  • At least that was the case ten years ago, when like every other Metallica Orion cover had the bass riff played on guitar. Metallica tab books are partially to blame for that. And that infuriated me, as a bassist and Cliff Burton fan.

It upset me since it felt like it was discrediting Cliff… same with the For Whom The Bell Tolls intro

I get what you're saying, but I wouldn't go as far as infuriated. Maybe the guy just found that the riff was fun to play and did not have a bass. I'm guilty of that 😅

Obviously wasn't James playing it. Too much alternate picking for his play style. Also, yes, I do realize that was actually a bass playing that on the album.

There really is very little difference between """official""" tab books and user-made tabs when it comes to quality, except they might be wrong in different ways. Absolutely use tabs to get a leg up when you want to learn something fast, but always have your ear open and be skeptical

and always watch the live versions I would say, the musicians themselves were the best teachers I ever had

@@AmiltonJr99 Oh yeah absolutely! And sometimes even having figured out what notes to play, it's cool to see how they do it cause it can turn out to be more ergonomic or transition smoother into the next part

user made tabs tend to be far more accurate since they're peer curated

Thanks to stranger things, Master of Puppets is gonna turn into the new Forbidden Riff with how bad guitar "players" are butchering it on TikTok and shit

yeah, kinda hate it. I mean yeah nice that it gains on polularity in my generation, but i dont need a cancel culture to see it + people who wanna be cool and play it after 2 weeks of guitar. I have been playing with passion for 1 1/2 years (before that 4 years accoustic without passion) and i wanted to learn master of puppets. Then stranger things came out and everybody wanted it
      ffs
but anyways i learned how to play it...and the full song...not just 13 notes

@@triad5766 Yeah maybe he didn't directly inspire prog metal bands... And the guy who said that, expressed his own personal opinion... But who's to say he couldn't have written progressive stuff at some point? He was known for disliking oversimplified music. He loved classical music, which is a huge inspiration for prog bands. Long compositions, harmonic devices, clever use of intervals, just to name a few traits of Cliff's style that are common also in classical and prog. Just because the guy didn't play in 7/8 didn't mean he couldn't have influenced prog.

Back when I couldn't play the guitar part properly I used to play this on guitar instead....I mean, the power chord version of this. I didn't care it was the wrong part, for some reason I found it to flow better than the riff James plays.
