I bought a 1979 Rickenbacker 4001 a few years back. The previous owner had it signed by the guys in DFA 1979! Was a super cool bonus! The signature has faded a bit but it’s still very visible!
I'm legitimately jealous - only chance I had to see them was in 2014 or so and Sebastian was so drunk I really thought he might fall off his drum stool. He struggled to keep a consistent beat all night and Jesse was visibly pissed. I collect live recordings and know how brilliant they can be onstage in better circumstances... hopefully they come back to my neck of the woods eventually!
God these first two albums are perfect, and the tone. 24 fret Keng Armstrong basses with humbuckers ran through two different frankenstein Peavey stacks, completely distinct. I think some of the cab speakers have been replaced with PA speakers.
I'm pretty sure this is similar to how Bob Mould got his massive guitar sound in Hüsker Dü, sending each pickup signal into separate stacks with a very slight delay added to one of them.
Woo Hoo! I requested this waaaay back! Glad to see it on the channel and glad you like it! The first album is a bit more lo-fi and punk and is great, but I feel that this album is much more full and melodically rich while maintaining the punch of the first one.
Dfa played a huge show with alexisonfire and then 2 weeks came back by themselves. They played in front of 6 people and invited me and one other person onto stage with them.
Check out their live House of Strombo set on RUclips. The quality of the filming/recording is top notch, and I think these guys sound WAY better live than on their records.
Man, the first DFA1979 album was a game-changer for me. It only took a few listens for me to realize that I had to learn how to play bass and write songs of my own. Almost 15 years later, I'm still at it.
One of the worst and most disappointing live bands I've ever seen, though! It was a year or so after The Physical World came out, and the drummer/singer was substantially more loaded than I was (which is saying something for the time) and I actually thought he might fall off his stool.
I'm not sure exactly how it works but he also uses a keyboard that goes through the same rig so sometimes he will switch over to that for the stuff that's harder to play on bass and itll sound the same. Idk if that happens on this song, but that's what I was thinking about when he did those weird slide parts. Also note that the drummer is the singer, lol. Great band!
I don't think he uses the keyboard for slides, it's the bass, the keyboard is mostly for complicated songs like that intro to the Physical World... He also uses it more on newer songs, but I don't really like it :X
When I saw them live circa 2014, Jesse only switched to the keyboard at a few specific moments - "Go Home Get Down", the latter half of "Going Steady", and "Physical World" are the ones I clearly recall. His keyboard tone is quite distinctive from that of his bass rig... so if it sounds like bass strings, it probably is.
i love this band so much and im glad my dad took me to see them this year, i recomend their first ep called 'Head's up' released in 2002, they also inspired royal blood with the album in this vidio 'the physical world'
You've gotta do White is Red by DFA. I heard that live when it debuted and it slaps. A bit slower and more melodic with a fun breakdown. Definitely my favorite from them.
These guys are absolutely incredible, but their first album is on an entirely different level. Highly recommended. As for a band with multiple bassists and no guitars, check out Megachurch. They only have a couple releases but they're entertaining as hell.
Love this band! He plays high up the neck a lot. Also, most of his dist/sound comes from his peavey amp. He doesn’t use a lot of pedals. I does use them. But not for his dirty sound really. If you life this, check out royal blood too.
Another bass/drums combo worth a video is Big Business playing Grounds for Divorce. Ex-Melvins rhythm section. Fuzzed up mental bass and intense drums.
You should check Shotmaker, they're also Canadian, and heavy on meaty bass riffs. And if you're into bass+drums bands, you should definitely check Lightning Bolt!
Hey dunno if it's mentioned in the vid and I just missed it - DFA tune a step down to DGCF - this song relies on a lot of open string stuff and harmonics so that's pretty crucial to the sound
Inbreds - Any Sense Of Time Another great Canadian duo that sounds nothing like this. Bass, drums and vocals, give em a chance I think you'll be impressed. Sweet epi btw
NVR 4EVR by DFA1979 has one of the most agressive, kick-you-in-the-face, ground-shaking bass/guitar tone and drum mix I've ever heard. Holy shit that track has WEIGHT to it.
damnit i thought this was a review of Thrice’s Death From Above about drine strikes. that album would be a good one to review! To Be Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere. one of their best imo.
@@M2Mil7er I wouldnt say it's imitation. a different take on the bass/drummer duo. death from above doesn't use as many octave switches as Royal Blood.
i saw this band in like 2002 and they blew me away, still have the original ep, at that time i had no expectations for opening acts and these guys could have stole the show if they werent opening for alexisonfire. Anyways most of the catalog is good, this is a nice jumping point, i think theres much cooler songs bass wise, well even song wise, crystal ball from this album is one id like to see mark do
Premier Guitar has a great rig rundown of Jesse Keeler's bass rig. He says he doesn't use any distortion pedals, just his amps' distortion. ruclips.net/video/AFIt0pNPjmY/видео.html
Great band, awesome break down. If you dig this try exit_international two bassists and a drummer, no lead guitar. Same noise punk vibe but a little bit more 'dirty' sounding.
No one will ever ask for this band. They do not have a bass player. Do 400 blows the root of our nature song and talk about how no bass player does or doesn't work.
Whirlwind Heat is another 2 instrument (bass and drums) band, and the lead singer occasionally plays a second bass. I'd say Purple is their best song and far "rougher" than DFA, not nearly as well produced
DFA is one band I think is WAY better live. I don't like the production on their records, but I've watched their live House of Strombo set like once a month for years now.
I can't even tell you how disappointing it was to catch them in 2014, after years of thinking they'd never reform, only to have it turn out to be the worst concert I've ever been to. When they were on, they were unstoppable - but man, watching a piss-drunk Sebby struggle to keep time and repeatedly insult his bandmate between songs was a profoundly lame experience.
"White is red" or "Always on" would have been the songs to take from this album if you want to have s better and more fun analysis. Old Frankenstein tho... Arguably a swing and a miss. Peace
Fun fact: I organized the very first Death From Above show in Mississauga, Ontario, well over two decades ago. Keeler (the bass player) is a fcking dooooooooooooouche. Total "rock star," if you know what I mean. And this was BEFORE he was famous!

"Romantic Rights" was DFA's first-ever single, and also worth checking out. Opens with one of the best pick-scraping riffs of all time.
There's a really good performance of Romantic Rights on Late Night with Conan O'Brien where Max Weinberg rushes in to take over on drums at one point.
I was going to suggest the same song. Their first full length has such a different feel to it.
Can happily listen to that album any time.

Canadian band Death from above 1979. They're on tour right now. Great live show!
Loudest show I've ever been to.
I absolutely love when people discover this band. They sound like noone else. I’ve been to 5 of their concerts and every show is great.
I'm legitimately jealous - only chance I had to see them was in 2014 or so and Sebastian was so drunk I really thought he might fall off his drum stool. Lightning Bolt!!!!!!
Seconded
i need to see him react to 13 Monsters
When I first heard Lighting Bolt, I thought I was having an aneurysm. It was cool..
Romantic Rights takes me back to good times in 2004. I loved the Human Giant sketch show, which had this song as the theme.
This band is everything Royal Blood wishes they could be.
Royal Blood are still a very good band
i find both of them to be pretty good, but i still prefer dfa

"Blood On Our Hands" is the most crucial DFA1979 track imo
The arrangement definitely made me view bass playing differently when I first hears it 10 years ago
Other good TWO bass player bands: Girls Against Boys from NYC and Dianogah from Chicago. If you’re interested going down this rabbit hole.
YES
Death from Above isn’t 2 bassists, just a 2 piece band…BUT I love Girls Against Boys and I like where you’re going with this….
DFA 1979 absolutely deserve full-on 'bass face'. One of my favorite bands to throw on and rock out to.
