I think when they added the competitive matchmaking queue in CSGO, that is when CS had its second wind of huge mainstream popularity. Prior to the matchmaking, it was a pain in the ass to get a true 5v5 competitive CS experience. Unfortunately the matchmaking also killed a lot of the unique community servers... I think there's a lot of people that don't even know there's a community server browser.
Minor detail about the beta, valve stepped in in beta 4.0 and started helping minh and jess, the last beta was 7.1 and the IP was bought by Valve when the game went retail 1.0 in 2000, all versions since (1.1-1.6) are all under Valve's development further patching up the game, 1.6 came out in 2003 and was the last major update to the original CS Also Arms Deal update was in 2013, not 2016, however skins YT boomed ~2015-2016
this video is on the algorithim. gj man, i didn't check the channel name at first and was expecting the channel to be >500k subs but here is a yt channel with 220 subs making content that is more polished than what some way bigger yters can make.

im 28 years old now, been playing cs since my older brother first brought it and i remember that there was not much to do just running around rather empty rooms and shooting glass, running on ladders, that was in 2002 when i was 7 year old learning how to operate pc, it was like 2nd game i ever played and im still playing it today lol :D
idk man i miss it too but i remember being a kid and joining random servers and getting so confused (but i grew up not speaking english so when i saw BOT in the latency I asked to join their clan)
css source zombies has to be my favourite gamemode, it's also my first introduction to css. Sadly there is only a couple of zombie servers left and there is very limited players left. Tbh they should make css even cheaper
As a boomer, I think I should add few things. So, CS 1.5 was already big with community growing through all 1.x versions exponentially. It also had significant competitive scene, although you would call almost all players that were playing competitively from that era amateurs by today's standards, but this is only because esport in general was small at that point (with maybe Quake being recognizable). Yet, with organisations like clanbase and tons of fragmovies it was sparking new casual players as well, some having their own HL copy and installing CS on it, some buying used HL copies from others, few (but I would guess very few) buying it through already existing Steam and, the last group, playing on illegal copies. So, when Valve announced that 1.6 will be only available via Steam it was a really big deal - suddenly everyone had to have their own unique product key, register it on Steam and download the game through shitty internet bandwidth. First, good luck if you had second-hand copy - your product key was probably already taken by one of former owners (yeah, game copies were circulating at the time), second: even though you could buy your copy on CD in regular store you had to register it on Steam anyway and foiling game copies was not that common at the time, so your product key could have been already stolen by some kid writing it down at the store before you even bought your copy. Oh, and one more thing: remember when I mentioned shitty bandwidth? Well, that's not the only issue with Steam at that time: this application was very immature and infrastructure was simply not ready to handle all thirsty teenagers wanting to play some CS - it was constantly crashing, it was corrupting game files forcing you to redownload whole game again and again (remember: the bandwidth) with VAC accidentally kicking you out of server from time to time just because it lost connection or something. Simply: it was total chaos. But why am I even saying all this? Because I truly believe that this Valve politics to make 1.6 available only through Steam combined with popularity of the game was THE reason that Steam become so popular and it was something that changed games industry forever. And yes, I agree HL2 with about million and a half GOTY awards made it grow even more, but I still think it wouldn't be so simple if Valve haven't forced CS players to use Steam in the past - it's totally different to sell something completely new compared to moving already addicted players to a new platform. And in before someone says "dude, there was non-steam version, if a Steam was a problem or you had no internet connection you could use that" - well, yes and no. When it's true that pirates eventually found their way to crack CS 1.6 and it was great for playing with friends on LAN it was impossible to play it competitively (obviously) and the server browser was useless because you couldn't play on official servers with it (obviously). Although, I admit, non-steam version was very popular, but I think big part of it was simply frustrations from using early Steam and internet access not so common as today. Fun fact: what some people believe is the CS 1.6 menu music is in actually music added by crackers - original version doesn't have any menu music - that only shows how popular illegal copies were at the time. Anyway, this is all ancient history today and CS is now so big it's not even comparable to those times, but I thought putting some context was in order. And, don't get me wrong, I still think CS:GO is the best version of all - Valve did great job listening to players and improving the gameplay (only parts I'm not fan of are match making and weapon cases). Well, that's all I wanted to say, if anyone is still reading this shit: I wish you a great day!
bro thank you for leaving such a nice comment of your boomer account, I wasn't old enough back then but I remember my cousin's all playing a cracked version (I grew up playing lan cafes where the whole room was on the same server together but now thinking about it those copies would also all be cracked LMAO) to me tho it's css > cs1.6 > csgo in regards to how big the game felt at the time
@@roymondce there was some kind of partner program where you could have Steam available on all of computers in you internet cafe, but I don't know details - few had it, mostly it was "use your own account" or there was non-steam installed by another user. That's considering you were playing a Steam game, like 1.6 or CS:S, having HL+1.5 I think you were able to play from multiple computers on LAN with same CD-key, and although it was breaking the licence the owner at least had one legal copy 😅 I was mostly competitive oriented so I stayed with 1.6 even when CS:S came out, I switched only to CS:GO, but I know that casual playing and mods were a big thing for some people and CS:GO just killed it - 1.6 and CS:S were flooding in mods, so I think I know what you mean by saying that game felt big - today's one-time teammates culture is cutting out all this feeling of being part of the community. That's why I'm not a big fan of solo queue matchmaking - you want to play competitively? Just create a lobby and find 4 other people who wants to play few matches with you as a team - creating a "team" of random folks just for one match is only leading to frustration and anger.
I never played 1.6 in its prime, but i did play a lot of CZ, and onto Source. CSS has been such a huge part of my gaming life and i made so many friends along the way. Spent the majority of school holidays on the eGO jailbreak server. I met one of the friends about 15 years ago on there, we've never met IRL but I still consider him one of my best friends. We started teams and played in IRC. CSS taught me teamwork, cooperation and leadership skills that school could never teach. I went from a shy kid scared of group activities to a leader of 4 people having to make split decisions, track economies, memorise enemy movements and analyse the game as we played. CSGO came and killed CS for me for many years. I still play CSGO but it's not the same. Source may get a lot of shit, but it will *forever* be the shared GOAT for me along with DOOM. Source will have a place in my heart forever.
I used to hate this game but only becuase of no aim down sights ,then noticed that csgo has proper aim down sights on aug and sg553 (unlike old CS lol) and started to like it more))
