- Today’s video is of Vintage Trains’ “The Polar Express”, an annual regular train in November and December which runs out of Birmingham Moor Street to Dorridge or Whitlocks End top and tailed by Tyseley's GWR Castle Class 4-6-0 7029 “Clun Castle” and a diesel. The steam is always facing the Birmingham end. I'm down from my new home in the North to visit family and my 'secondary planner' so I also gave it the opportunity to see the Polars. I'll be covering this more on subsequent weekends so look out for all those!
I started out from my local and headed to Small Heath first where I met @JakeBSteam, @blackcountrysteamvideos8021 and @LiamsLocos. I first got the ECS with them at Small Heath South Junction, followed by a short walk to Tyseley. I opted for the bridge which was a mistake as she was signal checked by a preceding unit - the signal only turned once she was in the station. I then headed down to Solihull Meadow near Dorridge for the next run - with conditions there remarkably different, looking like something of a winter wonderland. A very brisk walk to Dorridge ensued, with us taking a train to Small Heath and changing to head down the North Warwickshire Line to Shirley. We were lucky not to be blocked by a Stratford bound unit. After this we visited the Chippy before heading to Hall Green. I was a little worried about 7029 after this as it appeared 7029 was doing no work and Martin (her driver) was on the phone but after a walk from Hall Green (where I left Luke and Liam) to Solihull I was not disappointed by her excellent performance. I then headed home.
I hope you all enjoyed as i did, today was quite a struggle with the weather conditions (which played havoc on my tech lol) and the copious cancellations but all went rather well in the end! Thank you to my company for the day as well as Vintage Trains, Chiltern, WMR and NR. I hope you enjoy as I did!!
Fantastic Shots you made.
Thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoyed them. Regards, Dan
The clip from the thumbnail is magical, thanks for the upload.
Thank you very much, I thought much the same there in person, even if it was bloody freezing lol! I'm very glad you enjoyed. Regards, Dan
Very enjoyable, many thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it, my pleasure! Thank you for your comment. Regards, Dan
Very good footage of clun castle 7029 thanks Tony Simpson .
Glad you enjoyed it, many thanks! Regards, Dan
Brilliant - some great shots especially the wintwer scene. I live in LMS region so it is always a delight to see 'exotic' Western region trains. Lovely Christmas morning treat - many thanks.
Thank you very much!! The winter scene was pure luck, the clouds didn't lift for the entire day whereas they did only a mile or so north. And I'm glad to have showcased some exotic steam for you!! Regards, Dan
Fantastic video! I'm such a big fan of 7029, and I've got to say, she looks beautiful in that wintery setting! Keep up the good work!
Thank you very much! I've always loved Castles and the wintry setting really was perfect. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Regards, Dan
Dan, Nicely captured. Regards, John
Thank you very much John! I'm glad you think so. Regards, Dan
Great video as always Dan, was great to catch up again. Kind regards, Jake.
Glad you enjoyed it mate and good to see you as always. We hadn't caught up in a while. Regards, Dan
Great video Dan, well done :)
Thank you! 👍 I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Regards, Dan
Classic steam and a wintry landscape. Wonderful👌🙂
Thank you very much! The wintry scene worked out really well. Regards, Dan
Great video cornflake!
Thanks lol! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Regards, Dan
Nice one!
Thank you mate! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Regards, Dan
What a fantastic start to a kiddies Christmas, I hope they all enjoyed it and a better scene could not have been wished for with all the snow on the bushes and trees. Happy Christmas to all the organizers
Haha absolutely, as a child I'd have loved it! Vintage Trains hit the jackpot with it I reckon. Regards, Dan
What a shot at Solihull mate. Wish I’d have stayed for that now
Thank you mate! Tbf man it was a bloody long walk tho and you'd have had difficulty getting home I reckon. Great to meet up again today man. Regards, Dan
Superb show, thank you. It’s amazing how much the big lamp alters her side profile - in the Solihull Meadow shots she looks almost continental!
Thank you very much! Yes the lamp is rather large when you see it in person - surprisingly effective given the intention behind it! Regards, Dan
Great video Dan good you managed to see the Polar Express again this year.Take care.
Thank you Richard, it was really nice to see! Am hoping to get some footage of 5043 soon. Regards, Dan
A great compilation of shots there and an enjoyable watch Dan. Nice to catch up on Sunday too mate. Best Wishes, Brian.
Thanks Brian 👍! I'm really glad you enjoyed them and great to meet you again as well, thank you for the lift too lol. Regards, Dan
@@crunchynutsteamfilms5043 No problem Dan, take care mate👍
I caught the polar express myself on Sunday 26th November and I went for dorridge to see it pull into the loop and then widney manor to see it on the way back
That's great Scott, I hope that was good. Regards, Dan
@@crunchynutsteamfilms5043yes it was and Whitlock’s end is another new destination for the polar express
Thanks for showing, spectacular hoar frost at Solihull meadow, nice touch having that family in shot, helped give it some depth and perspective. Got to see "Clun" at York last Tuesday, the station where I first "copped" her in September 1967.
Thank you very much, we had a great show at Solihull Meadow and I fully agree! I'm glad you got to see her, I was somewhat hoping to as well but was busy. Regards, Dan
Fantastic stuff Dan! Was great catching up.
Should of done solihull with you shouldn’t we🤦🏼♂️
Liam
Haha absolutely mate, was a long walk but worth it lol. Mate was great to see you again as well, next time don't leave your tripod on benches lmao. Regards, Dan
Excellent Well Done
Many thanks! I'm glad you should think so. Regards, Dan
This is the second time this year that this loco is been used on a polar express tour as it had last year
That's it mate. Heard rumours about 5043 but don't know much yet. Regards, Dan
@@crunchynutsteamfilms5043yeah they didn’t choose her for the polar express tour as we were hoping for
Of course, what it really needs is Old Snow Hill to give it a fitting place to finish.
Absolutely, what a shame Beeching got rid of it! I've always found it mind boggling it was closed in 72 just to be reopened in 84 lol. Regards, Dan
A wonderful video Dan, I admire the great variety of shots and locations on display here. The frosty conditions definitely enhanced the atmosphere that day as far as filming as concerned! I liked the first shot taken from the canal bridge, though I have to wonder how one gets up there lol. The evening shots are quite special too, the latter shot from Solihull especially. To mention has to go to that sequence from Solihull Meadows too, the wintry atmosphere in that shot is absolutely phenomenal; now there's a scene that wouldn't look out of place in a live-action "Polar Express" remake! I was just slightly further along at Widney Manor for that run, and we had plenty of frost there too, but not quite to the degree that you had there! You're welcome to judge my efforts for yourself should you wish. Well done on this fine piece of work, I've liked and subscribed!
Kind regards,
Adam T 🙂
Great to see your new channel is up and running already Adam! Thank you very much for your kind words about my video, I certainly am pleased with the Solihull Meadow one. I have seen your video and was definitely impressed. All the best with your new channel mate! I shall return the favour. Many thanks as always. Regards, Dan
Thank you Dan, I was a bit wary of starting afresh but thought it wise considering the recent troubles faced with my main channel. Besides, I'd say the name '85A Steam Videos' gives a better representation of what videos I produce, also noting that I've done that so that, in theory, I may include any form of steam traction i.e. traction engines, paddle steamers, etc, though railways will obviously be the predominant feature. I greatly appreciate your support of this endeavour, thank you most kindly for that. Starting a clean slate obviously means having to build the channel's profile from scratch, so I'm grateful for any support received. I've a variety of plans in store going forward, so plenty to look forward to in my book!
Kind regards,
Adam T.
Music to my ears. Ever thought of swapping main line steam for a Santa Special ride on a preserved railway? There are no cancellations to deal with on that side. Bet you wouldn't say no to free mince pie, onboard a Santa Special train, hauled by a steamy.
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I do travel behind steam fairly often but I rarely post the results here. Regards, Dan
Great video. Like me .
Thanks 👍! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Regards, Dan
Why do these steam trains have a diesel loco at rear ?
It would spoil the effect if they put it on the front. ;)
Haha, yes indeed it would spoil the effect on the front lol. There are many reasons for them, sometimes to provide heating for coaches, sometimes as insurance for locomotive failures or steep gradients, sometimes to assist with turning moves at their destination and sometimes in case of hot weather and fire risk. In the case of the polar express is actually none of these, the diesel drags the train from Birmingham out to Dorridge and the steam works the return, allowing the steam not to have to run round its train. Personally I'd love to see more tours without diesels but unfortunately this isn't something I'm in charge of lol. Regards, Dan
Thanks Dan .👍
Steam trains at night with screeching hooters and smoke. Lovely but eerie....
Haha definitely! I must say steam at night is very under rated. The firebox glow and lingering steam makes for excellent shots. Regards, Dan
