen & women & members of the House of Representatives, in particular those in the armed forces committees, people privy to top secret information or any information, before the rest of us hear about the information or decisions this info leads them to make, have purchased stock in corporations that manufacture arms. These recent stock purchases were just days before voting as to whether & how much aid would be given to Ukraine. The delays in having NATO “close the sky” over Ukraine, as Zelensky is begging for, might not just be to prevent WW3. The no votes might be more related to money making. While in office, regardless of their committee assignments, they shouldn’t be allowed stock. Either be a business person or a politician. We want our leaders to have everyone’s best interest at heart not just their own greedy pockets to line.
This is why governors and federal politicians should be banned from buying/selling/owning stocks.
I agree that that elected officials should be restricted to mutual funds or blind trusts while in office.
Nancy and Paul Pelosi were wealthy long long before she ever ran for office. Because of their wealth, Nancy for years was a fundraiser among Democrats for the State and National Democratic Party and she was very good at it. Be very clear, unlike most Politicians who came to Congress and got wealthy, Not the Pelosis with their 6 children who lived in Pacific Heights in the big House they still live in today in SF.

Politicians should be mandated to live in shotgun homes, receive nothing but substance and covering, after they serve a four year term, the have a small pension to live off for 4 years as they transition back into society. They need to take money out of those wanting those positions as should church leaders, nothing about wealth and maga wealth should be a job description. Wealth and tricks should not be underlining benefits for those by way of a career. Get a real job in the private if those things don't sparkle a gold mine off the backs of tax payers.

Axelrod says Nancy is a master manipulator. I would agree there wholeheartedly. But that is not necessarily something to be proud of. One of my favorite quotes which I heard her say and still am in disbelief, *we will do what we have to win, whatever it takes. if it means we have to lie, then we will lie." Her words were to that effect, not verbatim.

I was here before cell phones, laptops, call waiting (which was not allowed in our house). The conclusions are from my observations and analysis and discussions. My parents taught us to observe, analyze, and question everything before making decisions so we would NOT be ignorant. We weren't raised/taught to behave like lemmings hurling over the cliff because another did. Nancy's Achilles Heel is her need to be the "One" who can make the miracle happen that no other woman can.

You would be astounded at the percentage of Americans who are now voting Democrat not because they approve of the party, but because the other option is just that embarrassing, and dangerous. I started this video by accident, thought I listen for a few minutes, then I heard 'she is a woman of great faith' and off I go. She showed the whole world where her faith is and it sure doesn't have anything to do with God. Her faith is definitely with the other team.
